YouTube Live Bitrate for 480p: Low-Bandwidth Settings and Looping

YouTube recommends 4 Mbps H.264 or 3 Mbps AV1/H.265 for 480p at 30 fps. Set CBR and 2-second keyframes, allow upload headroom, and use OBS’s loop controls for a prerecorded stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 480p YouTube Live stream at 30 fps, start with 4 Mbps for H.264 or 3 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC, using CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s published minimums are 0.4 Mbps for H.264 and 0.3 Mbps for AV1/H.265, but those minimums do not guarantee acceptable picture quality. For H.264 at the recommended rate, allow about 5 Mbps of stable upload capacity to preserve YouTube’s suggested 20% headroom.

Recommended 480p bitrate and upload speed

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance specifies the 480p bitrate row for 30 fps. Choose the rate that matches the codec you are actually sending; do not select a bitrate based only on the resolution.

Codec YouTube minimum at 480p, 30 fps YouTube recommended bitrate Approximate upload capacity with 20% headroom
H.264 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps About 5 Mbps for the stream, before other network traffic
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 0.3 Mbps 3 Mbps About 3.75 Mbps for the stream, before other network traffic

The minimum figures are encoder settings, not a promise of good-looking video. If bandwidth forces you below the recommended rate, test the result with your actual footage rather than assuming the minimum will look acceptable. YouTube’s bitrate and encoder recommendations are at YouTube’s live encoder settings.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom. The approximate capacity figures above apply that margin to the recommended encoder bitrate; they are not a guarantee of stability. Check outbound upload capacity, not download speed, and account for other devices or traffic sharing the connection. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Set the encoder for a stable 480p stream

  1. Set resolution and frame rate: choose 480p at 30 fps. The cited 480p row is for 30 fps.
  2. Match bitrate to codec: use 4 Mbps for H.264, or 3 Mbps for AV1/H.265, if your stable upload capacity allows it.
  3. Choose CBR: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding for the live encoder.
  4. Set keyframes: use a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  5. Use RTMPS: YouTube recommends RTMPS for live streaming. Enter the stream key in your encoder’s YouTube connection settings and keep it private; anyone with the key may be able to send video to your stream.
  6. Test before the stream: include audio and movement similar to what viewers will see, then check YouTube’s stream health messages while testing. YouTube’s setup guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” The encoder settings and test guidance are in YouTube Help.

The selected bitrate is what your encoder sends to YouTube. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers, so the ingestion setting does not guarantee that every viewer receives a 480p rendition at the same bitrate.

Loop a prerecorded video in OBS

For a simple, non-interactive loop, normal latency is a reasonable starting point. YouTube notes that lower latency matters less when audience interaction is limited and may increase playback buffering; see YouTube’s latency guidance.

Loop one video file

  1. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene.
  2. Choose the video file you want to stream.
  3. Enable Loop in the Media Source settings.
  4. Configure OBS’s YouTube output with the stream key and the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval described above.
  5. Start a test stream and confirm that both the video and audio repeat as expected and that YouTube reports healthy stream status.

Loop a playlist

OBS’s VLC Video source can play a playlist and has a Loop Playlist setting, enabled by default. This source requires VLC. Add the source, select the playlist, and check that the intended files play in order before relying on it for a long stream. OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide (published January 11, 2022).

Archive expectations

YouTube’s encoder setup documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not establish that a longer stream will be archived, so do not rely on an archive being created for a loop that runs 12 hours or more. For the current setup guidance, see YouTube’s live encoder setup.

Rights and reused material

Only stream video and audio you have the rights to use. A loop does not make copyrighted music or footage permissible. YouTube’s live-streaming policies and monetization decisions are separate matters: permission to stream material does not itself guarantee monetization, and repetitive or reused programming may raise separate channel-policy questions. Review the applicable YouTube policies for your channel and content before leaving a stream running.

Troubleshoot a low-bandwidth loop

  • YouTube reports poor stream health: check upload capacity while the stream is running, reduce competing network traffic, and confirm that the connection has the recommended headroom for the configured bitrate.
  • The stream drops or buffers: test a lower bitrate or a more stable connection, then assess the actual picture and audio quality. A bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation is a compromise, not a quality guarantee.
  • The picture looks poor at the published minimum: raise the bitrate toward YouTube’s codec-specific recommendation if upload capacity permits. Minimum values are not visual-quality assurances.
  • The video stops instead of repeating: for a single OBS file, verify that Loop is enabled on the Media Source. For a playlist, confirm the VLC Video source and Loop Playlist setting.
  • There is unexpected buffering despite a healthy encoder setting: for a passive loop, start with normal latency rather than choosing lower latency without a need for real-time audience interaction.
  • The stream will not connect: confirm the correct current YouTube stream key and RTMPS connection settings. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps a prerecorded loop live without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the uploaded video from the cloud.
