Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A normal OBS scene or source change should not require restarting your YouTube Live stream: it changes the picture OBS is composing, not the streaming destination. If YouTube stays live but the image goes black or stalls, troubleshoot the source; if OBS disconnects or reports dropped frames, check encoding performance and the network separately. Neither a seamless picture nor an uninterrupted connection is guaranteed on every setup, so rehearse the actual transitions before going live.
Keep the stream active while switching scenes
In OBS, scenes and sources define the program image; stream controls start and stop the output. Select the next scene from the Scenes list or use a hotkey assigned to that scene. Do not use a stream stop/start hotkey as part of a scene transition. OBS documents scene switching and stream controls separately, and its overview does not say an ordinary scene switch requires a new YouTube connection. OBS Studio Overview Guide

- Keep one active OBS stream output pointed at the scheduled YouTube broadcast.
- Build the expected source states into scenes ahead of time, then preview each transition.
- Prepare a fallback scene with a stable camera, slate, or holding graphic in case an input fails. This is an operational precaution, not a guarantee from OBS.
- Test with the same sources and output settings you plan to use live. A scene switch can still expose source reload delays, resource limits, plugin faults, or network problems.
Separate a picture problem from a connection problem
A stream can remain connected while the displayed image is black or delayed. First check whether YouTube still shows the broadcast as live and whether OBS is still streaming. Then follow the relevant branch:
| What you see | Likely category | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube remains live, but the picture is black or delayed after switching back | Source visibility, initialization, or media reload | Check visibility and media-source settings; preview the scene. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding lag near the transition | GPU, compositing, or encoder capacity | Simplify the scene and expensive sources; reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. |
| OBS dropped-frame count rises or the stream disconnects | Network path, bitrate, or ingest server | Check sustained upload, lower bitrate to a sustainable level, and try another ingest server. |
| The stream stays connected and the image changes as expected | Normal transition | No restart is needed; continue monitoring. |
OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate; it says this is very unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. That is different from frames missed because OBS cannot render or encode the output. OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting · OBS Encoding Performance Troubleshooting

Check media sources that disappear when hidden
For an OBS Media Source that must reappear immediately, inspect its “Close file when inactive” option. When enabled, OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive; its documentation warns that the source may take a short time to show again while it reloads. Leave the option disabled if immediate return matters, or keep it enabled only after testing and accepting the delay. OBS Media Sources
For other inputs, verify the source is visible in the intended scene and that the input itself is still available. If the scene preview is already blank, the problem is upstream of YouTube delivery.

Set up YouTube’s 2160p60 encoder output
YouTube’s published encoder settings support up to 60 fps and list RTMP/RTMPS transport, with RTMPS recommended for encrypted transport. Supported video codecs listed are H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its bitrate guidance for 2160p at 60 fps varies by codec:
| Codec | YouTube’s 2160p60 bitrate guidance |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 35 Mbps recommended |
| AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps minimum; 40 Mbps maximum |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a universal bitrate or a promise of visual quality. Choose settings your encoder and sustained upload can handle. YouTube recommends Rec. 709 for SDR and H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S); its guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full details.

OBS notes that YouTube transcodes streams and that a consistent keyframe interval helps viewers move among quality options. Keep the interval stable and within YouTube’s recommendation. OBS Transcodes / Transcoding
Rehearse the full 4K60 transition path
- Configure the planned output. Set OBS to 3840×2160 at 60 fps, select the intended encoder and codec, and use YouTube’s codec-specific bitrate guidance, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval.
- Prepare the broadcast and scenes. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube broadcast, load the scenes and sources you will use, and assign scene-switch hotkeys only if they cannot be confused with stream controls.
- Run an unlisted or private rehearsal. Use the real sources, overlays, transitions, output settings, and upload path. Watch OBS rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames, as well as YouTube’s incoming-stream status.
- Exercise source return behavior. Hide and restore media sources and other likely inputs; preview every scene and confirm the intended image returns. Record locally if feasible so a platform interruption does not erase the program.
- Adjust based on the symptom. If rendering or encoding lag rises around a transition, reduce the load or lower output settings. If dropped frames rise while the picture is otherwise fine, test upload stability and another ingest server.
Reduce load or network strain if the rehearsal falters
Rendering or encoding lag
4K60 can be demanding, and OBS notes that every source can add resource cost, including sources that are not visible. Simplify overlays, browser sources, high-resolution capture inputs, and animations. If the machine still cannot keep up, reduce output resolution or frame rate, for example to 30 fps. OBS’s encoding performance guidance covers further checks.

Dropped frames or disconnects
Confirm the connection can sustain the selected bitrate during the broadcast, not merely on a nominal internet-plan speed. OBS suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, but actual stable capacity under load is what matters. Try a nearer or different ingest server and lower bitrate until the connection is stable. See OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps.

If the changing source is an external HDMI camera or console, OBS can use a capture card as a video-capture source; a USB webcam is another input category. Check the device manufacturer’s current specifications for supported capture resolution and frame rate, host interface, driver compatibility, and latency before buying. The OBS sources guide identifies capture cards as a source category but does not certify specific models for 4K60. A capture card supplies an input; it does not keep YouTube connected or fix encoder or network instability. OBS Sources Guide
Likewise, adding a second computer or changing capture hardware alone does not establish that an ingest disconnection will be prevented. For any 4K60 encoding setup, verify that the machine supports the chosen codec and can sustain encoding at the intended output.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps looping uploaded videos rather than a live camera or changing OBS inputs, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at the quality it was made, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
