YouTube Live Audio Bitrate Settings for a Music Playlist Stream

YouTube recommends 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz for stereo live audio. Here are the right codec choices, 5.1 settings, reliability checks, and copyright considerations for playlist streams.

For a stereo music playlist on YouTube Live, set your encoder to 128 Kbps audio at 44.1 kHz. That is YouTube’s recommended stereo ingest setting; it does not guarantee that every viewer receives an identical audio encoding, because YouTube transcodes live streams for different devices and network conditions.

Recommended audio settings for a playlist stream

YouTube publishes the same stereo audio recommendation for a music playlist as for other stereo live streams. Its guidance does not specify a separate bitrate for playlists or audio-only streams with a static visual.

Stream format Audio bitrate Sample rate Codec guidance
Stereo 128 Kbps 44.1 kHz RTMP/RTMPS: AAC or MP3; HLS: AAC, AC3, or EAC3
5.1 surround 384 Kbps 48 kHz RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC for 5.1; HLS lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not independently measured results. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that setting a higher bitrate than recommended improves the audio listeners ultimately hear.

Choose settings based on your stream format

Stereo music playlist

For an ordinary two-channel playlist, select stereo, 128 Kbps, and 44.1 kHz in the encoder. Choose a supported audio codec for the protocol you use: AAC or MP3 with RTMP/RTMPS, or AAC, AC3, or EAC3 with HLS.

5.1 surround

Use 384 Kbps at 48 kHz only when your source and full setup actually carry 5.1 audio. If you ingest over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC: YouTube’s guidance specifies AAC for 5.1 on that protocol. A stereo playlist should not be configured as 5.1 just to use a higher bitrate.

RTMP/RTMPS or HLS

Codec options depend on ingest protocol. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than RTMP, so factor that in if how quickly the live output reaches viewers matters. The audio recommendation remains 128 Kbps stereo or 384 Kbps 5.1 in YouTube’s HLS guidance.

Test audio and protect stream reliability

  1. Match the planned stream. Before going live, test with audio and movement similar to what you intend to broadcast. For a playlist, check representative tracks and transitions rather than testing only silence.
  2. Check the encoder output. Confirm the channel format, bitrate, sample rate, codec, and ingest protocol agree with the settings above.
  3. Leave network headroom. YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total bitrate of the stream. Include video and audio in that total; do not treat the audio bitrate as the stream’s entire bandwidth requirement.
  4. Watch stream health. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the event so you can identify delivery problems while the stream is running.

A dedicated hardware encoder is optional, not a requirement for reaching YouTube’s recommended stereo audio setting. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for events that need higher production value.

Check music rights before you stream

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder and warn the streamer; continued use can temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A third-party rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for a licensed track to proceed without that interruption.

YouTube’s livestream terms say providers must hold the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants. Creator Music tracks cannot be used in live streams under its published usage details. These platform terms do not determine whether a particular license covers your stream; check the rights and territories relevant to your use before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common audio-setting problems

  • The encoder rejects the codec: Check that it is supported for your ingest protocol. RTMP/RTMPS accepts AAC or MP3; HLS lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3.
  • A 5.1 stream does not work over RTMP/RTMPS: Confirm that the audio codec is AAC and that the source is genuinely 5.1. YouTube specifies AAC for 5.1 with this protocol.
  • Audio drops or the stream-health indicator shows delivery trouble: Test the setup with representative program material and check your upload capacity. Keep the recommended 20% bandwidth headroom above the combined stream bitrate.
  • A track triggers a warning or interruption: Review the stream’s copyright status and confirm that your rights cover live streaming. If a licensed rights holder uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted.
