XRP vs Stellar (XLM): Fees, Speed, and Real-World Use Cases

Quick answer: XRP and Stellar (XLM) can both settle on-ledger transfers in roughly five seconds, and each network advertises a very small protocol fee. XRP is designed primarily for bridge liquidity, cross-border settlement and institutional financial flows. Stellar emphasizes accessible payments, remittances, regulated-asset issuance and applications built with Soroban smart contracts. Neither is universally “faster” or “cheaper”: the right choice depends on the transaction type, reserve requirements, liquidity path and the exchange, custody and fiat-rail services around the ledger.

As of figures verified on October 19, 2026, an ordinary XRPL transaction has a minimum network cost of 10 drops (0.00001 XRP). Stellar’s base operation fee is 0.00001 XLM (100 stroops). Those are protocol units of different assets, not directly comparable cash prices. Market prices, transaction complexity, congestion and off-ledger providers determine what a user actually pays.

What are XRP and XLM?

XRP is the XRP Ledger’s native asset

XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The ledger uses XRP for transaction fees, and its decentralized exchange can use XRP as a bridge between other currencies. In a cross-border flow, a payment provider can source XRP liquidity when needed instead of maintaining pre-funded balances in every correspondent account. Ripple describes this as on-demand bridge liquidity.

XRPL also supports issued assets and trading through its built-in decentralized exchange. Ripple’s stated solution areas include payments, custody, stablecoins, tokenization, storage, exchange and movement of value. That positioning makes XRP/XRPL particularly relevant to payment companies, financial institutions and developers integrating market liquidity.

XLM (the lumen) is Stellar’s native asset

Stellar’s native asset is XLM, commonly called the lumen. Stellar was designed to move value across currencies and markets at a low base fee. Its path-payment feature can debit one asset while the recipient receives another, using available order-book liquidity along the route.

Stellar’s platform is also aimed at regulated financial products and broad-access applications. Banks, investment firms, fintech companies and governments can issue assets such as stablecoins and other representations of real-world assets. Soroban, Stellar’s smart-contract platform, runs as part of the Stellar network rather than as a separate chain.

Are XRP and Stellar cheaper? The fee comparison

XRPL’s standard transaction fee

XRPL technical documentation states: “The current minimum transaction cost required by the network for a standard transaction is 10 drops.” One drop is one-millionth of an XRP, so 10 drops equals 0.00001 XRP. The fee is destroyed (burned), which makes sending large numbers of spam transactions expensive for an attacker.

Ten drops is a minimum, not a promise that every transaction will always cost exactly that amount. The network can raise the required fee when demand is high. Transaction types that consume more ledger resources can have different requirements. XRPL accounts also have reserve requirements, meaning capital can be tied up even when the per-transaction fee is tiny.

Stellar’s base operation fee

Stellar’s FAQ gives the current base operation fee as “0.00001 XLM,” or 100 stroops per operation. A transaction containing several operations can therefore incur several base fees. During periods when demand exceeds the ledger’s available capacity, surge pricing can increase the inclusion fee.

Stellar fees do not go to the Stellar Development Foundation or directly to validators. The developer FAQ says they go into a fee pool tracked in the ledger header. Soroban transactions add resource fees based on contract execution and storage use, so a smart-contract call should not be budgeted like a simple payment.

Why 10 drops and 0.00001 XLM are not an apples-to-apples price test

Both minimums happen to be 0.00001 units of their respective tokens, but XRP and XLM have different market prices and liquidity. A meaningful comparison needs the contemporaneous token price, the exact transaction or operation type, network demand, reserve or minimum-balance requirements, and any application-level charges.

For example, a simple wallet transfer may pay only the protocol fee, while a payment provider may also charge a spread for converting currencies, a custody fee, an exchange withdrawal fee or a local payout fee. A Soroban application may add execution and storage charges. Conversely, an XRPL payment that uses a decentralized-exchange path can incur trading spreads even when its ledger fee remains at the minimum.

