The last two received zero views, and one thoughtful comment sat unanswered for eighteen days. Those figures describe one writer’s first nineteen days on the platform—not a formula for growth—but they make a useful retrospective about what the numbers show, what they cannot explain, and the people behind them.
What happened in the first seven posts
Kim says they joined DEV on September 9, 2026, and published seven posts over the next nineteen days. The counts below are the author’s figures, attributed to API access and personal logs; they have not been independently audited.

| Date | Post topic | Views | Reactions | Comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September 10 | What a static calculator site loads (16 requests) | 32 | 1 | 1 |
| September 12 | A product data pipeline that refuses Amazon as a source | 3 | 0 | 2 |
| September 14 | How a Shopify app’s rules run inside checkout | 18 | 1 | 0 |
| September 16 | Rounding in a flooring calculator | 17 | 1 | 0 |
| September 19 | A browser extension’s 15-second timer in Manifest V3 | 4 | 0 | 0 |
| September 25 | A comparison operator that returns true on empty input | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| September 28 | Five upgrade banners nobody will ever see | 0 | 0 | 0 |
The first post led with a concrete site detail and accounted for 32 of the 74 reported views. The next three posts also received views, while the final two registered none. That uneven pattern is worth noticing, but seven posts are not enough to say what caused it.

Zero views do not explain whether the problem was reach or clicks
A zero in a view column says that no views were recorded for a post in the reported data. It does not reveal whether potential readers saw the post and passed over it, or whether it was surfaced to few people in the first place. Kim reports checking the public tag feeds through the DEV API and finding both posts listed. That is the author’s described check, not an independently reproduced result, and appearing in a tag feed does not establish how many readers were shown a post.

Kim’s interpretation is that titles naming unfamiliar tools and the lack of a cover image may have made the posts resemble changelog entries in a crowded feed. That is a plausible reading, not something the counts prove. Without impression data or a controlled comparison, the dashboard cannot separate visibility from click-through.
The posting-time theory remains unresolved
Six posts went out at 8 a.m. US Eastern, according to Kim; the first and best-performing post went out around 2 a.m. Eastern. That contrast gives the author reason not to blame the zeroes simply on posting time. It does not establish that timing makes no difference: the sample is small, and the posts also differ in subject and other details.

Kim also reports analyzing public tag feeds on September 30. For September 23–28, the author counted more than 200 #showdev posts, found a median of zero reactions, and said 3 percent reached five reactions. The author also reports roughly 200 #beginners posts and 170 #javascript posts, with the same zero median. These are the author’s analysis of those feeds; the underlying dataset is not included, so treat them as a snapshot rather than a DEV-wide benchmark.
A thoughtful comment went unanswered for eighteen days
There were three comments across the seven posts, Kim says, two of them link spam. The remaining comment, on the September 12 post, praised a distinction in the product-data pipeline: one source confirms that a product model matches, while another supplies the number. Kim did not respond for eighteen days.

That delay gives the retrospective its sharper point. The view and reaction totals are abstract, but an unanswered comment is a specific missed exchange with a reader who had engaged with the substance of the work. It does not explain the reach figures; it shows that publishing is only one part of participating in a community.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The follow-up changes too many things to identify a cause
For a follow-up, Kim changed the framing to first person, used #discuss instead of #showdev, and shortened the title. The author describes the limitation plainly: “That’s three changes at once, which is bad science, I know.” Posting time and the absence of a cover image were held constant, according to Kim, but any difference in the outcome still could not be attributed to one specific change.

The tag choice has a practical context. DEV’s Dev Journal tag guidance describes the tag as a place for public journaling about what someone tried, accomplished, learned, or plans to do. It says posts primarily promoting a project and most discussion prompts do not fit, and points writers toward #discuss for most discussion prompts. That guidance helps explain Kim’s switch; it does not show that one tag gets better reach than another.
A commenter, Willow, offered a personal hunch based on two of their own posts: a person-centered title received views while a topic-centered one did not. Willow also cautioned that two posts are not evidence. It is a useful reader anecdote, not confirmation of Kim’s hypothesis.
Quick Recap
What this small retrospective can—and cannot—tell a new DEV writer
- It can document one beginning. Kim reports seven posts, 74 views, three reactions, and an eighteen-day delay in answering the one substantive comment.
- It can suggest questions to test. A person-centered title, tag choice, posting time, and cover image are all possibilities Kim raises, but this account does not isolate their effects.
- It cannot establish a growth playbook. There are no impression counts, controlled comparisons, or independently verifiable underlying dataset for the reported tag-feed analysis.
- It can prompt a conversation. Kim asks whether other writers’ first months looked similar and what actually moved their results; whether #showdev works for someone without an audience or is a tag to grow into; and whether cover images make a real difference in the feed or are folklore. The account leaves those questions open.
