For a text-heavy YouTube Live stream, choose bitrate from YouTube’s live-ingestion table for your resolution, frame rate and video codec—not from its upload-video settings. As a practical starting point, use 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 at 14 Mbps if your connection can sustain it; for 720p30 H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps. YouTube does not publish a separate bitrate table for slides or educational playlists, so test your actual content and encoder before going live.
Recommended starting settings for slides and lessons
For mostly static slides, screen captures and spoken instruction, 30 fps is a reasonable starting point to test if the material does not need smoother motion. This is practical guidance, not a YouTube rule for educational content. At 1080p30, H.264 has a lower listed recommendation than at 1080p60: 14 Mbps rather than 17 Mbps. Choose resolution based on whether your text is readable for viewers; YouTube does not specify a readability threshold for slides.

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates, in Mbps. They are not bitrate results from a study of educational slides. Use the row that matches your stream’s codec, resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s live encoder guidance also provides minimum settings; a minimum is not the target when you are aiming for the recommended quality.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1 / H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
At the same resolution and frame rate, YouTube’s listed AV1/H.265 recommendations are lower than the H.264 recommendations. That is useful only if your encoder and streaming workflow support the selected codec. Do not select a codec based on bitrate alone.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video codecs. For a compatible encoder, use these platform settings as the baseline:
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps, using the rate selected for the stream.
- Ingest protocol: use RTMPS when available. YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP.
- Bitrate: use the recommended value in the table for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate you configure.
These are ingestion settings. Your encoder’s menu labels may differ, so verify what it is actually sending rather than assuming a preset name matches YouTube’s table.

Test the actual slides, audio and connection
- Choose the output first. Decide whether 720p or 1080p makes your smallest essential text legible, and whether the content needs 30 or 60 fps. Select a codec the encoder supports.
- Check upload performance. Run a speed test and compare the measured connection with the bitrate you intend to send. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate but does not prescribe a universal headroom percentage.
- Run a representative stream test. Include the real slides, transitions, cursor movement and audio. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream; a static test screen alone may not expose the same problems.
- Watch stream health and messages. Check the live control room or encoder status during the test and again during the event. If indicators show instability, lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate, then test again.
There is no established percentage by which text-heavy material can safely reduce bitrate. A mostly static screen may behave differently from a video with frequent movement, but the official guidance does not quantify that difference. Use a representative test rather than assuming slides require less data.

YouTube’s separate upload encoding guidance recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate uploaded videos. That is not the live-ingestion recommendation: for 1080p30 H.264 live streaming, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. Upload encoding and live ingestion are different workflows; use the live table for an encoder sending a stream.

Choose latency for the lesson format
Latency is the delay between capture and viewers seeing the stream. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, and that it matters less when the creator does not interact with the audience. If learners will ask questions and expect near-real-time replies, latency is worth considering; for a one-way lecture or playlist, normal latency may be adequate. The platform’s live stream settings guidance describes the tradeoff but does not prescribe a latency mode for educational playlists.
Troubleshoot bitrate and playback problems
- Stream health reports an unstable connection: confirm the encoder is using CBR and the intended bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain it in a representative test, reduce bitrate, resolution or frame rate and test again.
- Text looks too soft or difficult to read: check that the stream is actually being sent at the chosen resolution, and consider testing 1080p rather than 720p if the connection and encoder can sustain its recommended bitrate. YouTube does not publish a slide-specific legibility threshold.
- Encoder and YouTube show different settings: verify the output codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder itself, then match them to the corresponding live-ingestion row. A label such as “high quality” does not identify those values.
- Viewers report buffering: review stream health and connection stability, and test a lower output setting. If you selected a lower-latency mode for audience interaction, consider whether the additional buffering risk is acceptable for this lesson.
- Bitrate was set from an upload guide: replace that figure with the live-ingestion recommendation for the active codec and output settings; upload-video recommendations do not define live encoder bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If this playlist needs to keep a YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud rather than relying on a computer or home connection staying on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
