If OBS reports an encoder overload while streaming to YouTube with Apple VT H.264, first confirm that the encoder is supported on your Mac and installed OBS/macOS versions. Then reduce OBS output demands, simplify the scene, and check other GPU-heavy apps. YouTube bitrate and keyframe settings matter for stream ingest, but they are separate from the local encoding or rendering workload that can trigger an OBS overload warning.
1. Confirm your Mac and encoder are compatible
In OBS, open Settings → Output and check whether the selected encoder is Apple VT H.264 Hardware Encoder. Note your Mac’s processor architecture, macOS version, and OBS version before changing settings.

OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance says Apple Silicon supports H.264 streaming. It says Intel Macs cannot stream with VideoToolbox because of a constant-bitrate limitation and should use x264 instead. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is a version-specific nuance: the VideoToolbox implementation on OBS’s moving master branch uses Apple Silicon’s constant-bitrate property with macOS 13 or newer; on Intel or older macOS it logs that it will use average bitrate. That implementation detail is not a promise about every released OBS build. Check the encoder information in your installed version’s log alongside the current VideoToolbox implementation.

- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
2. Lower output demands with one change at a time
In OBS → Settings → Video, check Output (Scaled) Resolution and Common FPS Values. If the warning continues, test a lower output resolution or change 60 fps to 30 fps, one adjustment at a time. Lower resolution can reduce encoder load; a lower frame rate reduces both rendering and encoding work. OBS specifically advises trying 30 fps if 60 fps is not working.
Leave Base (Canvas) Resolution unchanged initially. OBS advises lowering the canvas only when resources are severely constrained, because doing so can require resizing and repositioning sources. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains these workload adjustments.

3. Check scene and system workload
The scene itself can contribute to the load, even when the encoder is hardware-accelerated. For a controlled test, temporarily simplify the scene and close unrelated GPU-intensive programs.
- Reduce the number or resolution of media sources where practical.
- Disable expensive filters temporarily and test again.
- Reduce browser-source overlays or complex animations.
- Check Activity Monitor for other GPU-intensive applications.
Some sources can continue using resources while hidden. If a simplified scene streams without the warning, restore elements gradually to identify which source or effect adds the most load.

4. Set YouTube ingest options separately
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate ranges vary by resolution and frame rate. These are ingest recommendations—not a direct fix for local OBS encoding or rendering overload. You also need an internet connection that can sustain the selected bitrate.
| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3–8 Mbps |
These ranges are YouTube’s published recommendations in its live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026; they are not performance measurements or guarantees for a particular Mac. For YouTube H.264 over RTMP/RTMPS, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Run a speed test if you are unsure whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate.

5. Test the real workload and read stream health
Before the event, test with audio and movement similar to the real stream, rather than a static scene. Monitor OBS and YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test. Changing the bitrate can address connection or ingest problems, but it does not by itself establish or resolve a local encoder-overload cause.

6. Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| Overload continues after selecting Apple VT H.264 | Verify Mac architecture, OBS/macOS versions, and the selected encoder. If using an Intel Mac, follow OBS guidance to use x264 for streaming. |
| Overload occurs at 60 fps or high resolution | Test a lower output resolution or 30 fps, changing one setting at a time. |
| A simple scene works but the full scene overloads | Re-enable sources, filters, and browser overlays gradually; inspect Activity Monitor for competing GPU work. |
| OBS appears stable but YouTube reports stream-health or connection trouble | Check the selected bitrate against YouTube’s H.264 recommendations and confirm the connection can sustain it. Treat this separately from local OBS workload. |
If the cause remains unclear, the useful diagnostic details are your Mac model and chip, macOS and OBS versions, output resolution and frame rate, encoder and rate-control settings, OBS log, Stats data (including rendering lag, encoding lag, and dropped frames), scene/source list, and YouTube’s stream-health message. Without those details, there is no reliable way to identify one root cause or promise a universal fix.

If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to running OBS on your Mac: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; there is no quality-tier pricing. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
