Use Playwright to capture a GST Portal page only after an authorized account has completed the portal’s current login challenges and you have confirmed the intended page is loaded. Then call page.screenshot() for the visible viewport, add fullPage: true for the full scrollable page, or use locator.screenshot() for a specific region. The portal’s official login guidance includes CAPTCHA and, in some circumstances, OTP steps, so do not assume authentication can run unattended.
Before you start
- Use an account you are authorized to access and the official GST Portal at https://www.gst.gov.in/.
- Install and pin the Playwright version your project uses. This example uses the Playwright Test package and TypeScript imports; the portal’s page structure and selectors can change.
- Create an output directory for screenshots. If you save login state for reuse, keep it in a separate, access-controlled directory and exclude that directory from version control.
- Do not build a workflow around bypassing CAPTCHA or OTP checks. If the portal requests a challenge, the account holder should complete it through the normal flow.
Log in and confirm the intended page
The GST Portal’s official login manual directs users to the portal and describes entering a CAPTCHA. It also describes OTP authentication for certain situations, including first login and use of a new device. The portal may apply other checks, and its exact flow can change. Complete the challenges presented to the authorized account holder rather than trying to automate around them.

After login, verify a meaningful signal specific to the view you want to capture—for example, a heading or control that appears on that page. A URL containing gst.gov.in alone is not proof that the authenticated target view has loaded: it could still be a login, challenge, error, or stale page. The GST Portal does not have one universal selector that can safely stand in for every account and page, so choose a locator from the live page.
Capture the page with Playwright
This TypeScript scaffold opens a visible browser so an account holder can complete any interactive login challenge. Replace the comment and example assertion with the current portal login steps and a page-specific assertion for your target. It is an implementation outline, not a tested, selector-complete GST Portal script.

Playwright documents these screenshot forms in its screenshot guidance. A locator capture targets that element rather than the whole page. Confirm the resulting image has the content and dimensions you intended before using it downstream.

Reuse an authenticated session only when needed
For a one-time capture, avoid saving browser state unless you have a concrete need to reuse the session. Playwright’s authentication guidance explains saving state with context.storageState({ path }) and supplying it when creating a later context. Saved state can include cookies and other authentication material that may be enough to impersonate an account. Playwright says: “We strongly discourage checking them into private or public repositories.”

If you do persist it, keep the file access-controlled, add its directory to .gitignore, and remove or refresh it when it is no longer appropriate to retain. Playwright documents that persisted state can cover cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey authentication; session storage is not included in the normal persisted state and requires separate handling. Saved sessions can also expire.

Protect the screenshot
An authenticated GST page may show taxpayer or account information. Restrict access to the image and inspect it before sharing or publishing: check for visible GSTINs, names, email addresses, balances, filing details, and other confidential information. This is practical privacy guidance for screenshots of authenticated tax pages; it is not a claim that the portal provides or requires a particular redaction process.
