To make crisp portfolio thumbnails, capture each site at the CSS viewport size that matches your portfolio layout, set the device-pixel scale to 2, and display the resulting image at half its pixel dimensions. For example, a 1200 × 750 CSS-pixel preview captured at 2× produces a 2400 × 1500 image that can be shown at 1200 × 750.
Choose the thumbnail frame before capturing
The CSS viewport controls the site’s responsive layout; the scale factor controls how many image pixels are captured for each CSS pixel. Keep the viewport consistent across projects when your portfolio uses uniform cards. Pick width and height to match the composition you want visitors to see, rather than enlarging the viewport to get a sharper image.

Capture.page documents viewport width and height as capture parameters: Capture.page documentation. The exact dimensions are a design choice: consider the portfolio card’s aspect ratio, the site layout you want to represent, and whether a crop is appropriate.
Set the capture scale for retina output
A 2× scale captures twice as many raster pixels along each dimension without changing the chosen CSS viewport. Capture.page documents scaleFactor 2 as high resolution and 3 as ultra-high resolution. For most portfolio previews, start at 2×; use a higher value only if the display requires it and the larger files are acceptable.
#1 Best Overall
At a 1200 × 750 CSS viewport, 2× produces a 2400 × 1500 raster image. Render that image at approximately 1200 × 750 CSS pixels in the portfolio so the extra pixels provide density rather than changing the layout. Playwright describes the distinction between CSS-pixel and device-pixel screenshot scaling in its screenshot documentation.
Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
Viewport capture for consistent project cards
Use the visible viewport when each portfolio entry should have the same frame. This is usually the simplest way to produce consistent cards and avoids extremely tall files.
Element capture for a specific component
If the portfolio should show a particular hero, product panel, or other region, capture the target element rather than the whole viewport. Playwright supports screenshots of a target element as well as viewport and full-page screenshots; see its screenshot documentation.

Full-page capture when the whole page matters
Use full-page mode when the complete page is more informative than a uniform card. It can create very tall images. The capture-website project documentation warns that screenshots taller than 16384 pixels may repeat content because of a Chromium limitation. Capture important sections separately or limit the captured region if you encounter this.
Repeatable do-it-yourself workflow
- Set the card dimensions. Decide the CSS width and height the portfolio will use, including the desired crop or aspect ratio.
- Keep the viewport fixed. Apply the same viewport dimensions to each project when consistent responsive layouts are the goal.
- Set device scale to 2. This creates a high-density image while preserving the viewport’s responsive layout. Test 3× only when needed; larger raster dimensions increase the amount of image data to handle.
- Select the capture region. Choose viewport or a target element for a card; use full-page mode only when page length is part of the preview’s purpose.
- Wait for the page to be ready. If content loads lazily, scroll through the page before capturing or use a tool’s lazy-content preload option. The capture-website documentation describes scrolling to trigger lazy-loaded content.
- Choose an output format. capture-website documents PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Pick according to your site’s image pipeline and visual needs, then check the saved file at its actual display size.
- Review the result in the portfolio layout. Check framing, visible text and interface details, and consistency with neighboring thumbnails.
Tool options for a repeatable process
| Approach | Useful for | Documented capabilities |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo | Taking screenshots through an API or MCP server without managing browser setup. | One GET request returns an image or PDF; it offers viewport and device presets, full-page capture, element capture, and other capture options. See ScreenshotNeo and its API documentation. |
| Playwright | Projects already using browser automation or needing local control of capture steps. | Documents viewport, target-element, and full-page screenshots, including CSS-pixel and device-pixel scaling. Playwright screenshot documentation. |
| capture-website | Node.js workflows that need configurable captures from a URL or local input. | Documents width, height, output type, scaleFactor, device emulation, fullPage, and lazy-content preload options; its documented scaleFactor default is 2. Project documentation. |
| Capture.page | Hosted captures when you prefer not to manage browser automation. | Documents viewport dimensions, scaleFactor, and full-page capture. Commercial terms and service reliability are not established here. Documentation. |
These approaches represent different trade-offs: local browser control versus hosted convenience, automation integration versus one-off capture, and small framed output versus a full-page image. The right choice depends on your portfolio volume and deployment setup.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; these steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents using Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client can use its screenshot tools.
For a 1200 × 750 preview, set the viewport and scale in the request as described in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Basic one-call request:

The image looks no sharper than a standard screenshot
Check that the capture scale is set above 1 and that the portfolio displays the image at half its raster width and height. Confirm the image has not been resized downward earlier in your processing pipeline.
The page layout changes between projects
Use a consistent CSS viewport. Scale affects output pixel density, not the responsive breakpoint; changing viewport width can move a site into a different layout.

Lazy-loaded images or content are missing
Wait for the page to load and trigger lazy loading before capture. For long pages, scroll through the content or use the capture tool’s documented preload option when available.

Very tall captures can hit the Chromium limitation documented by capture-website: above 16384 pixels, content may repeat. Use viewport capture, limit the region, or capture sections separately.
Files are larger than the portfolio needs
Use the lowest scale that looks sharp at the intended display size, and select among PNG, JPEG, and WebP according to the visual content and delivery requirements. Higher scale factors create larger raster dimensions; review the final image and loading impact in your actual layout.
Frequently asked questions
Does 2× mean the site is rendered at twice the CSS viewport width?
No. It keeps the CSS viewport and responsive layout while producing twice as many output pixels along each dimension.
Should every portfolio thumbnail be full-page?
No. A viewport or element capture is usually a better fit for uniform project cards; choose full-page when the entire page is what the preview needs to communicate.
