YouTube Live Audio Bitrate Too Low: OBS Settings to Fix It

For stereo YouTube Live, set OBS’s streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps—not merely the recording bitrate. Here’s how to check the output, codec, sample rate, and a zero-bitrate warning.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard stereo YouTube Live stream, set OBS’s streaming audio bitrate to 128 Kbps. In OBS, open Settings → Output and adjust the streaming output—not just the recording output. Use AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS and a 44.1 kHz sample rate for stereo. The 384 Kbps recommendation applies to 5.1 surround sound, not ordinary stereo. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers these recommendations.

Set the correct audio bitrate in OBS

  1. Open the output settings. In OBS, go to Settings → Output. The available controls depend on the selected output mode and OBS version.
  2. Find the streaming audio bitrate. In Simple output mode, use the streaming audio bitrate control. In Advanced mode, check the streaming output settings and the audio track actually sent to YouTube. Advanced mode separates stream and recording controls, so changing the recording bitrate alone will not fix the live stream.
  3. Choose the value for your channel layout. For stereo, set 128 Kbps. Set 384 Kbps only if you are sending 5.1 surround sound. These are YouTube recommendations, not interchangeable quality presets.
  4. Check sample rate and codec. For stereo, use 44.1 kHz; for 5.1, YouTube recommends 48 kHz. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live-streaming error guidance.
  5. Apply the change and test. Run a test stream with audio and video movement similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and any messages before going live.

If YouTube reports that the current audio bitrate is 0

A displayed 128 Kbps setting does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving an active audio stream at that rate. The report that the current bitrate is zero is a symptom, not a diagnosis: the official guidance confirms the recommended rate and platform-side monitoring but does not identify one universal cause for a zero reading.

  • Confirm that the audio source is active in OBS and that its meter responds when sound is present.
  • Check that the active source is routed to the audio track used by the stream, and that this is the track enabled for streaming output.
  • Verify the streaming output’s bitrate, codec, and sample rate; do not rely on the recording configuration.
  • Start a test broadcast and check YouTube’s stream health again. If the audio remains at zero, isolate the source and routing path one at a time rather than repeatedly raising the bitrate.

Distinguish low audio bitrate from a bandwidth problem

The audio bitrate is the encoded rate for the audio track. Upload capacity is a separate limit on the combined stream. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. If the connection cannot sustain the full stream, lower the video bitrate or resolution as needed while keeping the stereo audio setting appropriate. The 20% margin applies to total stream bandwidth, not to the audio bitrate control. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and streaming tips.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos around the clock, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than an OBS audio-setting fix. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can be off while StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos.
