Deleting a file from an SSD is not the same as securely erasing its data. The operating system can mark the file’s space as available, while the SSD controller manages physical flash behind the addresses the computer can see. That can leave the physical state different from the host’s view—but it does not mean every SSD keeps a readable copy or that deleted files can generally be recovered.
What “hiding” means on an SSD
“Hiding” is a metaphor for the difference between the computer’s logical view of storage and the flash chips inside the drive. The operating system works with logical addresses; the SSD controller maps those addresses to physical flash and handles internal operations such as wear management and garbage collection.

The NVM Express Base Specification Revision 2.1 notes that a drive can contain more physical storage than is addressable through its interface, including capacity reserved for overprovisioning. The host therefore does not have a direct, complete map of every physical location. A file operation at the operating-system level cannot, by itself, show that every physical location that once held the file has been erased. NVM Express Base Specification Revision 2.1

What happens when you delete a file
- The file system removes its reference. A typical deletion makes the file’s blocks available for reuse; it is not, on its own, a verified sanitization procedure.
- The storage stack may notify the drive. If the operating system and storage stack support and issue TRIM or an equivalent deallocation notification, the SSD learns that some logical blocks are no longer needed. The exact behavior depends on the system and drive.
- The controller manages the flash internally. Garbage collection and wear management operate behind the host-visible addresses. The physical state may therefore differ from what the computer reports as free space.
TRIM is not proof that NAND was instantly erased. Nor is there one reliable rule that says a deleted file remains recoverable—or becomes unrecoverable—on every SSD. A 2011 forensic study describes how TRIM, garbage collection, wear leveling, overprovisioning, and controller differences can affect deleted-data behavior. It is useful for understanding those dependencies, not for estimating recovery odds on current drives. 2011 DFRWS study on flash-drive data recovery

Can deleted files be recovered from an SSD?
Sometimes recovery may be possible, but it cannot be predicted from the fact that the drive is an SSD or that a file was deleted. The outcome can depend on the model and firmware, what deallocation notifications were issued, time and later drive activity, and the surrounding storage stack. The available evidence does not support a general recovery percentage or a promise that a forensic lab—or a particular consumer tool—can retrieve a file.
If an accidental deletion matters, stop writing to the drive: new activity can change the state of storage that might otherwise be recoverable. If the files are important, consult a reputable data-recovery professional rather than assuming a tool will work.

Does TRIM securely erase deleted files?
No. TRIM or an equivalent notification tells a drive that specified logical blocks are no longer needed; it is not, by itself, a verified sanitization procedure. File deletion and deallocation are ordinary storage-management operations. Sanitization has a stricter goal.

That definition comes from NIST Special Publication 800-88 Revision 2. It makes clear why “the operating system says the space is free” and “the data has been securely sanitized” are different claims. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to sanitize an SSD before selling or disposing of it
For a drive that held sensitive information, use a method appropriate to the device and the data—not ordinary file deletion or a command chosen without checking compatibility. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2, published in September 2025, supersedes Revision 1 and emphasizes a sanitization program, current standards, and validation. Consult that guidance alongside the drive manufacturer’s current instructions.

- Identify the device and connection. Confirm the drive model and interface so you can find instructions that apply to that hardware and its firmware.
- Choose a device-appropriate method. Use current manufacturer guidance and NIST’s current sanitization guidance to select a method suited to the drive and the sensitivity of the information. Do not assume one command works for every SSD.
- Follow the procedure and check its result. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the selected method, then apply an appropriate validation process. A successful-looking routine file operation is not validation of sanitization.
- Escalate when the risk warrants it. If the data is highly sensitive or you cannot establish that the device was adequately sanitized, seek qualified media-sanitization or electronics-destruction help rather than relying on an unverified consumer tool.
The choice should account for device and interface compatibility, whether the method covers the intended media and data, confidence in implementation and validation, and the sensitivity of the information. NIST Revision 1 (2014) warned that flash spare cells and implementation variability could matter, and treated ATA Secure Erase as only a Clear mechanism for flash under that revision’s guidance. That warning is historical, not standalone current instructions: Revision 2 superseded it in September 2025. NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 1 (2014), superseded NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2
