Dynamic noise reduction (DNR) is a label for noise reduction that changes how it processes a signal depending on what that signal contains. It is not one algorithm shared across industries. In an audio circuit, DNR can mean a filter whose bandwidth moves with the music. On a camera or television, it usually means a picture setting that reduces random noise in the image at a chosen level. In some modern audio software, the phrase describes algorithms built for noise that changes over time. The actual mechanism depends on the device or program you are using.
Why the term has no single meaning
The three main uses of “DNR” share a goal, removing unwanted noise, but they work on different kinds of signal. Audio hiss is a sound problem. Grain in a picture is a visual problem. Software denoising is a processing problem that can apply to either. Because of this, a DNR setting only makes sense once you know which device or program it belongs to.

When you see “DNR” in a manual or product listing, ask three questions: Is this audio or video? Does the device adjust itself automatically, or does it apply a fixed level that I choose? What artifact appears when the reduction is strong? The answers differ across the examples below.

Audio DNR: the LM1894 example
The clearest documented audio case is Texas Instruments’ LM1894 stereo dynamic noise reduction system. Its datasheet, revision C (revised April 2013), describes the function this way: “The dynamic noise reduction system is a low pass filter that has a variable bandwidth of 1 kHz to 30 kHz, dependent on music spectrum.”

How the LM1894 adapts
The adaptation signal is the music itself. A low-pass filter removes high-frequency content, and the cutoff moves between 1 kHz and 30 kHz depending on the music’s spectrum. When the bandwidth is reduced, the hiss becomes less audible. When the music contains enough energy to mask the noise, the system can allow more bandwidth. The result is that the filter narrows when it can get away with it and opens up when the music would otherwise reveal the noise problem less subtly.
What the LM1894 example does not establish
The LM1894 is one specific hardware implementation. It should not be used to describe every modern audio denoiser. Many current audio tools do not work by changing a low-pass cutoff at all. The bandwidth range above is also tied to the datasheet revision cited; check the manufacturer’s current documentation before relying on those figures in a design.

Picture DNR on cameras and televisions
In camera and television menus, DNR generally refers to reducing random noise in the picture. These settings are where most readers meet the term, and they are configured by level rather than by a visible algorithm name.

The same manual states that DNR is disabled when AGC is turned off. If a DNR change seems to have no effect, check the AGC setting first. These details come from one model’s manual. They describe how that camera behaves and should not be assumed for every security or surveillance camera.
Televisions
A Salora television manual describes DNR with four levels: Off, Low, Medium and High. The amount of noise reduction increases at higher levels. The manual does not describe what the processing adapts to, so this example shows the level structure, not the method. This is an image-processing feature, not the audio filtering described in the LM1894 datasheet.

Dynamic denoising in modern audio software
Modern audio software sometimes uses the phrase “dynamic denoising” for a different design goal. Auphonic’s article dated June 10, 2022 says its dynamic denoising algorithms were intended to work better with fast-changing and complex noise than its classic algorithms. It describes the classic approach as suited to slowly varying backgrounds. This is a statement about algorithm design in one product, not a description of how every software denoiser works, and it is not the same circuit as the LM1894.
Comparing the four meanings

What stronger reduction costs
Every DNR example trades some signal for less noise. The cost appears in a different form in each domain:
- Audio: narrower bandwidth limits the high-frequency content that can pass through the filter.
- Camera pictures: at the highest documented level, the EverFocus manual warns of ghost imaging.
- Television pictures: the Salora manual notes that reduction increases with level, but it does not describe an artifact.
Because the costs differ, a higher level is not automatically better. Choose the lowest setting that removes the noise that bothers you.
How to check which DNR you are dealing with
- Identify the device or program first. A TV, a camera, an audio chip and a denoising plug-in can all use the same label.
- Open the device manual and search for “DNR” or “noise reduction.” Menu labels vary by brand, so the manual’s path is more reliable than a general guess.
- Read the level names. Off, Low, Medium and High, or LOW, MIDDLE and HIGH, both indicate increasing reduction in the examples above.
- On a camera, check whether AGC is on. The EverFocus manual states that DNR is disabled when AGC is turned off.
- Compare at the lowest level that removes the noise you see. If moving objects smear or leave a faint trailing image, reduce the level.
- For audio hardware, confirm the operating principle in the datasheet. A DNR label alone does not tell you whether the circuit uses a variable low-pass filter.
Using the LM1894 as a component
The LM1894 is a specific part, and Texas Instruments’ datasheet establishes its function. This article does not confirm current retailer stock or listing availability. Before designing with the part, check the manufacturer’s current datasheet and confirm that its supply voltage, signal levels and bandwidth behavior match your circuit.
