Yes. Schools can manage iPads, install apps and use Classroom without requiring each student to sign in with a personal Apple Account on every device. The exception is Shared iPad: to get an individual, persistent session on a shared school iPad, students sign in with school-issued Managed Apple Accounts, and the devices must be managed and meet Apple’s technical requirements.
What “without Apple IDs” means in a school setup
Apple says there is no technical requirement to deploy school devices with an Apple ID. Its education guidance says a school can manage iPads, distribute apps and deploy Classroom without an Apple ID signed in on each device. That addresses device deployment; it does not mean every Apple service or classroom workflow works without an account.

Apple’s Overview of Managed Apple ID (March 2019) makes this distinction explicitly. The document’s statement that an Apple ID is not technically required for deployment should not be read as saying that all personalized services are account-free.

Choose between a common device setup and personalized sessions
| Approach | Student account on the iPad | Best fit | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managed iPads without student accounts signed in | No personal Apple Account is required on each device for management, app distribution or Classroom deployment. | Devices use common apps and settings, and students do not need their own saved iPad session. | Individual Apple services or learning workflows may have separate account requirements. |
| Shared iPad | Yes. Students use school-issued Managed Apple Accounts. | Multiple students share one school-owned iPad but need individual sessions, with personal work and settings associated with their accounts. | Requires an MDM solution, supervised devices and compatible hardware. |
Apple’s Shared iPad deployment guidance describes the personalized option. A Managed Apple Account is created and controlled by the school; it is not a student’s personal Apple Account. Shared iPad is therefore not an account-free mode.

What Shared iPad requires
Management and device setup
Apple requires an MDM solution and supervised iPads for Shared iPad. Supervision is an organization-level device-management state, not a student sign-in. Schools should confirm their MDM setup supports the intended configuration.
Storage and supported iPad generations
Apple specifies at least 32 GB of storage for Shared iPad. Its deployment guidance lists iPad Pro, iPad (5th generation or later), iPad Air 2 or later, and iPad mini 4 or later as supported families and generations. Check Apple’s current guidance before reusing an older fleet, since compatibility requirements may change.

Accounts and identity
Apple School Manager can create Managed Apple Accounts using existing organizational identity sources. Apple names a student information system, Google Workspace, Microsoft Entra ID and an identity provider as possible integrations, and says each Managed Apple Account must be unique. See Apple’s Managed Apple Accounts documentation for current details.

Check feature access before choosing an account mode
Managed Apple Accounts and Shared iPad do not necessarily expose the same features as personal accounts or unmanaged devices. Apple’s feature comparison identifies restrictions and notes that some services can be controlled through Control Center or an MDM solution. Review that table, along with your MDM vendor’s guidance, against the apps and services students need for class.

Apple describes Apple School Manager as a service for managing school accounts, class rosters, apps and books. Its education privacy guidance describes Managed Apple Accounts as school-created and school-controlled accounts for education services, including Shared iPad. That school control is the important distinction from personal Apple Accounts.

Plan a rollout around the classroom workflow
- Decide whether students need individual sessions. If shared devices only need common apps and settings, student accounts may not be necessary on the iPads. If students need personal work and settings to follow their sign-in, plan for Shared iPad and Managed Apple Accounts.
- Check the existing fleet. For Shared iPad, verify supervision, storage and model generation against Apple’s current requirements before deployment.
- Set up identity and device management. Confirm how the school will create unique Managed Apple Accounts and configure its MDM solution.
- Validate the needed services. Check Apple’s feature comparison and the MDM vendor’s documentation to ensure the selected mode supports the actual classroom workflow.
- Plan sign-ins and connectivity. Apple says intelligent caching can help speed sign-ins when students return to a device they used previously. Consider Wi-Fi, device assignment and storage allocation as part of the deployment plan.
