Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. If your stream uses AV1 or H.265/HEVC instead, YouTube’s recommended range is 4–10 Mbps. These are YouTube live-ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular Raspberry Pi, camera, software setup, or internet connection can sustain the stream.
Recommended YouTube Live settings for 1080p30
Choose the bitrate range for the codec your encoder actually sends. Many Raspberry Pi camera workflows use H.264, but do not assume that without checking your output settings. YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommendations:

| Output codec | YouTube-recommended video bitrate at 1080p30 |
|---|---|
| H.264 | 5–14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 4–10 Mbps |
For a typical H.264 setup, a bitrate inside the 5–14 Mbps range is the right starting point. The higher end requires more sustained upload capacity and encoding performance; the recommended range does not mean every Raspberry Pi can reliably deliver every setting. YouTube’s figures are for live ingestion, not its separate recommendations for uploaded video files. YouTube Live encoder settings

Set CBR and keyframes before going live
- Bitrate mode: Constant bitrate (CBR), as recommended by YouTube for live encoding.
- Keyframe interval: Two seconds. YouTube recommends this interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Ingest protocol: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS. Use the endpoint and stream key shown for your broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room.
Encoder applications use different labels for these options. If a setting is expressed as a keyframe interval in frames rather than seconds, use a value that corresponds to two seconds at your chosen frame rate; confirm the application’s interpretation rather than assuming its default.

Pi 4 and hardware H.264
The Picamera2 manual describes its H264Encoder as using the Pi’s built-in hardware through V4L2 and supporting up to 1080p30. That statement describes the documented encoder capability; it should not be generalized to every Raspberry Pi model, camera, or full streaming pipeline. Picamera2 manual
Pi 5 and software encoding
Raspberry Pi’s current camera software guidance describes Pi 5 video encoding as software-based. It includes a --low-latency option for real-time streaming; the lower latency trades some coding efficiency for latency. Consequently, Pi 4 hardware-encoding advice and Pi 5 software-encoding behavior are not interchangeable. Sustainable performance depends on the exact workload and configuration, so do not assume a bitrate is achievable solely because it falls within YouTube’s range. Test the whole stream, not just the bitrate
- Confirm output settings. Verify resolution is 1920×1080, frame rate is 30 fps, and identify the encoded codec. Select the matching YouTube bitrate range, CBR, and the two-second keyframe interval.
- Check upload capacity under realistic conditions. Run a speed test on the connection the Pi will use. Available upload throughput must accommodate the video stream as well as audio and ordinary network variation. YouTube does not specify a universal headroom percentage here, so do not treat the video bitrate as the entire connection requirement or rely on an invented fixed margin.
- Run a private or otherwise suitable test broadcast. Include movement and audio representative of the real event. A static test image may not expose the same encoding, audio, or network issues.
- Watch Live Control Room stream health. Check its health indicators and messages while the test is running, then adjust bitrate or investigate the encoder and connection before the real broadcast.
The camera toolchain can encode and stream camera video over a network, but that capability alone does not establish a complete YouTube RTMPS setup. Audio capture, muxing, network stability, software versions, and configuration all affect the result. The official documentation does not establish one universal throughput figure for every Pi workload.

- YouTube reports connection or stream-health problems: Test the actual upload connection during the conditions in which you will broadcast. Try a lower bitrate within the recommendation for your codec, and check for network variation.
- The Pi cannot sustain the selected output: Confirm the model and whether encoding is hardware-based or software-based. Reduce the workload or bitrate and test again; the recommended YouTube range is not a Pi performance guarantee.
- The stream starts but motion or audio is unreliable: Repeat the test with representative movement and audio, and review encoder output and Live Control Room messages. Verify capture, encoding, and muxing rather than changing bitrate alone.
- Keyframe or bitrate settings do not match the recommendation: Check the encoder’s actual output settings. Set CBR, use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
- The camera streams over the network but YouTube does not receive a usable live stream: Check the complete path, including audio, muxing, RTMPS configuration, stream key, and software versions. Network camera streaming by itself does not confirm that the YouTube ingest pipeline is configured correctly.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video or playlist live on YouTube rather than broadcast a live camera, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not going live from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
