Microlink vs. Urlbox for Website Screenshots: Which API Is Easier to Use?

Microlink looks easier for a no-key first screenshot test; Urlbox offers render links and explicit sync/async POST workflows. Compare setup, output, and plan terms.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the quickest first experiment, Microlink looks simpler in its published documentation: its free screenshot endpoint accepts a GET request without an API key. Urlbox also documents a direct render-link option, but securing render links requires signing them; it additionally offers synchronous and asynchronous POST workflows. This is a comparison of the vendors’ published setup instructions, not a hands-on usability test.

Quick comparison

Question Microlink Urlbox
Fastest documented first request GET request to the API with a URL and screenshot=true; the free endpoint requires no API key. The API page lists 25 requests per day for Free. Microlink API A GET render link can return an image. The quick start describes a 7-day free trial; secure render links require signing the options with a secret key. Urlbox quick start
Production request choices Pro requests use an x-api-key header. The screenshot endpoint returns JSON with screenshot details and an asset URL; an embedding mode can make the API URL behave as an image. Microlink API · Screenshot parameter docs Render links, synchronous POST, and asynchronous POST are documented. POST supports bearer-token authentication; asynchronous rendering can use polling or a webhook. Urlbox overview · Urlbox API reference
Best fit suggested by the documented workflow A low-friction first test, or an application that wants screenshot data in a JSON response. An application that wants a direct render URL or needs to choose between synchronous and asynchronous rendering, including polling or callbacks.

These services expose different workflows and quota definitions, so a headline price-per-render comparison would not establish equivalent value. Select based on how your application will request and consume images.

Try Microlink with a first screenshot request

Microlink documents a GET request to https://api.microlink.io with the target URL and screenshot=true. For example, using cURL:

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
curl -G "https://api.microlink.io"
  -d "url=https://example.com"
  -d "screenshot=true"

The response is JSON. The screenshot information is under data.screenshot, including an asset URL and image details. This means your application normally needs to parse the response and then use or fetch that asset URL, rather than treating the initial response as the image itself. The screenshot parameter documentation includes examples in JavaScript, Python, Ruby, PHP, Go, and the CLI.

When you only need the image

Microlink documents embed=screenshot.url for making the API URL behave as a direct image, and recommends meta=false when screenshot capture is the only needed result, so metadata extraction is skipped. Consult the embedding guide and screenshot guide for those options.

Credentials and limits

Microlink says its free endpoint requires no API key and lists a limit of 25 requests per day. Its API page lists Pro at $49 per month for 46,000 requests per month; Pro uses an x-api-key header to pro.microlink.io. These vendor-published prices and quotas were shown on the official page checked October 3, 2026, and may change. Pro also lists features such as proxy resolution, configurable TTL, custom headers, and a custom cache key. See the current API page for live terms.

How Urlbox’s request paths differ

Render link

Urlbox’s quick start demonstrates a GET render link built from an API key, output format, and query options. It says secure render links use a token made by signing the options with a secret key. That signing requirement is an extra setup step when you need a secure direct image URL. The quick start describes a 7-day free trial. Urlbox quick start

Synchronous or asynchronous POST

The API reference documents a synchronous endpoint at /v1/render/sync, accepts URL or HTML input, and supports JSON or form-encoded options. It also documents bearer-token authentication. Urlbox describes asynchronous POST rendering with polling or a webhook, which can suit workflows where a job should finish outside the request-response path. Its documentation says the only required option is either url or html. Urlbox API reference · Urlbox overview

The asynchronous option adds a choice about job completion and result retrieval; it is useful when the application needs that workflow, but unnecessary complexity for a one-off image if a render link is enough. Urlbox also describes screenshots and other render types on its screenshot API page.

Which one is easier for your implementation?

  • Choose Microlink for the simplest documented first test: the no-key free endpoint can be called with one GET request. The docs-based judgment is about initial setup, not measured integration time.
  • Choose Urlbox if its request shape fits your app: direct render links work for image-oriented use, while sync and async POST give more explicit server-side rendering workflows. Secure render links add token signing.
  • Decide how your code consumes the result: Microlink’s standard screenshot response is JSON containing an asset URL; Urlbox’s render links can return image content, while its POST API offers JSON responses and asynchronous handling.
  • Check the exact controls you need: both document configurable rendering. Microlink also presents itself as a broader URL-to-data API, while Urlbox focuses on screenshots and other render types. Compare the relevant options in their own documentation rather than assuming feature parity.

Compare current quotas and prices carefully

The following vendor-listed terms were present on official pages checked October 3, 2026. They are not a like-for-like cost benchmark: Microlink lists requests and Urlbox lists renders, and plan capabilities differ. Confirm current terms before choosing.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP image:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for options and response details. ScreenshotNeo says it accepts cookie/consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

What this comparison can and cannot tell you

The ease-of-use conclusion follows the vendors’ published setup paths; no requests were run and no application integration, latency, error handling, rendering quality, or developer experience was independently tested. Those factors can determine which API is easier in a real project, so test your own target pages and result-handling path before committing.
