For a 720p, 30 fps YouTube Live stream, set H.264 to 8 Mbps or AV1/H.265 to 6 Mbps. YouTube lists lower minimums of 3 Mbps for H.264 and 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265. These figures are the bitrate sent to YouTube, not a guaranteed playback bitrate for viewers: YouTube transcodes live streams. The fact that the source video is prerecorded does not change the recommended setting; match the encoder settings to the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and codec.
Recommended bitrate and encoder settings
YouTube’s English live encoder guidance lists these settings for 720p at 30 fps. The page does not display a publication date, so check YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance before a future broadcast in case its recommendations change.

Use the recommended bitrate when your encoder supports the codec and your connection can sustain it. A listed minimum is not an assurance of consistent quality or stability; test the actual setup before relying on it.

Does prerecorded video need a different bitrate?
No. “Pre-recorded” describes the source, not a separate YouTube Live bitrate category. Choose the row that matches what your encoder sends: resolution, frame rate, and codec. If the encoder outputs 720p at 30 fps in H.264, use the H.264 figures; if it outputs AV1 or H.265/HEVC, use that codec’s figures. A prerecorded file’s own export bitrate does not replace the live encoder’s ingest bitrate setting.

Set up and test the stream
- Match output format: In your encoder, set output resolution to 720p and frame rate to 30 fps. Ensure the selected codec is supported by both the encoder and the YouTube stream configuration.
- Set bitrate by codec: Choose 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 as the recommended target. YouTube’s listed minimums are 3 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively.
- Set rate control and keyframes: Use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Do not set the interval above 4 seconds.
- Choose an ingest protocol: Use RTMPS where available; it is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP.
- Check upload capacity: Measure upload speed, not download speed. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend leaving 20% headroom and say the total stream bitrate must fit within available outbound capacity. If sending primary and backup streams, allow for both streams plus that margin.
- Run a representative test: Test before the broadcast with similar audio and motion to the prerecorded video, then monitor stream health and encoder messages while live. YouTube’s advice is to test before starting and watch for stream warnings.
Live Control Room can automatically detect encoder settings. Manual resolution selection is associated with using a custom stream key and enabling manual settings. If you select that route, confirm the stream key and chosen manual format agree with the encoder output.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- Unstable stream or connection warnings: The outgoing stream may exceed available upload capacity, especially if other devices or applications are using the connection. Check upload speed, reduce competing traffic, and leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Include both primary and backup stream bitrates in the calculation if applicable.
- Encoder and stream settings do not match: Confirm that the output resolution, frame rate, codec, and configured YouTube stream settings agree. If you manually select resolution in Live Control Room, make sure the custom stream key and manual settings are in use as required.
- Keyframe-related warning: Set the interval to 2 seconds and keep it no longer than 4 seconds.
- Image quality suffers at a lower bitrate: If using a listed minimum rather than the recommendation, compare results in a representative test. Choose the recommended codec-specific bitrate if the connection can reliably support it with headroom.
- Viewers report a different bitrate or quality: The ingest bitrate is what the encoder sends to YouTube; it is not a promise of the bitrate each viewer receives because YouTube transcodes live streams.
