For a full-document screenshot, use fullPage: true. If a fixed footer still covers page content, temporarily override that specific footer’s CSS so it no longer sits over the document, then capture again. Also check for an unintended clip rectangle: it can cut off the image independently of the footer. Puppeteer documents fullPage as false by default and says that setting it to true captures the full page (ScreenshotOptions reference).
Start with the right kind of screenshot
A viewport screenshot shows the visible browser area. To capture the complete document, use Puppeteer’s fullPage option:

await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The option defaults to false, so omitting it can explain why content outside the viewport is missing. Puppeteer’s screenshot guide also documents screenshots of individual elements; use an element screenshot if the target is a particular component rather than the entire page.

Why a fixed footer can cover content
A fixed footer is positioned relative to the viewport instead of reserving its usual space in the document flow. As a result, it can visually sit on top of content in a full-page image. This is a layout overlap, not necessarily a failure of Puppeteer to extend the capture beyond the viewport.

If the footer should not appear in the image, hide it temporarily. If it should remain visible but stop covering the document, test changing only that footer to normal flow for the capture. The exact selector and resulting layout depend on the site; Puppeteer does not document a dedicated fixed-footer switch.

After navigating to the page, add a narrowly scoped style override and take the full-page screenshot:

Inspect the output. Changing a footer’s positioning can alter the page layout, so verify that it does not introduce unwanted spacing, movement, or other visual changes.

If the page remains in use after capture, restore its original style or reload the page to return to its original state.
This is a page-specific CSS workaround to test, not a guaranteed fix for every site. If the footer is meant to be absent, hiding just that element may be more appropriate than changing its positioning.

Check for an unintended screenshot clip
Puppeteer’s clip option defines a capture rectangle with x, y, width, and height. If those values describe a smaller or misplaced region than intended, the screenshot will be cut off even when fullPage is enabled. Inspect the screenshot call and correct or remove the clip if you want the full document.

When to use captureBeyondViewport
captureBeyondViewport is not a universal fix for content hidden by a fixed footer. The current API reference says its default is false when no clip is provided and true when a clip is provided. Setting it to true therefore may not resolve either a layout overlap or incorrect clip geometry.
First confirm the intended output, inspect any clip, and address the footer’s layout if it is covering content. Change captureBeyondViewport only when it applies to the particular capture configuration you are using.
Check Puppeteer and browser compatibility before using old workarounds
The current Puppeteer API reference displays version 25.12.0. Puppeteer issue #5080, opened in 2019, discusses historical clipping behavior associated with a Chromium roll and later mentions a user-reported Blink flag. That thread is useful context, not a current recommendation: confirm that your installed Puppeteer release supports the browser version you are running, and prefer the current API over copying old flags without checking compatibility.

Troubleshoot the most common cutoff causes
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Only the visible browser area appears | fullPage may be omitted; it defaults to false. |
Set fullPage: true for a full-document screenshot. |
| The footer overlaps page content in the image | The footer may be fixed relative to the viewport. | Test a targeted temporary override such as position: static, or hide the footer if it should not be shown. |
| The image ends at an unexpected boundary | A clip rectangle may be too small or positioned incorrectly. |
Check its x, y, width, and height; correct or remove the clip. |
| A copied flag or workaround has no effect | It may refer to historical Chromium or Puppeteer behavior. | Check the installed Puppeteer and browser compatibility, then use current documented options. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot without managing Puppeteer and browser setup, ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot through one GET request. For example, using cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the API details. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and each response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also provides an MCP server for AI agents, with the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
