For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to wait for a preview, then click Go live—unless you have enabled auto-start. If there is no preview, verify OBS is sending to that event with its current server URL and stream key.
What “connected” does—and does not—tell you
Treat OBS’s connected indicator as encoder-side status, not proof that the YouTube event has been published live. YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow separates receiving the feed from starting the event: the preview should appear in Live Control Room, and you then click Go live unless auto-start is enabled. YouTube’s guidance describes this workflow; it does not define the exact meaning of OBS’s connected label.

Diagnose the problem in order

Open the intended event and check its start step
In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm you are looking at the event you meant to stream. For a scheduled encoder stream, wait for the preview and click Go live. If auto-start is enabled in the stream settings, starting the encoder can start the event instead. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.

If there is no preview, verify the destination and key
Compare the server URL and stream key configured in OBS with the values shown for the intended stream in Live Control Room. A key is specific to the destination YouTube stream; a correct key for a different event will not send the feed to the event you are watching. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key secret. If you reset it, replace the old key in OBS with the new one. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Read the current stream-health message
If YouTube has a preview, check Live Control Room’s stream-health indicator and any specific error before changing settings. The message is the best next clue: it may identify an ingestion problem or point to a format mismatch. YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the stream being sent for errors; see its encoder troubleshooting guide.

If the feed is present but unhealthy, isolate the source, encoder, and connection
Check whether the picture and sound reaching the encoder are correct, whether OBS reports encoder errors or high CPU load, and whether your outbound internet connection is strong enough. A poor picture or sound can originate in the sources routed to the encoder; if those look and sound healthy, investigate outbound connectivity. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend leaving 20% bandwidth headroom, though the page does not provide a publication date for that advice.

Check encoding formats only when the health evidence points there
Do not change codecs as a general response to an offline label. YouTube’s live encoder error reference identifies a format mismatch when video is not H.264 or audio is not AAC. It also lists a keyframe-frequency mismatch between primary and backup streams. Follow the error YouTube actually reports.

Confirm the viewer-facing stream
After starting the event, check that it is accessible from the channel and watch pages, then keep monitoring stream health. This confirms more than an encoder status alone. YouTube includes this check in its streaming tips.
Use the symptom to choose the next check

Common mistakes to avoid
- Watching the wrong event: A feed sent to another stream will not make the event currently open in Live Control Room go live. Match the OBS destination to the intended event.
- Assuming preview means published: A preview confirms YouTube is receiving a feed, but a scheduled event may still need the Go live action.
- Reusing a reset key: Update OBS after resetting a YouTube stream key. Treat the key as a password and do not share it.
- Changing bitrate or codecs without an error to guide you: Start with the event, destination, and YouTube health state. Make format changes when the reported error supports them.
- Buying hardware before isolating the fault: Check the source, OBS’s encoder status and CPU load, and outbound connection first. The symptom alone does not establish a hardware problem.

When to escalate
If the destination and key are correct, the intended event is selected, and you have followed the current health message without resolving the issue, use YouTube’s report-a-problem route from its help guidance. For a problem with logging in to YouTube through third-party software without using a stream key, YouTube directs users to the relevant software support team. The guidance here establishes YouTube’s workflow and troubleshooting; it does not independently verify how OBS implements its connected status.
