First identify where the picture disappears: in the OBS preview, in an OBS recording, or only on YouTube. Those point to different problems. If the black screen is in OBS, start with the lesson’s source type, selected file, and playback and visibility settings. If OBS looks correct but YouTube does not, check stream output and connection separately; a dropped-frame problem is not the same as a local media source failing to render.
First, locate where the screen goes black
- Black in OBS preview: Begin with the scene’s media source and its playback or visibility settings.
- Black in an OBS recording: Check the source in the scene and compare the preview with the recorded result.
- Black only on YouTube, or interrupted there: Investigate streaming output and the connection. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the selected bitrate; that does not establish why a local source preview is black. See the OBS Help Portal.
- Black after changing scenes or hiding and showing the source: Inspect settings that control what happens when a source becomes inactive and visible again.
There is no single setting that fixes every case. The operating system, OBS version, source type, media format, and exact point when the picture disappears all matter.

Check a built-in Media Source
In the scene containing the lesson, select the source and open its properties. Confirm that it is an OBS Media Source and that the intended local file is selected. OBS’s Media Source supports specified local video and audio formats, and its Loop option restarts the file when playback completes. The relevant controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide (page dated January 11, 2022).
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Check Loop and restart behavior
- Loop: Enable this if the lesson should start over when it reaches the end.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: Inspect this if the file should start from its beginning each time the source becomes visible in the current scene. It governs reactivation, not just what happens when the file reaches its end.
Test the source in OBS after changing one setting at a time. This helps distinguish an end-of-file looping issue from a problem that occurs when the source is shown again.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Check what happens while the source is hidden
Close file when inactive unloads the media file when the source is hidden or not on the current scene. OBS notes that loading it again can cause a short delay before it displays. If the black screen follows a scene change, compare behavior with this option disabled. Treat that as a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix: the documentation describes the setting and its reload delay, but does not identify it as a universal cause of black screens.
If the lesson is a VLC Video playlist
VLC Video is a separate source type for playlists and extended media support. It relies on VLC, so verify that VLC is installed. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS. In the source properties, check Loop Playlist and the visibility and restart behavior against what you want when changing scenes: restart from the beginning, or continue playing while the source is inactive. The available behavior depends on the source and its settings; do not assume the built-in Media Source controls apply identically.

Choose the source that fits the lesson
| Need | Built-in Media Source | VLC Video |
|---|---|---|
| One local lesson file | Designed to play a selected local media file. | Can be used, but its playlist-oriented capabilities may be unnecessary for one file. |
| Playlist playback | Use a Media Source for a single file; the cited guide describes VLC Video as the OBS source for playlists. | Supports playlist behavior, including a Loop Playlist option. |
| Media support | Accepts the specified video and audio formats listed in the OBS guide. | Uses VLC libraries and offers extended media support. |
| Additional installation | No VLC requirement is stated for this built-in source. | Requires VLC; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
For either source, confirm that the selected file is the intended lesson and test the behavior both at the loop point and after hiding and restoring the source.

If OBS is correct but YouTube is black or interrupted
Do not treat a working OBS preview and a failed YouTube picture as the same fault. Check OBS’s streaming status and output, then look for dropped frames. The OBS Help Portal explains that dropped frames can point to an unstable connection or a connection unable to sustain the chosen bitrate. That evidence concerns the connection to the streaming service; it does not explain a black local preview. If the preview and recording are sound but only the destination fails, keep the investigation on stream output and connection rather than repeatedly changing the media file.

Historical report: useful context, not a current diagnosis
An OBS Studio user report opened July 19, 2020 described OBS 25.0.8 media sources that had not yet been activated failing to display after extended inactivity when Loop, Restart playback when source becomes active, and Close file when inactive were enabled. The reporter said browsing to and reloading the same file restored it. That is a report from one historical setup, not confirmation of a current OBS defect or a reliable fix for today’s releases. The estimated time before the behavior appeared was that user’s observation, not a general threshold. Read the OBS Studio issue #3192 with those limits in mind.

| Symptom | What to check next |
|---|---|
| The picture is black in the OBS preview | Confirm the source type and selected local file; inspect Loop and restart behavior for the source in that scene. |
| The source goes black after a scene change | Inspect Close file when inactive and restart behavior. Compare with the close-file option disabled, accounting for a possible reload delay. |
| A VLC playlist does not behave as expected | Verify VLC is installed, match its architecture to OBS, and inspect Loop Playlist and visibility behavior. |
| OBS looks right, but the YouTube stream drops frames or appears interrupted | Investigate streaming output and whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate; do not confuse this with local source rendering. |
| The checks do not identify the fault | Gather the OBS version, operating system, source type, media file format, relevant source settings, and an OBS log before seeking support. |
