XRP, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) are tied to networks built for different purposes, with different consensus and supply designs. Bitcoin is framed as peer-to-peer digital money, Ethereum as a programmable application platform, and the XRP Ledger as a settlement-focused network with payment and exchange functions. Those differences can help an investor assess what each asset is for; they do not establish which asset will rise in price or outperform.

At a glance: XRP vs. Bitcoin vs. Ethereum

“XRP” is the asset; the XRP Ledger, often shortened to XRPL, is its network. ETH is Ethereum’s native asset, and BTC is Bitcoin’s. Keeping the assets distinct from their networks helps avoid treating a network feature as a direct prediction about an asset’s investment performance.

Comparison Bitcoin (BTC) Ethereum (ETH) XRP and the XRP Ledger (XRPL)
Main design emphasis Peer-to-peer digital money, according to Bitcoin.org. A platform for applications and digital economies, with smart contracts as core functionality, according to Ethereum.org. A ledger with payment and settlement capabilities and decentralized exchange functionality, according to XRPL documentation.
Consensus Proof-of-work: miners use computational work to confirm transactions and protect their ordering. Proof-of-stake. XRPL’s own validator-based consensus protocol; it is neither Bitcoin-style proof-of-work nor Ethereum-style proof-of-stake.
Supply design Bitcoin.org describes a protocol-enforced eventual cap of 21 million BTC. The block subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks, or roughly every four years. The cited Ethereum.org comparison gives no fixed maximum. ETH is issued in relation to the amount staked and burned in relation to network activity. A 2025 SEC-filed registration statement describes an initial issuance of 100 billion XRP and no mining-based issuance. This is an issuer-filed description, not an independent supply audit.
Timing stated by the source Bitcoin.org says a first confirmation is typically about 10–60 minutes; confirmation timing is probabilistic. Ethereum.org says around 15 minutes to finality. XRPL documentation describes near-real-time settlement in three to six seconds.
Investor question Do Bitcoin’s monetary design and risks fit your investment thesis? Does Ethereum’s programmable network functionality matter to your thesis? Do XRP and XRPL’s payment and ledger design fit your thesis, given their adoption, governance and legal risks?

The timing figures are source-specific descriptions, not a like-for-like benchmark. A transaction confirmation, settlement and protocol finality are related concepts but are not interchangeable, and an individual transaction or wallet may show different timing. The figures also do not provide a comparable measure of live network capacity. No single throughput or speed ranking follows from them.

What each network is designed to do

Bitcoin: peer-to-peer digital money

Bitcoin.org describes Bitcoin as peer-to-peer digital money. Miners use proof-of-work to confirm transactions and help protect their chronological ordering. Users can express BTC in smaller units: Bitcoin.org states that one bitcoin equals 100,000,000 satoshis.

The issuance schedule is part of Bitcoin’s monetary design. Bitcoin.org says the block subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks—roughly every four years—and that the schedule enforces an eventual 21 million BTC cap. A supply rule describes how new coins are issued; it does not guarantee a particular price or return.

Ethereum: a programmable application platform

Ethereum is built to support applications and digital economies, rather than focusing primarily on peer-to-peer currency. Smart contracts—programs that run on the network—are core functionality. Ethereum uses proof-of-stake.

ETH’s supply mechanics are not captured well by calling it simply “limited” or “unlimited.” The cited Ethereum.org comparison says there is no fixed maximum supply: ETH is issued in relation to the amount staked and burned in relation to network activity. These mechanisms affect issuance, but the source does not provide a price forecast.

XRP and XRPL: a payment and settlement-oriented ledger

XRPL documentation describes a validator-based consensus protocol that does not rely on competitive proof-of-work resource use. It also describes payment and settlement capabilities and a decentralized exchange that can route payments through available currency orders. The documentation’s stated settlement time of three to six seconds is a network description, not a guarantee that every payment, exchange or transfer in every corridor will complete in that time.

