An OBS “encoder error” can mean the encoder cannot start, the computer cannot render or encode smoothly, the connection to YouTube is unstable, or YouTube is rejecting the incoming format. Match the symptom to the failure point before changing settings: refresh the stream key for a start failure, reduce local load for encoding overload, and investigate the network for dropped frames or disconnections.
Identify where the YouTube stream is failing
Before changing several settings at once, record the exact OBS message and note whether the failure happens before output starts, while OBS is encoding, or after the stream has connected. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and check stream health and its timestamped messages. YouTube marks red errors as critical and yellow errors as moderate; a message may continue to appear while the underlying issue persists. YouTube’s live streaming error reference explains the dashboard messages.

| What you see | Likely branch | First useful check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot start the output or third-party encoder | Stream key or software integration | Refresh the YouTube stream key in Live Control Room and update OBS. |
| OBS starts, then reports encoding overload or produces choppy output | Local rendering or encoding capacity | Check GPU and CPU load; reduce competing load, scene complexity, resolution, or frame rate. |
| OBS starts, but reports dropped frames or disconnects | Network path or ingest stability | Check bitrate, ingest server, Wi-Fi, VPN or security software, drivers, and network equipment. |
| YouTube reports “Incorrect stream format” | Ingest format configuration | For this error, YouTube says to use H.264 video and AAC audio. |
| OBS preview or local recording looks healthy, but the live stream is unstable | Outbound network or YouTube ingest path | Test the outbound connection and inspect Live Control Room health messages. |
These are diagnostic signposts, not proof of a root cause. If you need to escalate, keep the exact OBS error or log, operating system, selected encoder, stream format, and YouTube dashboard message together.
If OBS says “error starting your encoder” or output will not start
Refresh the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the Stream section.
- Copy the current stream key.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, replace the existing key with the current one, and apply the change.
- Try starting the stream again and check the Live Control Room for a new health message.
YouTube’s troubleshooting advice for a third-party encoder that cannot connect is: “To fix it, get a new stream key in the Live Control Room and update your encoder.” If OBS signs in to YouTube without using a stream key and the encoder still cannot start, YouTube advises contacting the streaming software provider; the integration may need an update. Update and inspect OBS
YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Check the OBS preview or output directly, the YouTube dashboard’s encoder messages, CPU load, and a local recording if one is available. If the preview or recording itself has faulty video or audio, focus on sources and local encoding. If it looks healthy but the live feed does not, test the outbound connection and inspect YouTube’s ingest health.
If OBS reports encoding overload or output is choppy
Encoding overload is a local performance problem, not by itself evidence that YouTube has rejected the stream. OBS identifies GPU saturation or a bottleneck between the GPU and the rest of the system as possible causes. Make one change at a time, then test whether the output improves.

- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator. OBS Project says this can resolve GPU overload in many cases and recommends trying it before the other steps in its encoding performance guide.
- Reduce competing GPU work. Close applications you know are GPU-heavy. If you are streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync and lower its graphics settings.
- Simplify the OBS scene. Reduce demanding sources and filters; check browser sources in particular if the problem began after adding or changing one.
- Lower output demands if needed. Reduce output resolution or frame rate. OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps instead of 60 fps when performance is insufficient.
Check CPU and GPU load while the problem is happening. If a change fixes the issue, retain the lowest-impact change that makes the stream stable rather than lowering quality further without need.

OBS uses “dropped frames” in this context for an unstable connection to the remote ingest server or a connection that cannot sustain the configured bitrate. This points first to the network path, not automatically to a failing encoder or GPU. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests checking:

- Whether VPN, security, or network-optimization software is interfering.
- Network drivers, Wi-Fi stability, modem or router, and cabling.
- Whether you can use a wired connection; OBS recommends wired networking where possible.
OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting bitrate suggestion when diagnosing dropped frames. Treat it as a troubleshooting heuristic, not a YouTube guarantee: the usable upload rate must remain stable, and the bitrate must also respect the service’s limits. If these checks do not resolve the problem, contact your ISP rather than assuming the GPU needs replacement.

Compare OBS’s output settings with YouTube’s current live encoder settings. The page lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The actual options available in OBS depend on its version and your hardware, so confirm which combinations your setup supports.

If the Live Control Room specifically reports “Incorrect stream format,” YouTube says to use H.264 video with AAC audio. Do not treat that fix as a general answer to a local encoder-start failure or dropped frames; use the dashboard’s exact message to choose the branch. YouTube’s error reference describes the format error.
Use the bitrate row for your actual output
YouTube’s current settings page gives recommended bitrate settings by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The H.264 examples below are recommendations, not a universal minimum for every connection or a performance study.

| H.264 output | Minimum bitrate listed by YouTube | Recommended bitrate listed by YouTube |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These values are for H.264; YouTube lists different recommended values for H.265 and AV1. Choose the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and check YouTube’s current table before changing a live setup.
Test before relying on the next stream
YouTube recommends a test that includes audio and motion similar to the real stream. Start a test stream, monitor Live Control Room health and messages, and review the result before relying on the setup for an important event. A static preview alone may not expose a problem that appears during motion or sustained encoding. YouTube’s encoder settings and setup guidance covers stream testing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a fix for an OBS encoder error. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps looping the uploaded video without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It does not go live from a camera.
