Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor YouTube Live in OBS, select CBR and set the video bitrate target to YouTube’s recommendation for your stream’s ingest codec, resolution and frame rate. For OBS’s documented NVENC controls, the maximum-bitrate field is ignored in CBR mode; it is not a second active ceiling. Choose settings your upload connection can sustain, then test them before the broadcast.
What to set in OBS
- In OBS, open Settings > Output and locate the streaming encoder’s rate-control and bitrate controls. The precise fields can vary by encoder and OBS version.
- Set rate control to CBR.
- Set the video bitrate target using the row in YouTube’s live-ingest table that matches your codec, output resolution and frame rate.
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Check that your total outgoing bitrate, including audio, fits within sustainable upload capacity, leaving headroom for network variation.
These are YouTube’s live-stream ingest recommendations, not its separate recommendations for uploading finished videos. YouTube says it detects encoder settings by default and transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations

YouTube’s same table gives minimums as well as recommendations. For example, at 1080p60, the minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 6 Mbps for H.264; the recommended rates are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps respectively. At 1080p30, the minimum is 4 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 5 Mbps for H.264; the recommendations are 10 Mbps and 14 Mbps. Treat the recommended value as the target when your connection and encoder can sustain it. If they cannot, reduce the output resolution or frame rate, or choose a lower bitrate that remains stable.

Resolution and frame rate affect more than bitrate: OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can demand more system resources than 30 fps. Set an output your system can encode reliably before choosing its corresponding bitrate. OBS Studio overview
CBR target versus maximum bitrate
CBR target
With constant bitrate selected, the bitrate field is the target rate around which the encoder sends the stream. Use the YouTube recommendation for the stream’s actual ingest settings, provided your upload connection can sustain it.

Maximum bitrate in OBS NVENC
OBS’s NVENC documentation says maxBitRate is used for VBR and ignored for CBR. In that documented NVENC case, setting a maximum does not impose another active cap on a CBR stream; the CBR target is the relevant rate-control value. The documentation applies to NVENC options introduced starting with OBS 31.0 and does not establish that every encoder exposes or handles a maximum field the same way. Make sure your upload connection can carry the stream
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% of your upload capacity unused. The total outgoing bitrate must stay within available upload bandwidth, and a headline internet-plan speed alone does not show whether the connection can sustain a live stream consistently. YouTube streaming tips

- Use stable upload-speed results as a guide, rather than relying on download speed.
- Allow capacity for audio and ordinary variation in the connection, not just the video target.
- If the recommended target does not leave sufficient headroom, reduce resolution or frame rate and use the corresponding YouTube table row.
Test before going live and monitor stream health
Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast, then review stream health and any messages during the event. YouTube’s testing guidance says tests should include “audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” YouTube live encoder settings
If OBS shows dropped frames, its connection troubleshooting guide says the connection may be unstable or unable to maintain the configured bitrate. Lower the video bitrate and test again. The guide suggests 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for troubleshooting; that is guidance for diagnosis, not a universal setting or guarantee. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting

Common problems and fixes
The maximum field is visible even though CBR is selected
For the NVENC option documented by OBS, this is not evidence of a second active cap: the maximum bitrate parameter is ignored in CBR mode. Check your selected encoder’s documentation before applying that behavior to a different encoder.
OBS reports dropped frames or the stream disconnects
Reduce the video bitrate, then test again. If the problem persists, choose a lower resolution or frame rate and its matching bitrate recommendation; also check whether the connection is stable enough for live output.

The stream is stable but the chosen settings strain the computer
Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps or reduce resolution. OBS notes that 60-fps streaming can tax system resources more heavily than 30 fps; select the corresponding row in YouTube’s table after changing output settings.
