Start with the cooler’s interior dimensions and a realistic packed capacity—not its model number: YETI says those numbers are names, not exact quart measurements.
How to choose a YETI cooler size
- List what you will pack. Include food containers, bottles, cans, and anything bulky such as fish or game meat.
- Allow space for ice. YETI recommends a 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio by volume in its trip-planning guidance. A cooler’s can-only capacity is not the number of cans to expect when packed with ice.
- Match the interior dimensions. Check the usable interior against your actual containers and the way they need to sit. YETI notes that wall thickness and insulation affect internal volume, so similarly named models need not have the same usable capacity.
- Account for transport and storage. Compare the outside dimensions with your vehicle, storage space, and route. Decide whether you want a carryable soft cooler, a compact hard cooler, or a larger chest with wheels.
- Use trip length and group size as a starting point. Adjust the size upward if you are carrying substantial food, need extra ice, or are storing fish or game meat.
YETI’s cooler catalog describes Roadie and Tundra as hard cooler families and Hopper as a soft cooler family. Its guidance positions Hopper around portability and carry comfort, while hard coolers are the more relevant format for multi-day ice holding. These are manufacturer descriptions, not results from an independent, controlled comparison.

Compare selected YETI cooler capacities and dimensions
The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications in YETI’s US cooler size and capacity guide, not independent measurements. Can-only counts assume standard 12 oz (355 mL) cans; they do not reserve space for ice. Dimensions are listed as exterior and then interior, in inches.
| Model | Can-only capacity | Ice-only capacity | Exterior dimensions (in) | Interior dimensions (in) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Roadie 15 | 22 cans | 16 lb | 16.9 × 11.2 × 14.0 | 13.6 × 7.5 × 10.6 |
| Roadie 24 | 33 cans | 26 lb | 16.6 × 14.0 × 17.4 | 10.8 × 8.1 × 13.4 |
| Roadie 32 | 50 cans | 36 lb | 21.3 × 16.1 × 18.3 | 15.7 × 8.6 × 13.5 |
| Roadie 48 | 76 cans | 54 lb | 19.8 × 20.1 × 20.6 | 14.5 × 11.4 × 15.8 |
| Roadie 60 | 98 cans | 68 lb | 23.7 × 20.1 × 20.5 | 18.5 × 11.5 × 15.8 |
| Tundra 35 | 39 cans | 29 lb | 21.1 × 15.9 × 15.4 | 13.8 × 9.4 × 10.8 |

| Hopper Flip 12 | 24 cans | 16 lb | 14.3 × 10.7 × 12.0 | 11.4 × 8.5 × 9.5 |
| Hopper Flip 18 | 30 cans | 28 lb | 17.7 × 11.5 × 12.8 | 14.6 × 8.7 × 10.0 |
The “ice-only” figure is a separate capacity specification, not a promise that a cooler can hold that amount of ice alongside its listed can count. YETI’s guide includes additional models and formats; check the model-specific listing if you are considering one not shown here.

What size fits a day trip, weekend, or longer outing?
YETI’s trip-size recommendations are useful starting points, rather than independent test results. Its examples cover both soft and hard coolers; choose the format based on what you need to carry as well as how long you will be away.
| Use case | YETI’s suggested starting points | How to refine the choice |
|---|---|---|
| One-person day trip | Roadie 15, Roadie 24, Hopper Flip 12, Hopper M12, or Daytrip 14L | Choose a soft Hopper or Daytrip format when portability matters; choose a hard Roadie if its interior shape and storage needs fit better. |
| 2–4 people, 1–2 days | Hopper Flip 18, Hopper M20, or Tundra 35 | Check whether the interior fits the food and drinks you are actually bringing, with room allocated for ice. |
| 4–6 people, 2–3 days | Tundra 65, Tundra 75, or Tundra 105, among other options | Compare outside footprint and handling as well as capacity; a larger cooler can be harder to load, move, and fit in a vehicle. |
| Three or more days, or storing fish or game meat | YETI recommends moving to a larger-capacity option | Plan extra room for ice: YETI notes frozen items require more ice. |
What packed can capacity looks like with ice
YETI’s trip article gives ice-packed can counts for three Tundra sizes using its 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio. The contrast with the can-only specifications shows why the latter should not be used as a shopping estimate for a cooler packed with ice.

- WINE-FRIENDLY PACKING - Fits (most) standard wine bottles and two-liter soda bottles on their side
- DOUBLEDUTY STRAP - Designed for hands-free hauling or comfortable grip while carrying
- LIPGRIP HANDLES - Stay out of the way and make carrying your catch easy
- BEARFOOT NON-SLIP FEET - Prevent sliding on the boat or in the backseat
- BUILT FOR THE WILD - Designed with legendary toughness to keep up wherever your adventure takes you
| Model | Can-only count in YETI’s size guide | Cans with ice in YETI’s trip guide |
|---|---|---|
| Tundra 35 | 39 | 20 |
| Tundra 45 | 54 | 26 |
| Tundra 65 | 77 | 39 |
These counts are YETI’s stated packing figures, not a universal result for every mix of cans, food, ice shape, and container. If your load includes meals or bottles, check the interior dimensions and plan the actual arrangement rather than treating a can count as a guarantee.

Roadie, Tundra, or Hopper: which format makes sense?
Choose Roadie for a compact hard cooler
Roadie is YETI’s compact hard-cooler family and includes wheeled models. It is a practical place to start for day trips or when a smaller hard cooler is easier to store and move. Check the individual model’s dimensions: family name alone does not establish whether a bottle, lunch container, or other item will fit.

Choose Tundra for larger loads and longer trips
YETI positions Tundra as a higher-capacity hard-cooler line for uses such as camps, boats, and extended trips. The size range in the table spans substantially different footprints, so consider loading and transport before choosing the largest model that appears to fit your food list.
Choose Hopper when carrying comfort matters
Hopper is YETI’s soft-cooler family. Its soft formats emphasize lighter weight and carry comfort, making them worth considering for a day out or a load you will carry by hand. YETI’s product guidance does not establish a controlled performance comparison against hard coolers, so do not infer a specific ice-retention duration from the format alone.

Why the model number is not the cooler’s quart capacity
YETI’s cooler catalog FAQ explains: “They’re names, not exact quarts.” Its explanation is that construction and insulation wall thickness vary, changing internal volume from model to model. YETI directs shoppers to the specific product’s internal dimensions, can count, and empty weight instead of assuming the number represents exact usable volume.
