The MDM—not ASM—sets device policies, configures iPads and Macs, and distributes content. The practical sequence is to plan the deployment, connect ASM to an MDM server, add and assign device records, enroll devices using the right method, configure the student experience, and maintain the fleet.
Plan the deployment before enrolling devices
Start by deciding whether students will have individual devices, use shared classroom iPads, or use a mixture of both. Also identify device ownership, who will support the rollout, the systems that supply student and class information, and the milestones by which the deployment will be judged. Apple describes education deployment as ranging from shared classroom devices to one-to-one devices across a district; its guide recommends defining the scope and involving a cross-functional team. - One-to-one: Plan for each student to use an individually assigned iPad or Mac, with appropriate user authentication and policies.
- Shared classroom iPad: Plan the shared-device configuration before students receive devices. Shared iPad has supervision and activation requirements described below.
- Mixed deployment: Decide which device groups need different enrollment, access, and support workflows, then assign them to the appropriate MDM server or policy groups.

Connect Apple School Manager to an MDM service
ASM and MDM have separate jobs. ASM links devices and institutional services; the MDM service applies settings and restrictions, installs or updates apps, and manages enrolled devices. A device must be assigned to an MDM server in ASM for that service to configure activation and enrollment settings. - Set up ASM for the institution. Confirm administrative access and the organization’s relevant purchasing and identity arrangements.
- Add the MDM server in ASM. Create the server connection for the service the school will use.
- Complete the credential exchange. Follow Apple’s and the MDM provider’s instructions to exchange the server token and any required certificates. Record who owns renewal and recovery.
- Plan account and roster integration. Apple supports SIS integration directly or through SFTP, and federated authentication with supported identity providers. Confirm compatibility with the school’s SIS, identity provider, and region before relying on an integration. See Apple’s enrollment guide and education deployment overview.
ASM’s roster, account, app, and book connections do not replace the MDM service. Maintain both sides of the setup: ASM must identify and assign the devices, while the MDM must be configured to apply the intended management.
Add device records and assign them to the MDM server
Devices bought through linked Apple purchasing channels or participating resellers and carriers may appear automatically in ASM. Eligible devices can also be added manually using Apple Configurator. Availability depends on the device and purchasing channel; follow Apple’s current eligibility instructions at Apple School Manager device management.

- Check that each expected device record appears in ASM.
- Assign each record to the MDM server that will manage that device group.
- For future purchases, consider automatic assignment if the organization uses one MDM destination and that assignment fits its workflow.
- Verify the assignment before preparing or handing out devices; assignment is what lets the MDM configure the device’s activation and enrollment settings.
Choose an enrollment method for each device group
Enrollment choice should follow ownership and use. For organization-owned iPads and Macs, Automated Device Enrollment (ADE) supports management during initial setup. Manual Device Enrollment is a separate, user-initiated path. Apple’s enrollment guide covers both and the associated options: Apple device enrollment.

Configure Automated Device Enrollment
In the MDM service, determine whether enrollment is mandatory and whether Setup Assistant should authenticate the user. Apple says an MDM can associate an authenticated user with a device, enabling user- or group-based management. Decide which setup panes students should see and which identity checks are appropriate for the school’s process; details vary by MDM provider and current OS version.

Set up Shared iPad before classroom use
Shared iPad is specifically for multiple students using a classroom iPad. Ensure the devices are supervised in ASM, then enable and configure Shared iPad through the MDM. Apple says the setting takes effect after the next activation and MDM enrollment. Removing Shared iPad requires erasing and reactivating the device, so treat the mode as a deployment decision rather than a quick classroom toggle. See Apple device enrollment.
Configure student setup, policies, and security
Use the MDM to choose device settings, restrictions, and content. For eligible enrolled devices, Setup Assistant panes can be skipped, but hiding a pane does not necessarily disable the capability it concerns. Apple notes that language, country or region, and Wi-Fi selection cannot be skipped on iPad before activation; skipped panes use default settings unless the feature is separately restricted. Configure the actual policy in the MDM rather than treating a hidden setup step as a restriction. See Apple’s enrollment guidance.

Apple’s security guidance describes capabilities that may be available with compatible MDM and enrollment, including setup authentication, minimum OS requirements, FileVault enforcement on Mac, and controls on profile removal. These are options, not a universal recommended policy. Select settings based on district requirements and confirm that the MDM and OS versions support the intended controls: Apple Platform Security.

Distribute apps, books, and classroom resources
ASM and MDM can support app and book distribution, including wireless installation and updates. Use the MDM to deploy content to the appropriate devices or users, and align app choices with curriculum, licensing, and classroom workflows. Manage iPads and MacBooks together without assuming identical workflows
The fleet-wide pattern is the same for both device types: ASM holds the device assignment, enrollment connects each device to the MDM, and the MDM applies management. Shared iPad is an iPad-specific mode. Apple documents a Mac-specific supervision detail: manual Device Enrollment enforces supervision on Macs running macOS 11 or later. Beyond these distinctions, exact settings and payload support depend on OS versions and the MDM vendor, so validate them against current platform and vendor documentation before standardizing a cross-platform policy.
Choose an MDM service by requirements, not an unsupported ranking
Apple’s deployment guidance establishes the operational needs but does not provide a current vendor comparison or pricing survey. Compare candidate services against the school’s actual requirements:
- Support for the exact iPadOS and macOS versions in use, including Automated Device Enrollment.
- Shared iPad, supervision, Setup Assistant, authentication, and profile-removal controls.
- SIS, identity-provider, and roster workflows required by the institution.
- App and book distribution, deployment scale, and reporting needs.
- Token handling, backups, restoration, security responsibilities, and support arrangements.
- Hosting model, implementation effort, pricing, and education-specific support terms.
Operate the fleet and protect the management connection
Ongoing administration includes reviewing device assignments, enrollment status, policies, and content as students change classes or leave the institution. Keep ownership of the ASM-to-MDM credentials explicit: Apple says MDM server tokens expire after one year and must be replaced, and warnings may not arrive. Track the expiration date and renewal responsibility rather than depending on a notification. See Apple device enrollment.
