Nintendo Switch Sports Resort has reminded me why I want family games in the living room: they give everyone a simple reason to take part, take turns and laugh at the same small contest. That is what I hope to get from it—not a claim that a game automatically brings people closer. The important qualification is that Resort is still upcoming: Nintendo lists it for Nintendo Switch 2 with a release date of October 22, 2026, so I can’t claim to have played or reviewed it.
Why this kind of game appeals to me
Family games do not need a sprawling story or a long lesson before anyone can join in. A racket, a bowling roll or a quick challenge can make the rules feel visible: see what happens, try your turn, then pass the controller. That low barrier is the appeal. It makes room for mixed skill levels and different ages without asking everyone to care about the same character, genre or score.

That is the idea Nintendo is selling with Resort. The company’s UK product description says: “Gather family and friends around the TV for a sporting island retreat in your living room, or face-off online to connect from afar.” It is inviting language, not proof that every household will enjoy the game or that playing together improves relationships. The more modest promise is enough for me: a set of familiar, physical-feeling activities built for shared play.

Nintendo describes 12 sports, played with motion controls and Joy-Con 2 controllers used as rackets, bows, handlebars and other inputs. The announced lineup is:
#1 Best Overall
- Step up and take control of how you leave your mark in the biggest, most immersive MLB The Show yet.
- NEW – Road to Cooperstown & Expanded Amateur Years Career. Your journey to greatness starts here, which path will you choose? Earn a coveted spot at the MLB Draft Combine or catch the eye of one of 11 additional new colleges as you advance through chapters of your career.
- Compete in the officially licensed Men’s NCAA College World Series as you rise from a promising high school talent to one of the all-time MLB greats – immortalized in the National Baseball Hall of Fame and maybe even a place on the first ballot.
- Build your ultimate fantasy team with a new Red Diamond rarity tier and World Baseball Classic player cards featuring elite game-changing players.
- Play revamped Mini-Seasons campaigns as you level up your stars with an upgraded PXP system, customize their skills with Parallel Mods, and hit Parallel V faster through special challenges.
- Boxing
- Table Tennis
- Archery
- Tennis
- Volleyball
- Bowling
- Basketball
- Golf
- Thumb Wrestling
- Skateboarding
- Power Cruising
- Prop Plane
Nintendo also mentions Jump Rope as a warm-up activity; it is not a thirteenth sport. The range matters because it gives a group several ways to find a comfortable first match. Someone drawn to aiming can start with Archery; others may prefer the familiar rhythm of Bowling or Tennis. Those are possibilities suggested by the lineup, not hands-on judgments about how any activity plays.
How family and multiplayer play is described
Nintendo says players can gather around the TV or play online. Its announcement also describes teaming up, challenging friends and family, or playing solo. That makes the game sound flexible for a household that wants local sessions as well as for friends who are apart—but the exact options and controller arrangements can vary by sport and mode.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
There are two practical checks before planning a group session:
- Platform: Nintendo describes Resort as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. A household with only the original Nintendo Switch cannot assume it will run there.
- Controllers and online access: Nintendo says multiplayer needs one compatible controller per player and that additional controllers may be required. Its UK listing also says online modes require a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Check the specific mode you want before assuming what setup or subscription it needs.
Nintendo’s pages do not establish a single controller count or player limit that applies to every sport. So the sensible plan is to check the mode-specific requirements rather than buy an extra controller on the assumption that every activity needs one.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
What the earlier Nintendo Switch Sports tells us—and doesn’t
The upcoming Resort is a separate Nintendo Switch 2 release, not an update to the earlier Nintendo Switch Sports. The older game’s history offers a little context about how Nintendo has expanded that series: Nintendo Support records Golf arriving in version 1.3.0 on November 28, 2022, with Shot Assist intended to make golf easier for beginners. Basketball was added in version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024, and Nintendo says it is available in Play Globally, Play Locally and Play with Friends.
That history shows the earlier game gained activities and modes after launch. It does not establish that the new Resort will follow the same update path, or that its announced sports will be equally welcoming or satisfying. Those are things players will have to judge once the new game is available.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort a good family game?
It looks like a plausible fit for families who already own a Switch 2 and want motion-controlled activities they can play together. The announced variety and local-play framing are promising on paper; the real test will be whether the controls feel approachable, the modes suit the group, and people actually want to keep taking turns. Those questions cannot be answered from an announcement alone.
My interest is less about a guaranteed bonding effect than the kind of evening the format makes possible: a few quick rounds, a little friendly competition, and an activity that does not require everyone to be a dedicated gamer. For now, that is a reason to be curious—not a verdict on a game that has not yet launched.