That functionality belongs to the ledger; it should not be confused with a guarantee of demand for XRP. The cited material does not establish adoption, liquidity in every payment corridor or investment performance. A 2025 SEC-filed registration statement describes XRP as initially issued at 100 billion and describes the ledger’s validator consensus and cross-border use case. Treat those characterizations as statements in an issuer-filed document, not independent measurements.

How to interpret the speed and consensus differences

Consensus is the process a network uses to agree on transaction history and valid state. Proof-of-work, proof-of-stake and XRPL’s validator-based protocol are different ways of doing that; their names alone do not say which asset is a better investment.

  • You can lock it up if you still feel unsafe, the hole on bitcoin wallet is 6mm/0.24inch.
  • Bitcoin confirmation: Bitcoin.org’s typical first-confirmation estimate is about 10–60 minutes. Block discovery is probabilistic, and fees can affect how long a transaction waits. A confirmation is evidence that a transaction has been included in the chain; it is not the same wording or measure as protocol finality.
  • Ethereum finality: Ethereum.org’s around-15-minute figure is its stated time to finality. It should not be read as the exact time every wallet displays a first confirmation.
  • XRPL settlement: XRPL documentation describes settlement as near-real-time in three to six seconds. That source’s settlement language is not directly comparable to Bitcoin’s first-confirmation estimate or Ethereum’s finality estimate.

These figures come from different sources and use different timing terms. They are not a controlled test under common conditions, nor do they establish live throughput, transaction cost in a particular situation or the experience of every user.

Supply rules are not investment forecasts

Bitcoin’s eventual cap, Ethereum’s issuance-and-burning mechanics, and XRP’s initial issuance describe different supply models. They may matter to an investor’s thesis, but none on its own demonstrates scarcity in an economically meaningful sense, future demand or likely returns. A fixed cap is not a price floor, and the absence of a fixed maximum is not by itself proof that an asset’s supply will grow at a particular rate.

The figures also have different evidentiary bases: the Bitcoin cap and halving schedule are described by Bitcoin.org; Ethereum.org describes ETH issuance and burning; and the 100 billion XRP initial issuance comes from a 2025 SEC-filed registration statement. The latter is an issuer-filed description, not an independently measured supply audit.

Legal context for XRP

A 2025 SEC-filed 10-K says that a New York federal court entered final judgment in August 2024, imposing a $125 million civil penalty and an injunction relating to institutional XRP sales. The filing also says Ripple and the SEC dropped their appeals in August 2025, leaving the rulings intact.

This is a narrow account of the court proceedings as reported in that filing. It should not be generalized into a blanket statement about XRP’s legal status in every country, transaction type or regulatory context.

Risk, custody and questions to ask before comparing

Separate design from investment risk

A network’s purpose, consensus mechanism and supply rules explain design choices; they do not determine future asset prices. Bitcoin.org warns that bitcoin is volatile, that its price can rise or fall unpredictably over short periods, and that bitcoin is high risk. The cited material does not supply a comparable volatility or return estimate for ETH and XRP, so it would be misleading to rank all three on that basis here.

Before forming a view, consider what your thesis depends on: monetary design, programmable applications, payment and settlement functionality, ecosystem use, or another factor. Also ask what evidence would change your view. The design descriptions above do not establish current adoption, market share, liquidity, returns or expected performance.

Custody is a separate decision

After deciding whether to own an asset, consider how it will be held and who controls the keys. A hardware wallet is one optional custody category, not protection against an asset’s price decline. Check the wallet maker’s current documentation for explicit support for the asset and the relevant network before relying on a particular model. In particular, verify BTC, ETH and XRP/XRPL support separately rather than assuming that support for one implies support for the others.

A practical comparison checklist

  • Identify whether the thesis is about the asset, the network’s functionality, or both.
  • Compare supply mechanics using the source and definition behind each claim, rather than treating unlike issuance models as a single scarcity ranking.
  • Read timing claims by their stated measure—confirmation, settlement or finality—and avoid treating them as an equivalent speed test.
  • Assess legal and jurisdictional context for the specific asset and transaction rather than assuming one court account resolves every question.
  • Plan custody and key management independently of the investment thesis, and verify current network compatibility for any wallet you may use.
