Set the resolution, frame rate and bitrate to match your upload connection, then inspect the ticker, loop, audio and stream health in preview before going live. Plan for the archive separately: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, so a continuous 24/7 transmission should not be treated as one indefinitely archived replay.
What you need for a 24/7 ticker stream
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An encoder workflow that can combine the looping video and ticker, then send the finished program to YouTube over RTMP or RTMPS.
- A reliable upload connection with enough sustained capacity for the selected stream settings.
- Video and ticker content you are entitled to broadcast, plus an operating plan for monitoring, recovery and archive segments.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to connect your encoder. You do not need to buy a hardware encoder for this workflow; the essential requirement is an encoder that can produce and send the program.

Set up the YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set its title, audience and privacy. If scheduling for viewers, share the watch-page URL in advance. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Copy the connection details. Copy the server URL and stream key from the stream settings into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder with the replacement. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Configure the output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate chart for the combination you intend to use.
- Build the program. In the encoder, place the ticker over the looping video and set the loop behavior. Preview the actual output, including transitions between loop cycles, to catch blank or silent gaps, clipped text and unexpected overlays.
- Start the encoder and verify YouTube preview. Wait for Live Control Room to receive the signal. Check the preview and watch page before starting the public broadcast. Confirm the stream is using the intended privacy setting and that the right stream is connected.
- Monitor after going live. Watch stream health and check the actual output on the devices your audience is likely to use. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing with representative audio and motion, previewing, and monitoring the stream.
Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate
There is no universal bitrate that is right for every stream. YouTube’s figures below are H.264 recommendations for the specified resolution and frame rate; they are ingest targets, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them. Test your actual upload connection with the same kind of movement and audio you will broadcast.

These values come from YouTube’s encoder guidance, current as accessed in 2026. The full chart varies by codec, resolution and frame rate; consult the linked chart for other combinations. Leave practical headroom above the target bitrate for normal network variation, and test at the location and time you expect to stream. A speed-test result is not a guarantee of uninterrupted upload capacity.

- Keyframes: Set a 2-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Rate control: Use CBR as recommended in YouTube’s settings guidance.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it; it encrypts the contribution connection.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check that the looping source does not introduce unwanted silence or abrupt level changes.
Make the ticker readable over a looping video
YouTube does not prescribe a ticker font size, screen position, safe-area measurement or loop duration. Treat these as production decisions and verify them in the real output rather than relying on the encoder canvas alone.
- Use strong contrast between ticker text and its background; avoid placing text over busy or rapidly changing parts of the video.
- Keep headlines concise enough to read at the speed you choose. Test both short and long items, including punctuation, numbers and names.
- Check the ticker at the actual output resolution and on a phone-sized display. Ensure it is not clipped by the edge or hidden by YouTube’s on-screen interface.
- Inspect the loop boundary. A clean transition should not create a flash, black frame, audio pop or sudden change that makes the ticker difficult to follow.
- For scheduled or long-running programming, make the information’s freshness clear. A ticker that continues to show stale headlines can mislead viewers even if the stream itself is working.
Horizontal, vertical and viewer settings
YouTube supports horizontal and vertical live formats, with vertical layout options. If your setup sends both formats using their corresponding stream keys, inspect each output: a layout that works horizontally may crop or obscure the ticker vertically. YouTube does not publish a ticker-specific safe-area measurement, so check the preview and watch page for each format. See YouTube’s live format guidance.

In Live Control Room, choose privacy, latency, DVR and auto-start or auto-stop behavior deliberately. Lower latency can make interaction more immediate, but may increase buffering; DVR allows viewers to pause and resume the live stream. Test the chosen settings against the audience experience you want. YouTube describes these controls in its live stream settings documentation.

Plan for a 24/7 transmission and its archive
A live stream that runs continuously and a single continuous replay are different things. YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That does not establish automatic archiving for an indefinite 24/7 broadcast. If archived replays matter, plan how the transmission will be ended and restarted in manageable segments under 12 hours, and verify that each segment appears as expected. The official setup guidance does not describe a seamless restart method for indefinite broadcasts.

For a scheduled event, YouTube’s preparation tips recommend setting up the encoder two hours ahead and starting it 15 minutes before the event. Those are preparation recommendations, not a 24/7 uptime guarantee. An always-on channel also needs someone or something responsible for checking output, handling a dropped connection and restarting or reconnecting when needed.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having a file available does not by itself establish the right to broadcast it. Check that you have permission for all video, music, images, clips and ticker material in the loop, including material supplied by others. A live loop still uses copyrighted content, and rights or platform restrictions can affect the broadcast. Review YouTube’s policies and use content you own or are licensed to use; do not assume that credit, a short excerpt or a non-commercial purpose automatically grants permission.

Also consider whether a channel built around repeated or minimally changed material meets YouTube’s monetization policies. A technically stable stream is not a guarantee of monetization eligibility. Make the programming useful and accurate for viewers, and check the current policies that apply to your channel before relying on revenue.
Troubleshooting common problems
