Convert a PNG or JPEG screenshot with Google’s cwebp command-line encoder, then inspect the WebP at the size it will appear on your site. For example, cwebp -q 80 screenshot.png -o thumbnail.webp uses Google’s documented quality example; it is a starting point, not a universal best setting.
Convert a screenshot to WebP with cwebp
Install Google’s cwebp utility for your operating system using the instructions for your environment, then run this command from a terminal:

cwebp -q 80 screenshot.png -o thumbnail.webp
Replace screenshot.png with the path to your PNG or JPEG and thumbnail.webp with the desired output path. The -o option names the output file, so use a .webp extension. Google’s documentation describes -q 80 as an example; judge the result visually rather than treating 80 as an ideal for every screenshot. Google’s cwebp documentation lists supported inputs and encoding options.

If the output needs a different size, add -resize followed by width and height in pixels. Use 0 for one dimension to preserve the aspect ratio:

cwebp -q 80 -resize 480 0 screenshot.png -o thumbnail.webp
This creates a 480-pixel-wide output and calculates its height proportionally. Use -crop before resizing only when you need to change the framing; cwebp crops before it scales. Check the documentation for the crop arguments and ensure the chosen crop fits within the source image.
Keep the original
Convert from a copy or retain the original screenshot. That lets you compare another quality setting, adjust the crop, or produce a lossless version without having to recreate the source.

Choose compression by inspecting the actual image
Lossy WebP
Lossy encoding is cwebp’s default. Its -q setting controls RGB compression quality from 0 to 100: lower values generally mean smaller files and more visible loss. Start with a reasonable test value, then compare the output with the source at the thumbnail’s actual rendered size. Pay particular attention to small lettering, thin rules, icons, and sharp interface edges.

Lossless and near-lossless WebP
Use -lossless when preserving source pixels matters more than minimizing file size:

- Rotate, resize and compress digital photos
- Easily add captions or watermarks to your images
- Compress thousands of photos at a time with batch conversion
- Convert images directly from the right-click menu
cwebp -lossless screenshot.png -o thumbnail.webp
Lossless output is not guaranteed to be smaller than the source or than a lossy WebP. If lossless output is too large, compare -near_lossless, which preprocesses the image before lossless encoding. Its documented range is 0 (most preprocessing) to 100 (none); inspect the result because preprocessing can change pixels.
Transparency and metadata
cwebp supports alpha transparency and provides a separate alpha-quality control. If RGB values in fully transparent pixels must be retained, use -exact. For metadata, -metadata can copy all, exif, icc, or xmp; the documented default is none. Preserve an ICC color profile when your publishing workflow requires it, and verify the output in the systems where it will be used.

Check the output before publishing
- Compare appearance: open the WebP in a browser or image viewer next to the source. Look closely at text, line art, icons, edges, transparency, and crop.
- View at intended size: judge the thumbnail at the dimensions and display scale visitors will see, not only when zoomed in.
- Compare file size: check the source and converted file sizes. The savings depend on the image and settings; there is no guaranteed reduction percentage.
- Test delivery: confirm your site or publishing system accepts and serves WebP as expected. Keep the source available until the published result is verified.

- The command is not found: install cwebp for your operating system or correct the executable’s PATH, then reopen the terminal and try again.
- The input cannot be opened: check the spelling and path, confirm the file exists, and try an absolute path if the terminal is in a different directory.
- The output is blurry or text is damaged: raise the lossy
-qvalue or compare lossless output. Inspect at the target size; numeric quality alone does not guarantee legibility. - The file is larger than expected: test a lower lossy quality or compare near-lossless encoding. Lossless output may be larger, and conversion does not guarantee a size reduction.
- The thumbnail framing is wrong: crop to the desired area before scaling. Verify the crop dimensions against the source and inspect the resulting aspect ratio.
- Colors differ after conversion: check whether your workflow requires an ICC profile and explicitly preserve metadata as needed. cwebp’s documented default copies no metadata.
- Transparent areas show unexpected color: verify alpha handling; use
-exactif RGB values in fully transparent pixels need to be preserved.
