XSplit Broadcaster RTMP Settings for a YouTube 24/7 Stream From a VPS

Set up XSplit Broadcaster for a YouTube RTMPS stream from a VPS, with current H.264 bitrate examples, keyframe guidance, VPS checks and 24/7 caveats.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a YouTube stream sent from a VPS with XSplit Broadcaster, use YouTube’s current RTMPS server URL and stream key, then set XSplit to the matching resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 or 17 Mbps for 1080p60; use a two-second keyframe interval and CBR. Before treating the setup as 24/7-ready, verify that the VPS can sustain the required upload, that its Windows and graphics environment supports XSplit, and that your recording and recovery plans cover sessions longer than YouTube’s stated automatic-archive window.

Choose an XSplit output and get YouTube’s RTMPS credentials

XSplit offers two practical routes: its dedicated YouTube output or a Custom RTMP output. The dedicated output is the straightforward choice when you want XSplit to connect through its YouTube integration. Choose Custom RTMP when you need to enter the server address and stream key yourself; XSplit labels the key field “Stream Name.” Confirm in XSplit’s current interface that the selected output supports the protocol and settings you intend to use.

Use the RTMPS URL shown for your stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, rather than assuming a server address from an old guide. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the RTMP connection. Treat the stream key like a password: don’t share it, show it in screenshots, or include it in public logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update XSplit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check that the channel is eligible to live stream. YouTube says channels must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  2. Open or create the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  3. Copy the stream’s current RTMPS URL and stream key. Keep the key private.
  4. In XSplit, select the YouTube output, or configure a Custom RTMP output with the RTMPS URL and key. For Custom RTMP, enter the key in “Stream Name.”
  5. Set the encoder options to match YouTube’s current recommendations, your intended output and the VPS’s demonstrated capacity.

Set XSplit’s resolution, bitrate and keyframes

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the resolution, frame rate and codec you select; bitrate recommendations differ by codec and output mode. The H.264 figures below are YouTube’s published recommended bitrates, not a guarantee that a particular VPS or connection can sustain them.

720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of two seconds, with a maximum interval of four seconds. Set XSplit to CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where those controls are available. Select a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your codec and mode; don’t apply the H.264 numbers above to AV1 or H.265, which have different recommendations.

Higher resolution and frame rate require more sustained outbound capacity. YouTube advises testing before going live, monitoring stream health and allowing bandwidth headroom. Its network guidance recommends capacity for the primary bitrate plus any backup bitrate, with 20% headroom. On a VPS, check sustained outbound performance and stability, not just the advertised port speed. A brief speed test or a provider’s headline number does not establish that the host will maintain a continuous stream.

Check whether the VPS can run XSplit continuously

XSplit’s published desktop minimum requirements include 64-bit Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM and a GeForce- or Radeon-class graphics card supporting DirectX 10.1 or better. Its page lists a second-generation Core i5 equivalent as the minimum processor class and a second-generation Core i7 equivalent as recommended. XSplit also lists 500 kbps minimum upload for its lowest streaming settings and 5 Mbps recommended upload for HD. These are the software maker’s desktop requirements; they do not certify a particular cloud VM or establish capacity for a chosen YouTube bitrate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows: Confirm the VPS offers a supported Windows environment and that the edition and licensing are suitable for your use.
  • Graphics and encoding: Verify that the VM actually exposes compatible graphics or encoding capability. A virtual machine’s advertised CPU or GPU label alone does not prove XSplit will have the required support.
  • Network: Confirm sustained upload capacity with headroom for the selected bitrate and any backup stream.
  • Persistence and recovery: Check the provider’s policies and controls for long-running workloads, reboots and reconnects. Do not assume a VPS automatically restarts XSplit or recovers a dropped YouTube connection.

Compatibility with a specific hypervisor or VPS provider, a tested VM size, and a supported headless/server mode are not established here. In particular, do not assume XSplit can run reliably without an interactive desktop simply because a VPS runs Windows. Test the actual host and session arrangement before relying on it.

Test before scheduling a 24/7 stream

  1. Prepare the exact video, audio and output settings you intend to use, including the selected codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate.
  2. Start a private or unlisted test stream using the configured XSplit output.
  3. Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and confirm that the outgoing bitrate remains stable during representative motion and audio.
  4. Check for dropped frames, connection interruptions, audio problems and any XSplit or VPS errors. A test should be long enough to expose instability rather than only confirm that the stream can start.
  5. Test the failure path separately: establish what happens if the VPS restarts or YouTube disconnects, and verify how the stream is resumed. The reviewed official guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation or a particular reconnect behavior.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that a single stream running 24 hours or longer will be archived in full. If viewers need an on-demand copy, plan a local or separate recording and test the complete recording and retrieval workflow; do not rely on a continuous 24/7 session becoming a complete replay.

Troubleshoot common XSplit RTMP problems

  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck that the channel is eligible, that you copied the current RTMPS URL and key for the intended stream, and that the correct output is selected in XSplit. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in XSplit.
  • XSplit connects, but YouTube reports poor stream health: Compare the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current table. Then verify sustained VPS upload capacity; reduce the output mode or bitrate if the connection cannot maintain it.
  • The stream starts but drops later: Investigate sustained network stability, VPS interruptions, and what XSplit does after a disconnect. A successful short test does not prove the VPS will remain connected indefinitely; test recovery and restart behavior on the actual host.
  • XSplit will not run or encode properly on the VPS: Check the Windows environment, RAM, processor class, graphics/DirectX support and whether the VM exposes compatible encoding capabilities. XSplit’s desktop requirements are not a certification of cloud VM compatibility.
  • The live stream is missing or incomplete as a replay: Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours. YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single 24/7 session.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing XSplit and a VPS: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. Frequently Asked Questions

Does a successful XSplit connection prove a VPS is suitable for 24/7 streaming?

No. It confirms only that the stream connected at that point. Validate sustained upload, host stability and the actual restart and reconnect behavior on your chosen VPS.

Will YouTube archive an XSplit stream that runs longer than 12 hours?

YouTube’s stated automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours; it does not promise a complete archive of one longer continuous stream.
