Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a 4K (2160p) YouTube Live stream at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 42 Mbps for H.264 or 30 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Those are recommended video bitrates; YouTube’s listed minimums are 11 Mbps and 8 Mbps, respectively. Looping footage does not have a separate bitrate setting in YouTube’s guidance. Use the recommendation for your encoder’s codec, then provide stable upload capacity for the stream’s total bitrate plus about 20% headroom.
Recommended 4K 30fps bitrates by codec
| Video codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| AV1 | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
| H.265 / HEVC | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published ingestion figures for 4K/2160p at 30 fps. The official bitrate table is organized by codec, resolution and frame rate; it does not specify a lower target for a loop or static scene. Treat the minimum as a floor, not the recommended setting. YouTube’s guidance pages are undated; the figures were verified in 2026.
AV1 and H.265 can use the lower listed target, but your encoder must support the codec and YouTube’s ingest requirements. There are no cited tests comparing how these rates look for a particular encoder or loop, so the table does not guarantee a particular perceived quality.
How much upload speed to plan for
YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. The calculation applies to video, audio and any backup stream—not just the video figure in the table.

- For 42 Mbps H.264 video alone: 42 × 1.20 = about 50.4 Mbps of upload capacity.
- For 30 Mbps AV1 or H.265 video alone: 30 × 1.20 = about 36 Mbps of upload capacity.
These are arithmetic illustrations of YouTube’s headroom advice, not separately published YouTube thresholds. Add your audio bitrate and any backup stream before applying the margin:
Planning estimate: (video bitrate + audio bitrate + backup-stream bitrate) × 1.20.

Measure outbound upload capacity and assess its reliability where the encoder will run. A download-speed result does not establish upload capacity, and other devices or users sharing the connection can reduce what is available to the stream. A wired connection may be a useful option where available, but YouTube does not specify Ethernet or a particular cable as a requirement.
Encoder settings for a 4K 30fps stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval. It says not to exceed four seconds between keyframes. For SDR, its advanced settings list Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
- Choose the codec and bitrate: set H.264 to 42 Mbps, or AV1/H.265 to 30 Mbps, if following YouTube’s 4K/30 recommended targets.
- Set bitrate control to CBR: avoid variable bitrate for the specified encoder setup.
- Set keyframes to every two seconds: do not let the interval exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported: YouTube recommends RTMPS. In the encoder, use the stream URL and key supplied in YouTube Live Control Room; keep the stream key private.
- Configure audio and color: select AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth as listed in YouTube’s advanced settings.
Verify the encoder supports the selected codec, 4K resolution and 30 fps together. The presence of a codec in YouTube’s guidance does not mean every encoder supports it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test the loop and account for YouTube latency
Before relying on a continuous loop, run a test using audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Check YouTube’s stream health while the encoder is sending, and monitor the connection under the conditions in which it will operate. A static test image or an idle network test may not reveal issues that appear with the actual stream or shared network use.

YouTube’s bitrate guidance says low-latency mode is unavailable for 4K/2160p; 4K streams use normal latency. YouTube’s general latency help notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering, but that option does not change the 4K limitation.
For a continuous ambience or information loop, decide whether viewers should be able to pause and resume. YouTube’s live settings documentation describes DVR controls; it does not prescribe whether DVR is suitable for a loop.
