A YouTube dropped-frames warning does not, by itself, tell you whether the encoder or your internet connection is at fault. First check the stream preview and diagnostics in your encoder: if its output is already poor, investigate encoding, CPU load, and the local source; if it looks and sounds healthy, test the outbound connection. Then compare your stream settings with YouTube’s recommendations for the codec and resolution you are sending.
Read the warning, but do not assume it identifies the cause
In YouTube Live Control Room, read the exact Health Indicator message and note its timestamp. YouTube describes red messages as critical and yellow messages as moderate; messages can flag issues involving bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency. Treat the message as a clue to investigate, not a diagnosis of why frames are being dropped. YouTube’s stream health guidance explains the indicator and its messages.

If the warning names a specific setting, check that setting first. Avoid changing unrelated encoder options until you know what the message refers to.
Check the encoder’s local output first
- Open the encoder’s live preview or output monitor. Check the picture and sound as the stream is being sent—not just the source file or scene before encoding.
- If the preview is already poor, investigate locally. Look for encoder-reported errors and high CPU load. Check the source routing and, if you record a local archive, review it for the same video or audio problems.
- If the local output is healthy, test the connection. Check the outbound internet connection and run a connection speed test. YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if you find a connection issue.
This sequence follows YouTube Help’s troubleshooting guidance: assess the encoder output and CPU load when local quality is poor, then test the outbound connection when local output looks and sounds healthy. A speed test can help investigate the connection, but it does not establish that every part of the live path is healthy.

Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.
Verify encoder settings for your codec and resolution
Compare the configuration in your encoder with YouTube’s current recommended live encoder settings. Bitrate guidance depends on both codec and resolution, so do not apply a figure for one format to another.
| Setting | YouTube recommendation | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 frames per second, AV1 or H.265 | 12 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Use the recommendation for this codec and resolution as a reference when checking the encoder’s configured bitrate. |
| 1080p at 60 frames per second, H.264 | 17 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate | Use the H.264 value, not the AV1/H.265 value, when this is the codec you are sending. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds | Check the encoder’s keyframe or GOP interval and compare it with YouTube’s guidance. |
These are configuration recommendations, not guarantees that dropped frames will stop. YouTube’s settings table varies by codec and resolution; match the row to your actual output and the specific Health Indicator message.

Reproduce the problem under realistic conditions
Before an event, YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to what you expect to stream, then monitoring stream health while live. A static test image may not reveal a problem that appears with a more demanding scene or audio setup. Choose a quality level that is reliable for the connection available to you, and watch both the encoder output and YouTube’s health status during the test. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers pre-event testing and stream-health monitoring.
Troubleshoot by symptom
| What you observe | Where to investigate next |
|---|---|
| The encoder preview or local archive already shows poor video or audio | Check encoder errors, CPU load, and source routing. Review the local archive to see whether the fault is present before YouTube receives the stream. |
| The encoder preview looks and sounds healthy, but YouTube reports a problem | Test the outbound connection. If the test points to a connection issue, contact your ISP for further troubleshooting. |
| The warning names bitrate, codec, resolution, frame rate, or keyframe frequency | Compare that exact setting with YouTube’s recommendations for the codec and resolution being sent; correct the named mismatch before changing other settings. |
| The issue appears only during a representative test or live content | Repeat a pre-event test with similar audio and movement, monitor the Health Indicator, and select a quality level your connection can sustain reliably. |
YouTube’s guidance does not establish a universal dropped-frame counter threshold or identify a single cause from the warning alone. The encoder preview, local recording, Health Indicator details, and connection checks help narrow the fault without assuming that a hardware upgrade or a particular internet plan is the fix.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your use case is keeping a prerecorded YouTube stream running 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than an encoder-diagnostics tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
