OBS is usually easier for setting up a simple prerecorded playlist: its VLC video source offers visible playlist, loop, and shuffle controls. FFmpeg is a better fit if you are comfortable with command-line settings and want a scriptable workflow. Neither tool schedules the YouTube event itself—that happens in YouTube Studio.
“Schedule” can mean two different things here: choosing the order and repeat behavior of your videos, or setting the date and time when a YouTube live event starts. Those jobs use different controls.

What “schedule” means for a 24/7 stream
An encoder sends audio and video to YouTube. YouTube Studio handles the live event: its title, privacy, date and time, and promotion. You configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key for the event. YouTube describes creating a scheduled stream in Studio and connecting an encoder this way: Create a live stream with an encoder.
For a repeating rotation of local prerecorded videos, the encoder or playback setup determines which file plays next and whether the rotation loops or shuffles. That is separate from scheduling an event to begin at a particular time.

This ease-of-use distinction follows from the documented controls and workflows, not from a hands-on comparison or reliability benchmark.
Set up a playlist rotation in OBS
- Install OBS and VLC. OBS’s VLC video source depends on VLC being installed; the source may not be available without it. See the OBS media sources guide.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC video source and load the local media files you want to rotate. Check their order in the source’s playlist controls.
- Choose the repeat behavior. Enable loop to repeat the playlist, or shuffle if you want playback order randomized. Review the result before going live so it matches your intended rotation.
- Schedule the event in YouTube Studio. Create the live stream, set its title, privacy, and start date and time, and copy the stream URL and key shown for the event. YouTube’s current Studio steps and available settings are described in its encoder streaming guide.
- Connect OBS and start the feed. Enter the event’s ingest details in OBS, confirm the preview and audio, then start streaming in time for the scheduled event. Follow the ingest protocol and settings YouTube shows for that stream; do not assume every protocol or encoder mode is interchangeable.
Build a looping input with FFmpeg
FFmpeg suits people who already understand command-line media workflows. Its documentation describes -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping and -re for reading at native frame rate, equivalent to -readrate 1. These are input options, not a complete tested 24/7 scheduler or an assurance that a stream will recover from failures. - Prepare and verify the media. Confirm that your input files play correctly and that your workflow accounts for their formats, audio, and the stream settings required by YouTube.
- Configure the input loop and pacing. Apply
-stream_loop -1to the input you want repeated. Use-re(or the documented equivalent-readrate 1) to pace file input at real-time speed where appropriate. - Configure the output for the scheduled event. Set the necessary video and audio encoding and YouTube ingest details for the event. Check YouTube Studio’s instructions for the stream’s current ingest settings rather than relying on an assumed universal protocol or configuration.
- Start and supervise the process. Confirm that the feed reaches YouTube, then plan how the host, network, FFmpeg process, and any restart or recovery handling will be maintained for the intended run.
The options above describe building blocks; they are not a ready-made command for every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube event. A complete command depends on the media and output configuration.

With either local setup, the computer or host must stay available, the network must continue working, and the playback and encoder processes must keep running. A power interruption, lost connection, process exit, or input problem can interrupt the feed. Plan monitoring and recovery around your own host; the cited feature documentation does not establish that OBS or FFmpeg guarantees uninterrupted streaming.

YouTube documents multiple ingest approaches. Its HLS ingest guidance lists OBS among compatible encoders and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Use the protocol and settings indicated for your scheduled stream rather than treating encoder compatibility as proof that every mode is interchangeable.
Long-stream archives and YouTube rules
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” This does not promise that a stream lasting 12 hours or more will be archived as one video. If a single archive matters, keep the stream under that threshold and check YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive for a longer broadcast. See Create a live stream with an encoder.
