You can download a copy of your ChatGPT data from Settings → Data controls → Export data, or request it through OpenAI’s Privacy Portal. The resulting ZIP is an archive for your records—not a way to restore deleted chats or recreate your chat list in another account. Download it promptly, check its contents, and store it securely.
How to export your ChatGPT history
- Use an eligible signed-in account. In ChatGPT, open your profile menu and select Settings → Data controls → Export data, then confirm the request. Alternatively, submit a data request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal and choose the option to download your data.
- Wait for the export notice. OpenAI says an export can take up to seven days. It will notify you by email or SMS when the file is ready.
- Download the ZIP promptly. Sign in to the same account that requested the export. The download link expires 24 hours after it arrives.
- Open and check the archive. Confirm that it contains the conversations you want before treating it as a usable backup. OpenAI says the ZIP includes chat history and other relevant account data.
Settings-based exports are available for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, and eligible ChatGPT Edu users. They are not available while logged out or for Business, Enterprise, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Edu access depends on the user’s role, administrator enablement, and data residency configuration. For organization-managed workspace data, contact the workspace owner. If the export does not arrive or the link expires
- Check your inbox, spam and promotions folders, and SMS for the notification.
- If you have an export request in progress, OpenAI says to wait for it to finish before requesting another. If it has not arrived after seven days, contact OpenAI Support.
- If the download link has expired, request a new export.
- If you cannot sign in, use the Privacy Portal to submit a data request.
What a ChatGPT export can—and cannot—do
The export gives you a copy of data associated with your account, including chat history. It is not a recovery mechanism: OpenAI says an export cannot restore chats that have already been deleted. If a conversation matters, save the export before losing access to the account or workspace.
An export also does not provide a full account migration. OpenAI documents a limited way to use exported conversations as reference in another personal account:

- Export your data from an eligible account and extract the ZIP.
- Find
conversations.json. Larger exports may contain numbered JSON files instead. - Upload the relevant file into a new conversation in the other personal account.
ChatGPT can then use the uploaded file as reference, but this does not restore the old chat list or recreate conversations as separate sidebar entries. It does not transfer account settings, subscriptions, memories, GPTs, files, or workspace access. See OpenAI’s account-transfer instructions.
Export before moving personal data into a managed workspace
If you plan to move or merge a personal workspace into a Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace, request, download, and check the personal-data export first. OpenAI warns that after the personal workspace is removed, an earlier export link may no longer open and you may not be able to request another export from that workspace. The export process is not available for organization-managed workspace data; ask the workspace owner about that data.

Store the downloaded archive safely
An export may contain sensitive account information, so keep the ZIP somewhere access-controlled. OpenAI does not require an external drive: a secure cloud service is another possible destination. For an offline copy, CISA recommends encrypting removable media, keeping it in a safe place, and disconnecting the drive when the backup is complete. Keep any encryption password or recovery key somewhere safe and accessible to you.
CISA’s advice is general device-security guidance, not a ChatGPT-specific backup standard. Its device-data guidance discusses secure external drives and properly vetted cloud services; its ransomware guidance recommends offline, encrypted backups and checking their availability and integrity. For your ChatGPT archive, the practical check is simple: make sure the ZIP opens and the conversations you need are present before relying on it.

Offline drive or cloud copy?

Turning off Improve the model for everyone does not delete saved chats or download a backup. OpenAI says new conversations remain in your history while not being used to train ChatGPT. The setting controls model improvement; exporting data is the separate step for keeping a copy. Read the Data Controls FAQ for the setting’s current behavior.
