1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf WireGuard connects but you cannot reach devices on the remote home or office network, check whether the network you are currently using overlaps with the remote LAN. When both use the same or intersecting IP ranges, your device may send traffic to its local network instead of through the VPN. That is a routing conflict—not proof that the tunnel itself is broken.
Why overlapping router networks can break access
Your device decides where to send traffic by matching destination addresses to routes. A local Wi-Fi network and a remote LAN behind WireGuard need distinguishable network prefixes. If both use the same or intersecting range, a route for the local network can capture traffic intended for the remote one.

For example, seeing a familiar router address such as 192.168.1.1 at both locations is a clue, but compare the full network prefixes and masks—not just the router’s last address. A subnet such as 192.168.1.0/24 covers a different set of addresses from a narrower or broader prefix that may overlap it.
This is a plausible cause when a tunnel is active but remote LAN devices remain unreachable. It is not an explanation for every WireGuard problem, and the available documentation does not establish how often this conflict occurs.

Check the ranges before changing settings
- Write down the client’s current LAN prefix and mask. Use the network details on the device you are connecting from; the local network may change as you travel.
- Record the remote LAN prefix and mask. This is the network containing the device you want to reach, not the WireGuard tunnel’s own address range.
- Record the tunnel addresses and inspect routes. Ubuntu’s WireGuard guide demonstrates checking interface addresses, routing entries, and peer handshake status: Ubuntu WireGuard troubleshooting.
- Confirm the tunnel is active, then test a remote device by IP address. A successful handshake does not confirm that LAN routes, forwarding, or firewall rules allow access.
If the local and remote LAN prefixes are identical or intersect, the overlap is a strong candidate. If they do not overlap, continue checking the peer configuration, routes, firewall, forwarding, and—if you are using names rather than addresses—DNS.
Choose which LAN to renumber
Changing one side to a LAN prefix that does not overlap the other involved networks is a documented remedy. Choose based on your topology and which network is less disruptive to change; there is no universally correct replacement range.

- Consider how many devices, static addresses, reservations, or other network configurations would be affected on each side.
- Choose a prefix that avoids the other LANs involved, including networks the traveling client commonly uses.
- Expect the gateway address used by local devices to change. Clients may need to reconnect, and manually configured addresses or DHCP-related assumptions may need updating.
Router menus and steps differ by make and firmware. GL.iNet’s example uses a GL-AX1800 server and GL-SFT1200 client, and changes the client LAN address to 192.168.10.1. That value is specific to its example; check that any range you choose is unused in your own topology. See GL.iNet’s WireGuard server guide.
Update WireGuard peer prefixes and routes
Renumbering a LAN is only part of the repair. The WireGuard peer configuration and any routes must still describe where that LAN can be reached.

AllowedIPs has two roles: it selects a peer for outgoing traffic to matching destination prefixes, and it limits which source addresses are accepted from that peer after decryption. Ubuntu explains both functions in its WireGuard configuration guide. Make sure the intended remote LAN prefix is included on the relevant peer and that routes direct that traffic through WireGuard.
In GL.iNet’s documented example, the operator changes the client LAN address, adds 192.168.10.0/24 to the server’s WireGuard configuration and Allowed IPs, and adds a route through wg0. MikroTik’s site-to-site example likewise configures peer allowed-address prefixes alongside interface addresses, routes, and firewall rules. These are vendor- and topology-specific examples, not universal settings; see MikroTik’s WireGuard manual.

Decide whether the client needs split or full tunneling
Subnet-conflict repair does not require every client to send all internet traffic through the VPN. The choice depends on which destinations you intend to reach.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Configuration | What it routes | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Split tunnel | Only the VPN and specified remote LAN prefixes are sent through the peer. | When you need access to particular remote networks while other traffic uses the client’s usual connection. |
| Full tunnel | A client prefix such as 0.0.0.0/0 routes all IPv4 destinations through the peer, making it the default gateway in Ubuntu’s documented configuration. |
When you intend all IPv4 traffic to go through that peer. This is a broader routing choice, not a required fix for overlapping LANs. |
For IPv6, configuration may also include ::/0; do not assume an IPv4 route covers it. MikroTik says its generated client configuration uses 0.0.0.0/0, ::/0 by default, and that client-allowed-address can adjust this starting with RouterOS 7.21. Its guide says that on older versions, the generated value is fixed and can only be changed on the remote peer. Check the manual for the RouterOS version you run rather than applying that behavior to other vendors.

Check firewall and forwarding rules
Even with distinct prefixes and correct routes, firewall policy can prevent the tunnel or LAN traffic from working. Router-to-router access may require forwarding rules and routes on both sides. MikroTik documents that its default firewall can block WireGuard tunnel establishment unless the WireGuard UDP port is accepted, and that access to router services needs an appropriate input rule or interface-list policy. Those details apply to the documented MikroTik setup, not automatically to every router.
After changes, reconnect clients if needed and test the remote destination by IP address. If it remains unreachable, verify the current routes, peer AllowedIPs, firewall policy, and forwarding on the path; an overlap may have been only one of several issues.
