A peer-reviewed case study on one farm in southern Ecuador found that some coffee plants grown from seed batches sold as Sidra or Gesha did not match the expected identity when assessed using molecular markers and visible traits. The result raises a practical concern for growers, but it does not show how often seed identities are wrong across Ecuador or the wider coffee industry.
What the Ecuador study found
The study, “What you plant may not be what you bought: morphological and genetic discordance in specialty Coffea arabica L. cultivars from Ecuador,” was published in Frontiers in Plant Science on 8 August 2026. Researchers examined four morphotypes from plants grown from seed batches purchased as Sidra and Gesha.

According to a Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL)-attributed release summarizing the paper, two of the four morphotypes matched the variety declared at purchase. One morphotype from the Sidra batch had a genetic profile consistent with Batian, a Kenyan variety outside the Ethiopian landrace group associated with Sidra.
The plants from the batch sold as Gesha belonged to an Ethiopian landrace group, but were not identical to the CATIE reference accession Geisha T.02722. That distinction matters: the finding does not establish that the plants were simply “not Gesha.” It reports a group-level relationship and a difference from one specific reference accession.

How researchers assessed plant identity
Molecular markers
The team used genetic analysis with molecular markers to compare the plants’ profiles. The release does not specify a grower-facing test protocol or provide comparative accuracy figures for this method.
Visible plant traits
Researchers also examined morphology: visible characteristics including plant architecture and the shapes of leaves, branches, and fruit. Internode length—the spacing between points where leaves or branches grow from a stem—was among the traits the release says helped distinguish varieties. Morphology supplied another line of evidence alongside the genetic analysis; the release does not establish that visual inspection alone is a validated identification method.

Why the finding matters to growers
In this case, the planting material lacked genetic or phytosanitary certification. The plants had grown for about three years before field differences prompted identity checks. The UTPL-attributed release says coffee plants can take three to four years to reach significant production, so a mismatch may become apparent only after a grower has spent years establishing and managing a planting.

Does this show that coffee seed mislabeling is widespread?
No. This was a single-farm case involving a limited number of plants, and the study does not estimate how prevalent discrepancies are in Ecuador or elsewhere. The release states: “The study does not allow us to determine how common this type of discrepancy is in Ecuador, as it was carried out on a single farm with a limited number of plants. Nevertheless, this case highlights the need for identification tools and certification systems that are accessible to producers.”
The researchers’ proposed next step is to examine more plants and farms and build stronger genetic and morphological references. Until broader evidence is available, the result is best understood as a documented example of identity discordance—not a rate of mislabeling for the coffee trade.

What a grower can take from the case
- Keep purchase and lot records that identify what variety was declared and where the planting material came from.
- Note visible differences as plants develop, but do not treat appearance alone as definitive proof of cultivar identity.
- Ask suppliers what genetic or phytosanitary documentation accompanies planting material; this case’s material lacked such certification.
- If identity has significant production consequences, seek qualified advice about genetic testing and the reference material needed for a meaningful comparison. The UTPL-attributed release names no service provider or validated grower protocol.
The study’s strongest conclusion is narrow but useful: commercial labels and plant identity did not align for every morphotype assessed on this farm, and checking identity only after years of growth can be consequential. It does not establish how likely the same problem is for another seed batch or seller.