Which is faster, XRP or XLM?

Ledger settlement estimates

Official descriptions put both networks in the few-seconds range. Ripple’s XRP overview says XRP cross-border payments settle in “3+ seconds.” XRPL consensus documentation describes near-real-time settlement of approximately three to six seconds. Stellar’s network overview reports a settlement time of five seconds.

These figures describe ledger confirmation or settlement, not a guaranteed arrival of spendable fiat in a bank account. They are useful for comparing protocol behavior, but they do not predict every user’s experience.

Why a five-second ledger can still mean a longer payment

  1. An exchange or payment provider converts the sender’s currency into XRP, XLM or another asset.
  2. The provider performs identity, sanctions and fraud checks.
  3. A custodian or wallet service signs and broadcasts the transaction.
  4. The network confirms the ledger transaction.
  5. A market maker, exchange or payout partner converts the asset again and sends funds through a local banking or cash network.

Only the fourth step is represented by the three-to-six-second or five-second estimate. Exchange queues, compliance review, liquidity shortages, bank cut-off times and local payment rails can add minutes, hours or more. Therefore, the fairest answer to “Which is faster?” is that their ledger confirmation times are broadly similar; the provider and payout path usually determine the user-visible completion time.

How cross-border payment paths work

An XRPL bridge-liquidity route

Suppose a payment provider needs to move value from one national currency to another without pre-funding a correspondent account in the destination country. It can acquire XRP, send it over XRPL, and sell it for the destination currency. XRP functions as a bridge asset, while the ledger’s decentralized exchange can provide a route between issued currencies and XRP.

XRPL consensus documentation describes payments using the cheapest available currency trade orders to bridge currencies. In practice, the provider still needs sufficient order-book depth, reliable market makers and compliant on- and off-ramps. If liquidity is thin, the trading spread can dominate the 10-drop network fee.

A Stellar path-payment route

Stellar’s path payments let a sender specify one asset and a recipient receive another. The protocol searches available paths through Stellar liquidity. This model suits remittances and applications in which users want a familiar local-currency balance rather than exposure to the network’s native token.

Path quality depends on the assets issued on Stellar, the depth of the relevant order books and the application’s price limits. A low base operation fee does not remove conversion spreads or the need for a provider to complete local cash-out.

Where XRP/XRPL is most useful

Cross-border liquidity and settlement

XRP’s clearest role is as a bridge asset for payment providers that want on-demand liquidity. Instead of locking working capital in many bilateral accounts, a provider can use XRP between currency legs when market access and compliance arrangements allow it.

XRPL decentralized exchange

The integrated DEX provides order-book liquidity for issued currencies and XRP. A payment can use the cheapest available trade path, which is valuable when a direct currency pair is illiquid. The result depends on live quotes, spread and depth rather than on the network fee alone.

Tokenized financial assets

XRPL is promoted for tokenizing crypto-native and real-world instruments, including treasuries, bonds and money-market funds. Issuers must still handle legal ownership, investor eligibility, custody and redemption; putting an asset representation on a ledger does not by itself settle those obligations.

Institutional payment, custody and stablecoin infrastructure

Ripple identifies payments, custody, stablecoins, tokenization, storage, exchange and movement of value as solution areas. These capabilities make XRPL a candidate for institutions that need controlled access, reporting and liquidity integrations rather than a standalone consumer wallet.

Where Stellar/XLM is most useful

Low-cost payments and remittances

Stellar’s low base fee and path-payment design fit consumer and small-business transfers across currencies. An application can keep the user interface in a local currency while the underlying route uses XLM, a stablecoin or another issued asset, provided adequate liquidity exists.

