If your YouTube Live bitrate keeps fluctuating in OBS, first check which OBS statistic is changing. Rising Dropped Frames (Network) usually points to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Rendering lag and encoder overload are different problems. Match your output to YouTube’s current settings, measure upload capacity while your network is in use, leave bandwidth headroom, then reduce streaming demand or isolate local network problems. OBS’s dynamic bitrate can help during congestion, but it lowers image quality rather than fixing the connection.
First identify what is fluctuating
Open View > Stats in OBS while streaming or running a suitable test. Watch the dropped-frame, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag statistics rather than treating every problem as “bitrate instability.” OBS’s troubleshooting guidance says network dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or an inability to sustain the configured bitrate; it describes OBS itself as an extremely unlikely cause of that symptom (OBS Project, Stream Connection Troubleshooting, 2024-09-30).

- Dropped Frames (Network) rises: OBS is failing to deliver data reliably to the ingest server. Investigate upload capacity, network stability, and local network conditions.
- Rendering lag rises: OBS is struggling to render the scene in time. This points toward graphics or scene-rendering load, not necessarily the internet connection.
- Encoding lag rises: The encoder is not keeping up with the selected output. Check encoder load and output settings separately from network troubleshooting.
- OBS statistics look healthy, but viewers report buffering: The problem may be on viewers’ networks or devices. A lower-bitrate, more accessible stream may help some viewers, with a possible reduction in picture detail (OBS Project, Stream Buffering Troubleshooting, 2021-06-09).
These symptoms can coexist, so note which counter changes and when. A speed test or a single healthy-looking OBS reading cannot by itself establish that a connection will remain stable throughout a stream.

Choose output settings for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s published figures differ by all three; copying another creator’s bitrate without matching their setup can result in an unsuitable target. Its live encoder guidance recommends CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds), AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Confirm the current table before changing a live setup because YouTube’s documentation can change; the page reviewed does not state a publication year (YouTube Help, Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

| Ingest codec | Output | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| H.264 | 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 | 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed bitrate ranges for the specified codec and output modes, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain them. If your encoder or YouTube configuration uses a different codec, resolution, or frame rate, consult the corresponding row in YouTube’s current table instead of using these examples.
Measure upload capacity and leave headroom
- Test upload, not just download. Use a speed test as a starting point, then repeat it at the times and under the network conditions when the instability occurs. A speed test is only a point-in-time sample.
- Compare against the complete outgoing load. Include your stream’s total bitrate, including audio, and account for other people and devices sharing the connection.
- Leave margin. YouTube says total outgoing bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room (YouTube Help, Streaming tips). A connection that only barely meets the target may not have enough room for normal variation or competing traffic.
- Test at the intended settings. Use representative scene movement and audio, then monitor OBS statistics and YouTube stream health/messages during a private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test before relying on the setup for a live event.
Lower the demand if the connection cannot sustain it
If upload capacity is inadequate or variable, reduce the stream bitrate to a level the connection can sustain with headroom. If that is not enough, lower resolution or frame rate and check YouTube’s guidance for the resulting output mode. Retest after each change. Lowering bitrate can reduce visual detail; lowering resolution or frame rate changes the output itself. Select the least disruptive adjustment that stops network drops under representative conditions.

Do not respond to network drops by changing encoder settings at random. First verify that the chosen codec and output mode match YouTube’s recommendations, then compare the target against sustainable upload capacity. If the network counters remain stable but encoding or rendering lag rises, follow that separate branch instead.
Isolate Wi-Fi, software, and hardware causes
- Try Ethernet if you are on Wi-Fi. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi may be unstable. Compare OBS statistics under otherwise similar conditions. A cable can avoid some wireless instability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your ISP or fix congestion upstream.
- Test without a VPN. Temporarily disconnect it where appropriate and compare results. VPN routing can be one possible factor; this does not establish that every VPN causes streaming problems.
- Check security and network-prioritization software. Review firewall or antivirus settings and bundled network “optimization” utilities for rules that may restrict or deprioritize OBS traffic. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it mattered.
- Check software and network equipment. Ensure network drivers are current and inspect router or modem connectivity if symptoms persist. Hardware replacement is not a first step unless diagnosis points to a local hardware fault.
- Review OBS’s network options cautiously. The OBS troubleshooting guide identifies network optimizations and TCP pacing as Windows-only options. It also advises returning the IPv4-only option to its default if it makes no difference. Make one change at a time and compare statistics or logs.
OBS lists these as diagnostic possibilities, not a diagnosis of your particular ISP route, router, computer, or stream. Keep notes on each change and whether the same conditions still reproduce the drops (OBS Project troubleshooting guidance).

Use dynamic bitrate as a fallback
In OBS, open Settings > Advanced > Network and enable Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta), if that option is available in your version. OBS says the setting lowers bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames. The trade-off is reduced picture quality; OBS also cautions that dynamic bitrate does not solve the root cause and presents it as a fallback when the underlying issue cannot be resolved.
If you enable it, monitor the stream during a representative test. Treat it as a way to respond to congestion, not evidence that the connection is fixed or that image quality will remain unchanged.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Likely branch | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) rises | Connection to ingest server is unstable, or the configured bitrate exceeds available capacity. | Check upload under real conditions, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, reduce bitrate or output demand, and test Ethernet if available. |
| Network drops continue despite apparently high test upload | The test may not reflect sustained capacity during streaming; shared use, wireless conditions, routing, or local software may still matter. | Repeat tests at the problem time, account for other network users, isolate VPN/security/network tools one at a time, and compare OBS statistics. |
| Rendering lag rises | Scene rendering is falling behind. | Investigate rendering load and scene/output demand; do not assume a higher upload plan will address rendering lag. |
| Encoding lag rises | The selected encoder is not keeping up with output demand. | Investigate encoder load and settings independently of network dropped frames. |
| OBS shows no rising network drops, but viewers buffer | Viewer-side connection or device limitations may be involved. | Consider a lower bitrate or resolution to make playback more accessible, recognizing the image-quality trade-off. |
| Dynamic bitrate prevents drops but image quality falls | The feature is adapting output to congestion. | Keep it only if that trade-off is acceptable, and continue diagnosing sustainable upload capacity and network stability. |
