If your Android phone’s hotspot works but connecting another device still takes too many steps, check Cross-device services. Google’s Instant Hotspot feature can make a supported device-to-device connection easier, but it is not a guarantee that every Android phone and computer will connect automatically or behave exactly like an iPhone.
What the hidden setting does
Google groups Instant Hotspot under Android’s Cross-device services. With the service enabled on both devices, a supported receiving device can use the phone’s internet without relying only on the usual manual hotspot routine. Google also calls the connection route Instant Tethering in Pixel Help.

This is a convenience feature, not a universal Android capability. Device support, Android version, account setup, and menu wording can vary. Google’s Android instructions explain the Cross-device services requirement, while Pixel’s Instant Tethering guidance describes its settings route.

Turn on Cross-device services
- On each participating device, open Google settings and go to All services → Devices & sharing → Cross-device services.
- Turn on Use cross-device services on both devices. Menu names and placement can differ by manufacturer and Android version; Google’s setup guide gives the documented path.
- Make sure the devices share at least one Google Account. Google’s cross-device overview says cross-device services work across devices with a common Google Account.
- On the receiving device, follow the Instant Hotspot prompt or open its internet connection options and choose the phone. On Pixel, Google also documents a later route through Google settings and Instant Tethering in its Pixel Help instructions.
To share internet with a Chromebook, use it as the receiving device and look for the phone’s available connection or the Instant Hotspot prompt. Availability still depends on the Chromebook and phone supporting the feature; the setup does not make every device pairing compatible.

Instant Hotspot or a regular Wi-Fi hotspot?

Google also documents USB and Bluetooth tethering as alternatives in its tethering guidance. These are different connection methods, not substitutes for the same automatic Wi-Fi experience. A carrier may restrict or charge for tethering, so check your plan with your provider as Google advises in its hotspot overview.

If the setting or connection prompt is missing
- Check both devices: Cross-device services needs to be enabled on each participating device, not just the phone.
- Check the Google Account: Confirm that both devices share at least one account, as described in Google’s cross-device overview.
- Check software and compatibility: Android instructions and feature support vary by device and version. Google notes that some related tethering instructions apply only to Android 14 and later; consult its Android help page and Pixel-specific instructions for your setup.
- Use the regular hotspot as a fallback: If the instant option is unavailable, connect through Wi-Fi hotspot, USB, or Bluetooth tethering where supported. Check carrier terms before relying on mobile tethering.
