On a Windows laptop, set the lid-close action to Do nothing while the laptop is plugged in. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does, change When I close the lid in the Plugged in column, and save. Keep the laptop connected to power. This prevents the lid action from putting the PC to sleep; it cannot prevent internet failures, shutdowns, or every interruption to a YouTube stream.
Set a Windows laptop to stay awake when the lid closes
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security > Power Options.
- Choose Choose what closing the lid does.
- Under When I close the lid, set the Plugged in option to Do nothing.
- Select Save changes.
The battery setting is separate. Change the On battery option only if you specifically need the laptop to keep running unplugged; a long stream is better served by a reliable power connection. Microsoft documents this lid-action control for Windows 10 and Windows 11 in its guide to shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating a PC.

Check the stream before closing the lid
- Connect the laptop to power and confirm the intended power plan is active.
- Start the OBS stream, or verify that it is already live and stable.
- Close the lid, then check the broadcast from another device if possible.
Microsoft notes that many PCs, especially laptops and tablets, go to sleep when the lid is closed. If the computer sleeps, OBS cannot continue its normal encoding and network work during that sleep. The lid setting changes the computer’s sleep response; it does not guarantee that the network or YouTube connection will remain uninterrupted.

macOS does not use the Windows When I close the lid menu. For a Mac laptop connected to an external display and used with its lid closed, Apple says to connect the Mac to power and use an external keyboard and mouse. Supported arrangements and requirements vary by model. Apple’s instructions for M3 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro dual-display use also specify supported macOS versions and display arrangements; check the guidance for your model before relying on a closed-lid setup: Apple’s external-display guidance.

Some Macs have a setting to prevent automatic sleeping when the display is off while connected to a power adapter. Apple cautions that not every setting is available on every Mac. Treat it as a control for automatic sleep in applicable configurations, not a universal override for closed-lid behavior. See Apple’s sleep and wake settings guide.
If the stream still stops, identify what actually interrupted it
After an interruption, reopen the laptop and check whether it slept, shut down, lost power, or lost its network connection. Do not assume OBS caused the problem simply because the stream stopped. A lid setting addresses sleep behavior only. The available platform guidance does not establish what YouTube will display after a disconnect or guarantee how it will handle reconnection.

- The laptop slept: Recheck the plugged-in lid action on Windows. On a Mac, confirm that your model and external-display arrangement meet Apple’s requirements.
- The laptop shut down or lost power: Check its power connection and power settings, then restart OBS and verify the stream.
- The laptop stayed awake but the stream stopped: Check the network connection and OBS status. The lid setting cannot fix a network or platform-side interruption.
