No: Elliott Hill did not say Nike had “gone too woke” in the sentence attributed to him. That wording is OutKick columnist Matt Calkins’s interpretation of Hill’s reported emphasis on putting sport at the center of Nike’s business. OutKick also reported that Nike shares closed at $33.87 on October 2, 2026, a low not seen in more than 12 years; that specific price and comparison have not been confirmed here against primary market data.
What did Nike’s CEO actually say?
In an October 5, 2026, opinion article, OutKick attributed this sentence to an October 1 employee memo from Nike President and CEO Elliott Hill: “Over the past year, we’ve put sport at the center of everything we do. We’re seeing encouraging signs of progress, but we have more work to do to win over the long term.”

The sentence does not use “woke,” refer to political messaging, or express regret about a past campaign. OutKick columnist Matt Calkins interpreted Hill’s focus on sport as a possible implicit acknowledgment that Nike had lost its way. That is commentary about the quote, not a direct admission by Hill or a position Nike confirmed. The original employee memo was not available in the sources reviewed, so the wording should be attributed to OutKick’s report of it. Read OutKick’s article.

What does Nike’s official statement add?
Nike’s October 1, 2026, release on its FY2027 first quarter gives Hill’s remarks a business context. He said Nike’s “Sport Offense” was driving measurable progress in performance and that the company had introduced Pace to accelerate and scale that momentum. He also said more work was needed in NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand, and Greater China, and that Nike was taking deliberate steps to strengthen them for the long term. Nike’s FY2027 Q1 release identifies Hill as the company’s president and CEO.

Those statements support a reading that Nike is emphasizing sport and trying to improve parts of its business. They do not establish that Hill was referring to social or political campaigns, or that he was conceding a past mistake.
Did Nike stock hit a 12-year low?
OutKick reported that NIKE shares closed at $33.87 on October 2, 2026, and described the close as the lowest in more than 12 years. That is a specific historical-market claim, but it has not been independently verified against primary price-history data here. Treat it as an attributed report rather than a confirmed record.

Nike’s SEC filing identifies its Class B shares as listed on the New York Stock Exchange under ticker NKE and includes a five-year comparative return graph. The filing provides longer-term context, but it does not validate the reported October 2 price or the 12-year comparison. It also cautions that historical stock performance does not necessarily predict future performance. Nike’s FY2026 Form 10-K.

The same release described Pace as an operating-model transformation. Nike estimated approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through FY2031 and approximately $1.0 billion in pre-tax charges through FY2031. The company said these estimates depend on assumptions and actual results could differ materially. Nike’s FY2027 Q1 release.
The outlook and restructuring plans help explain why Nike is describing a business in need of work. They do not prove that political messaging caused its financial challenges or that such messaging drove the reported share-price decline. OutKick’s own article acknowledges that it would be unfair to assign the stock decline to a single campaign, before advancing its broader interpretation.