Regulated-finance and real-world-asset issuance

Stellar says banks, investment firms, fintechs and governments can issue stablecoins and other representations of real-world assets. The network can provide issuance and transfer rails, while the issuer remains responsible for reserves, disclosures, eligibility checks and redemption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soroban decentralized applications

Soroban is integrated into Stellar rather than operating as a separate chain. Developers can build decentralized applications and everyday financial services with smart contracts. Resource fees account for execution and storage, so application operators should model workload and state growth in addition to ordinary payment fees.

Interpreting Stellar’s activity figures

The Stellar Development Foundation reports 2.6 billion total operations and $32 billion in payment volume for 2024. Those are foundation-reported 2024 figures, not an independently audited, market-wide estimate. They provide context about reported network use but should not be treated as a guarantee of future activity or liquidity.

What account reserves and operational requirements change

A wallet’s visible transaction fee is only one part of the funding requirement. XRPL reserve rules can require an account to hold XRP even when it sends very small payments, and special transaction types can add capital requirements. Before creating many accounts or trust lines, calculate the reserve exposure as well as expected fees.

For Stellar, include any current minimum-balance rules in the same calculation. The cited fee statements establish the operation fee but do not provide a current reserve figure. Check the live network documentation and the wallet or platform’s account-creation requirements before committing funds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Both networks also require operational controls: secure key storage, transaction signing, destination-address validation, monitoring for failed or partial payment paths and a plan for compliance screening. A protocol’s fast confirmation does not reverse an incorrectly signed or misdirected payment.

How to compare the real cost of a transfer

Use this sequence rather than comparing token quantities in isolation:

  1. Identify the ledger action. Is it a simple transfer, a multi-operation transaction, a path payment, a trust-line or asset issuance action, or a Soroban contract call?
  2. Check the live protocol fee. Confirm the current XRPL minimum or Stellar per-operation fee and whether surge pricing or resource pricing is active.
  3. Price the required balance. Add XRPL reserves or Stellar minimum-balance requirements, plus any liquidity or trust-line setup.
  4. Measure conversion. Obtain the provider’s quoted exchange rate, spread and slippage limit for each currency leg.
  5. Add service charges. Include custody, withdrawal, compliance, market-making and local payout fees.
  6. Model timing. Separate ledger confirmation from provider review, bank processing and recipient availability.

This method can produce a higher total cost on a network with a lower base fee if its available currency route is less liquid or its payout partner charges more.

Which network should you choose?

Choose XRP/XRPL when

  • Your principal problem is cross-border liquidity or settlement between financial institutions.
  • You need an integrated DEX and want XRP to act as a bridge asset between issued currencies.
  • You are evaluating institutional custody, stablecoin, tokenization or payment infrastructure.
  • Your team can manage reserve requirements, regulated access and professional liquidity relationships.

Choose Stellar/XLM when

  • You are building low-cost payments or remittances for a broad user base.
  • Recipients should receive a different asset or local-currency stablecoin through a path payment.
  • You need an issuance rail for regulated stablecoins or other real-world assets.
  • You are developing decentralized applications and want Soroban’s integrated smart-contract environment.

Use a neutral evaluation when both fit

Run the same test transaction and currency route on each network, then record confirmation time, quote received, slippage, reserve capital, provider fees and final payout time. A controlled pilot is more informative than declaring a winner from the 10-drop and 0.00001-XLM figures alone. Verify that the exchanges, custodians, market makers and local payout services you need support the chosen assets in your target jurisdictions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important limits and changing figures

Protocol fees, reserve values, surge thresholds, token prices, reported volumes, legal treatment, exchange support and commercial partners can change. The figures in this article were verified on October 19, 2026. Recheck current XRPL and Stellar documentation, wallet requirements and provider schedules immediately before making a transaction or designing a production integration.

The durable distinction is functional: XRP/XRPL is optimized around bridge liquidity and institutional settlement rails, while Stellar/XLM combines inexpensive multi-currency payments with issuance and Soroban applications. Ledger speed is close enough that liquidity, compliance and payout operations usually decide the practical result.
