For a 720p YouTube gaming VOD rerun, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC and 8 Mbps for H.264, at either 30 or 60 fps. Its listed minimums are 2 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 3 Mbps for H.264—not guarantees of good quality on every game or connection. If your upload is slow or variable, choose a bitrate it can sustain with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; if needed, reduce frame rate or resolution and test before going public.
What bitrate should I use for a 720p stream?
These are YouTube’s live-ingest settings for 720p. The codec changes the recommendation, while YouTube lists the same bitrate at 30 and 60 fps.

The minimum column is YouTube’s listed minimum setting, not a promise that fast-moving gameplay will look clean at that rate. The recommendations are not mandatory minimums; on a constrained connection, stable delivery matters more than selecting a number your upload cannot sustain.

How to choose a setting for a slow or variable upload
1. Check stable upload capacity
Use a speed test that reports upload speed, not just download. A single speed-test result is only a snapshot: test at the time and place you expect to stream, and account for other devices or applications using the connection.

2. Keep 20% upload headroom
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. As a calculation from that guidance, divide the intended total stream bitrate by 0.8 to estimate the upload capacity to reserve. For example, a 3 Mbps stream calls for about 3.75 Mbps of available upload capacity, before other network use. If you use a primary and backup stream, both bitrates plus headroom must fit the outbound connection. YouTube’s streaming tips explain the bandwidth guidance.
3. Match the bitrate to the codec and connection
If your encoder supports AV1 or H.265, YouTube’s 720p recommendation is lower than its H.264 recommendation. That table does not establish that the codecs produce identical perceived quality at a given bitrate; test the codec your setup will actually use. If you cannot sustain the recommended setting with headroom, a listed minimum may be a practical starting point, but check the resulting image for blockiness or other artifacts.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
4. Consider 30 fps before sacrificing stability
YouTube lists the same bitrate values for 720p30 and 720p60, but 60 fps can be more demanding of an encoder and connection in practice. For a slow or inconsistent upload, try 30 fps first. If the stream remains unstable, test a lower resolution rather than repeatedly pushing a bitrate the connection cannot hold.
Encoder settings and a safe test
YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols, supports H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR) with a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder to the chosen 720p frame rate and codec, then enter a bitrate your measured upload can support with the recommended headroom. The available options and exact labels vary by encoder. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

- Set up the rerun in your encoder and select the YouTube ingest protocol and stream key for the intended broadcast. Keep the stream key private.
- Set 1280 × 720 output, your chosen 30 or 60 fps, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and the codec-specific bitrate. If the upload cannot sustain the recommendation, begin lower rather than treating it as compulsory.
- Run a private or unlisted test with the same gameplay motion and audio you expect in the rerun. YouTube recommends testing similar content and monitoring stream health; a static screen is not a representative test for fast-moving gameplay. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Watch the stream health indicators and the playback on another device or connection. If delivery drops or the image breaks up, reduce bitrate, try 30 fps, or lower resolution, then test again before making the rerun public.
Live ingest bitrate is not VOD upload bitrate
A prerecorded video broadcast as a live stream uses live-ingest settings while it is being sent to YouTube. Uploading a finished 720p video file is a separate workflow with different encoding recommendations: YouTube lists 5 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25 or 30 fps) and 7.5 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50 or 60 fps). Do not use those finished-file upload figures as the live stream bitrate. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Protect the rerun archive
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving the VOD matters, keep a local recording or archive backup rather than relying only on the live-stream archive. Details: YouTube Help: Archive live streams.

Troubleshoot common 720p rerun problems
- Stream health reports inadequate bitrate or delivery trouble: Compare the stream’s total bitrate with stable upload capacity, including YouTube’s 20% headroom and other network traffic. Lower the bitrate if necessary.
- The speed test looks fast, but the stream still falters: The test may not reflect upload capacity during the broadcast, or other devices may be consuming bandwidth. Test under representative conditions and measure upload, not download.
- Fast gameplay looks smeared or blocky: The selected bitrate may be too low for the footage. Test the recommended rate if your connection can sustain it; otherwise consider 30 fps or a lower resolution and inspect the actual result.
- The stream key or ingest connection is rejected: Confirm that the encoder is using the intended YouTube stream key and a supported RTMP/RTMPS ingest setup. YouTube’s encoder setup steps are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- The live rerun worked, but no complete archive appeared: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to carry a long rerun, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off. It is for YouTube streams from uploaded videos, not live camera feeds.
