To find the cause in your setup, capture the YouTube stream-health message and OBS log, check upload capacity and encoder load, then compare otherwise identical runs with Replay Buffer off and on.
Does OBS Replay Buffer cause dropped frames or disconnects?
The official OBS documentation reviewed here does not identify Replay Buffer as a cause of stream connection loss. Replay Buffer is an Output/recording feature; OBS Advanced Output also allows streaming and recording to be configured independently. That does not prove the buffer cannot affect a particular computer, but a disconnect happening while it is enabled is correlation, not proof of cause. OBS Studio overview

OBS says dropped frames indicate that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Its troubleshooting guide warns: “If you drop too many frames, you may be disconnected from the streaming server.” OBS connection troubleshooting The first task is therefore to determine whether the interruption is primarily a network/ingest problem, an encoder or system-load problem, or a repeatable difference associated with Replay Buffer.

Capture evidence before changing settings
Make a note of the exact time of each interruption and the message shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Its stream-health display provides specific status and error guidance; use that message rather than inferring a cause from the Replay Buffer toggle. Save an OBS log covering the interruption and note the dropped-frame counter. YouTube stream metrics

- Record whether OBS reports dropped frames, encoder errors, or another warning, and when it appears.
- Check whether the local recording/archive continues to grow through the live interruption and whether its picture and sound look normal. YouTube recommends checking the archive when diagnosing stream quality. YouTube live stream troubleshooting
- Note CPU load and any changes in scenes, recording, browser sources, or other workloads at the same time.
- Keep the log and health message together: either one alone may not distinguish a local encoding issue from a broken route to YouTube.
Check upload capacity against the stream bitrate
Test upload speed, not just download speed. YouTube recommends having upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate to leave headroom; other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to OBS. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee that a line will remain stable. YouTube streaming tips
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 bitrates: 1080p at 60 fps, 17 Mbps; 1080p at 30 fps, 10 Mbps; and 720p at 60 fps, 8 Mbps. These are YouTube recommendations, not measurements of your connection, and the appropriate bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The guidance page accessed on 2026-10-03 lists CBR and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency, with a warning not to exceed four seconds; check the current page for changes. For example, a 17 Mbps video stream needs at least 20.4 Mbps of upload capacity to meet YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation before accounting for instability or competing traffic. If measured upload fluctuates near or below the stream bitrate plus headroom, lower the video bitrate and test again. Choose a quality that remains reliable on the actual connection, rather than setting bitrate solely to match the source file.

Make one change at a time and observe the same signals: YouTube’s health message, OBS dropped frames and log, CPU/encoder errors, and local recording. OBS recommends trying a different ingest server, reducing video bitrate, and testing another service to help identify whether the destination is involved. A wired connection is generally preferable for stability. OBS connection troubleshooting

Check the whole network path: VPNs, security software, network-prioritization utilities, outdated network drivers, Wi-Fi, modem/router, network card, switches, extenders, and cables can contribute to connection trouble. If a diagnostic test points to security software interference, re-enable protection after the test and add an OBS exception as appropriate; do not leave security disabled.
YouTube’s troubleshooting steps include updating the encoder, checking stream health and CPU load, inspecting a local archive, and testing outbound connectivity. Test whether the Replay Buffer setting tracks with the failure
A controlled comparison can show whether this particular setup behaves differently with Replay Buffer enabled. It is a troubleshooting inference, not an OBS- or YouTube-prescribed fix.
- Keep the scene, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, ingest server, network path, and workload the same.
- Run a comparable stream with Replay Buffer disabled. Record the OBS log, dropped-frame counter, YouTube health message, CPU/encoder warnings, and whether the local archive continues.
- Repeat under the same conditions with Replay Buffer enabled, recording the same evidence.
- If the outcome differs, repeat the comparison before drawing conclusions. Inspect the selected OBS Output mode and logs for encoding or resource warnings; the difference is evidence about this setup, not proof of a general Replay Buffer defect.
If both runs disconnect similarly and OBS reports dropped frames, prioritize upload stability, bitrate headroom, and the route to the ingest server. If the stream disconnects without corresponding connection symptoms but the log shows encoder errors or the local archive is also impaired, investigate local encoding and system load. These signals guide diagnosis; no single one guarantees a cause.
