The controls already on most phones and computers cover scheduling, app limits, and interruption control, and several free blockers add website and app blocking. A paid blocker is worth its cost when you can name a specific feature the free option lacks, such as recurring sessions, longer sessions, or a block that is harder to switch off.
Start with the controls already on your device
Each major operating system handles distraction differently, and none of the built-in options is a complete blocker on its own. Check what your device already does before you look for anything else.

iPhone and Mac: Screen Time
On iPhone, Screen Time can schedule Downtime, set daily app limits, and let you choose which apps and contacts stay available. Apple’s iPhone guide, Set schedules with Screen Time on iPhone, describes the scheduling controls.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThe important setting is Block at Downtime. By default, app limits can be ignored on iPhone, so an app can stay open after its limit is reached. When Block at Downtime is on, restricted apps are blocked during Downtime. Apple’s guide states it this way:
#1 Best Overall
- Easy Rotation Timing: The gravity-sensing time cube timer is simple to use and responsive. Cube timer 15-20-30-60 minute preset timer.Select the timing time, flip the timer, it will beep and flash a non-glaring red light
- Volume and Display: The block timer has two levels of sound prompts (high and low), you can choose different volume according to different occasions. The timer has a display, you can check the remaining time at any time

“When Block at Downtime is turned on, restricted apps can’t be opened during downtime—they appear dimmed with an hourglass icon.”
On Mac, Screen Time adds reports and limits for specific apps, app categories, and websites. You can set a schedule and maintain an Always Allowed list. Apple’s Mac guide is Screen Time on Mac.
How strict these controls are depends on your setup and on whether the person being limited can change the settings. A limit that a user can remove with a tap is a reminder, not a block.

Windows: Focus sessions
Windows Focus is a narrower feature. A session turns on Do Not Disturb, silencing notifications, and temporarily hides taskbar badges and flashing indicators. You can start a session from Settings, the Clock app, or the notification area, and end it early. Microsoft’s page Focus: Stay on Task Without Distractions in Windows states:
“When you start a focus session, do not disturb turns on automatically to silence your notifications.”

Free third-party blockers fill the gaps
If the built-in controls miss a website in your browser or an app you need to block, a free third-party tool may cover it. Each of the tools below publishes its own feature list, so treat them as vendor descriptions rather than independent tests.
Freedom
Freedom’s free plan can block apps, websites, or the entire internet. It supports custom blocklists, desktop app blocking, Focus Sounds, and installation on an unlimited number of listed devices, including Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Chromebook or Linux.
Recommended Free Tools
The free plan has firm limits. Sessions must be started immediately with Start Now, and they cannot run longer than two hours. Freedom’s help-center comparison, What’s included in free and premium plans, was dated February 23, 2026, so confirm the current limits on that page before you rely on them.

Digital Habits: Blocker
The publisher describes Digital Habits: Blocker as open source. It lists versions for Mac, Windows, iPhone and iPad, and Android. It says it can block websites across browsers and automatically minimize apps. The publisher also says it collects no personal data, except an anonymous daily usage count that users can turn off. These are publisher claims. No independent audit of the privacy statement was identified.
BlockDistraction
BlockDistraction offers a free browser extension with up to 10 website rules, Strict Mode, and free 25-minute Focus Sessions. Browser support differs between desktop and Android, so check compatibility with your browser before installing it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When paying is worth it
Paying makes sense when you can name a missing feature. Compare the paid tiers against the free limits above and against these paid features as listed by each vendor:
- Recurring schedules or Start Later sessions: Freedom lists these as premium, and BlockDistraction lists schedules as paid.
- Sessions longer than two hours or custom session lengths: Freedom limits free sessions to two hours; BlockDistraction lists custom session lengths as paid.
- Locked or hardened blocking: Freedom’s Locked Mode and BlockDistraction’s Hardcore Mode are paid.
- Password protection and rule profiles: BlockDistraction lists both as paid.
- Daily limits per site: BlockDistraction lists daily limits as paid.
Also check the things that cost you most when you switch. If you use several browsers or devices, a block tied to one browser can be bypassed by opening another. Confirm that a paid plan covers each device you use before you buy, and check the privacy statement for what data is collected.

Check vendor claims before you act on them
Freedom’s marketing page makes two numerical claims. It says “2.5 hours of productive time each day,” described as the average gain users report, and “10,000,000 hours in the past year” of time reclaimed. The page does not give a year for either claim, a methodology, or independent validation. Treat them as vendor claims, not evidence that a blocker will give you the same time back.
The same page gives two different user counts, which is why this article does not quote either one. I did not find an independent study establishing that paid blockers improve productivity.
A practical order of operations
- Decide whether you need to block apps, websites, or both, and at which times.
- Set the built-in control first: Screen Time on iPhone or Mac, Digital Wellbeing on Android, or a Focus session on Windows for interruptions.
- Test it during the window you care about. Open the app or website and confirm the block works.
- If the built-in control misses a website in your browser, or an app you need to block, install a free blocker and check its free limits.
- Pay only if the free plan lacks a feature from the list above that you actually need, and verify the current plan limits and device support first.
This order keeps the cost at zero until a specific gap appears, and it makes it easier to see which limit you are paying to remove.
