Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGive an AI coding agent only the access its current task requires, inside an isolated workspace with restricted files and network access. Keep production credentials out of its environment, treat project and web content as untrusted input, and require a person to review and test changes before they are merged or deployed. The agent’s practical authority comes from the files, tools, commands, network, and credentials its runtime can reach—not from what its instructions say it should do.
What access does an AI coding agent actually have?
An agent can act through the resources exposed to its runtime: repository files, shell commands, connected tools, network access, and credentials. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance puts it plainly: “Agent-generated code can access the files, credentials, and network available to its environment.” A sandbox is therefore a boundary to configure and verify, not a guarantee that the agent cannot cause harm.

This matters even when the agent has read-only repository access. If it can make outbound network requests, it may be able to transmit data it can read. Likewise, an agent that cannot deploy directly may still edit a CI workflow, package script, Dockerfile, or build configuration that runs later with broader permissions.
Set up a bounded workspace before connecting the agent
Define one task and its acceptance criteria
Describe the intended change, the files or area involved, and what counts as complete. A narrow task makes it easier to grant only the access needed and to spot unrelated changes in review.

Use an isolated, disposable environment
Prefer a fresh branch or worktree, restricted development container, virtual machine, or ephemeral cloud workspace over an agent sharing your everyday workstation context. Limit filesystem access to the project paths needed for the task. Where available, restrict executable commands and apply runtime resource limits. OWASP recommends sandboxed execution, tool allowlists, scoped ephemeral credentials, and resource limits in its Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet.
Isolation is only useful to the extent that it actually separates files, processes, credentials, and network access. Check the configuration rather than assuming that a product’s “sandbox” label means every boundary is in place.
Grant only the permissions the task needs
Separate the ability to inspect files from the ability to change them. For routine code work, avoid administrative, billing, email, organization-management, and production-deployment tools. Give write access only to the relevant repository or branch, and connect only tools and operations you have reviewed. Validate tool arguments where you control the integration.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Make consequential actions explicit rather than silently available: production writes, deployment, changes to CI/CD, and access to sensitive systems should require a human approval gate. OpenAI describes bounded execution, approval for higher-risk actions, and action logging in its account of running Codex safely at OpenAI; these are practices described for that deployment, not a guarantee about every agent product.
Restrict outbound network access
If the task does not need internet access, disable outbound traffic for the agent environment. If it does, allow only the required destinations and methods through a controlled proxy or network policy. OpenAI’s sandbox security guidance recommends limiting outbound traffic to approved endpoints.
Do not treat read-only repository access as a data-loss safeguard when network egress is open: information the agent can read may still be sent elsewhere. Avoid unrestricted web fetching unless the task requires it, and account for fetched pages as untrusted input.

Keep production secrets out of the agent environment
Do not expose production API keys, SSH private keys, cloud administrator credentials, or organization-wide secrets in files or environment variables the agent can read. OpenAI’s guidance notes that sandbox code can read environment keys and describes keeping application credentials outside the environment, using a proxy to provide credentials for approved destinations. A secret manager does not solve the problem if it injects a long-lived secret directly into the agent’s reachable environment.

When credentials are necessary, scope them to the task, destination, and permitted operations; make them short-lived where possible; and plan how to revoke them. OWASP’s AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet also addresses least privilege, tool scopes, exfiltration, and oversight.
Treat repository and website content as untrusted input
Instructions intended to manipulate an agent can be embedded in ordinary material it reads: issues, pull requests, comments, README files, dependency notes, logs, external pages, or tool responses. Treat that content as data, not authority. A system prompt alone is not a reliable defense against malicious or misleading content.

OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet covers indirect prompt injection and recommends treating repository content as untrusted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review and test changes before merge or deployment
Keep the agent’s work in a change surface a person can inspect. Review the complete diff, run the project’s normal tests and security checks, and pay particular attention to files that may execute automatically or carry deployment authority:
- Package scripts and build steps
- CI workflows and other automation
- Dockerfiles and container configuration
- Deployment settings and infrastructure configuration
Require explicit approval before merging or deploying consequential changes. GitHub’s Copilot agent guidance says generated content should be reviewed and tested for correctness and security concerns before merging. OWASP likewise recommends approval gates for CI/CD agents. Keep logs of agent actions so you can investigate unexpected behavior.

Compare agent setups by their security controls
A local IDE agent, hosted coding agent, and custom-built agent may expose different boundaries. Compare the actual configuration for the product, edition, and deployment you plan to use:
- Filesystem isolation and path-level restrictions
- Separation between users and workloads
- Outbound network and destination controls
- How credentials are injected, scoped, and brokered
- Granularity of repository and connected-tool permissions
- Approval gates for consequential actions
- Action logs and audit trails
- How quickly you can revoke access
Product defaults and capabilities can change, so verify the current documentation, hosting arrangement, OAuth scopes, network behavior, and approval settings for your exact setup. These controls provide a way to evaluate options; they do not establish that one vendor is categorically safer than another.
