WhatsApp is reportedly testing 2x playback for video Status updates on Android. According to WABetaInfo, eligible users can press and hold the right side of a Status screen to speed up a video while their finger remains there. The feature is rolling out gradually to some beta testers; the report does not give a date for general availability.

Who can use the feature?
WABetaInfo says the feature is appearing for some testers using WhatsApp beta for Android build 2.26.40.4, with more expected to receive it over the coming weeks. That does not mean every beta tester has access. The report does not establish availability in the stable Android app, a country-by-country rollout, or a general-release date.
If the gesture does nothing, your account may not yet be included in the staged rollout. Check that you are testing on Android and note your app’s beta or stable channel and build number; the cited report does not provide another setting to enable.

How this differs from WhatsApp voice-message speed controls
WhatsApp’s 2x Status feature concerns video playback and uses a press-and-hold gesture. WhatsApp separately announced 1.5x and 2x playback controls for voice messages in 2022. Those controls are for voice notes, not Status videos, and do not confirm that the Status feature is available.
Meta’s 2023 description says Status updates disappear after 24 hours and can include photos, videos, GIFs, text, and more. That announcement describes Status generally; it does not confirm the reported 2x playback test.
