XopProtector is a build-time Android packer paired with a native shell inside the protected APK—not an Android library AAR. That architecture lets a team layer DEX encryption, method packing or virtualization, native-library protection and runtime defenses at selected scopes. It also makes the important trade-offs configurable: safer size limits versus broader native coverage, eager versus lazy loading, and stronger transformation versus easier compatibility.

The project can raise the cost of reverse engineering, but it does not eliminate it. More importantly for release engineering, there is no published independent device-matrix benchmark establishing a universal APK-size increase, startup delay or runtime overhead. Those numbers must be measured on the application and devices you actually support.

What XopProtector is and where it runs

XopProtector is organized as a monorepo with :native, :demo, :packer and desktop modules. Its packer runs during the build on Windows or in CI. The resulting protected APK carries a native runtime shell, including libprotector.so, that performs protected-code handling on the device.

This separation matters during integration. You do not add XopProtector as an Android dependency and then expect Gradle to transform every build automatically. Instead, the packer consumes an APK and exported shell files, applies the selected policy, and emits the protected package. The Android application therefore carries the runtime component, while transformation work happens before distribution.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Protection layers you can combine

  • PDX1 DEX packaging and encryption: packages and protects DEX content so a shipped APK does not expose the original representation directly.
  • PVM1 method packing: packs selected methods into a protected representation.
  • PVM2 true virtual-machine protection: virtualizes eligible methods, increasing the work required to reconstruct their behavior.
  • Native SO protection: optionally encrypts eligible native libraries, including RC4 encryption of eligible business-library .text regions.
  • RASP and self-guarding: adds runtime checks, hook scans and related anti-tampering responses.
  • Encrypted assets and resource-path protection: protects non-DEX material and makes straightforward resource discovery harder.
  • Proxy/VPN heuristics: supplies configurable environment signals that an application can use as part of its own risk policy.

These are available mechanisms, not a promise that every option belongs in every application. A payment flow, a media codec and a general business screen have different compatibility and performance requirements. Treat scope selection as an engineering decision rather than enabling every switch by default.

Why stability is a first-class protection requirement

Obfuscation that crashes on a particular OEM build, breaks reflection or delays the first screen is not a successful release. Android compatibility depends on the ART implementation, API level, CPU architecture, OEM changes, multidex layout, native libraries, reflection, dynamic class loading and third-party SDK behavior. Protection changes the assumptions those components make, so a clean build is only the beginning of validation.

What the documented policies try to preserve

The balanced and performance-oriented policies hollow the manifest application package while skipping framework and component classes. Leaving more framework-facing and component code in an AOT-friendly form is intended to reduce integration risk while still protecting selected application code. The exact result depends on your package, entry points and rules; it is not a universal compatibility guarantee.

Open-source implementation details are useful when a failure occurs: an engineering team can inspect how a class, method or native library is handled instead of treating the protector as an opaque service. That inspectability transfers responsibility to the team, however. You still need reproducible builds, crash-symbol handling, staged rollout and a plan for updating the protector when Android or an SDK changes.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

A practical device and feature matrix

Before production rollout, exercise the protected build—not just the unprotected baseline—against the combinations your support policy promises. Include representative low-, mid- and high-tier devices, every supported API level, each shipped ABI, and OEM variants that matter to your users. Exercise cold and warm launch, background restore, process death, deep links, notifications, multidex code paths, reflection-heavy screens, dynamic feature loading and every native SDK. Compare login, navigation, media, file access, biometric prompts and network error handling rather than limiting the test to the splash screen.

How APK-size controls work

Native protection can add encrypted material, metadata and runtime support. XopProtector therefore exposes explicit size policies instead of treating every native library identically.

Mode Documented behavior When it fits
safe Default from version 0.6.12 onward. Applies industry and relocation skips, keeps a default 12 MB extra-size budget, and skips SO files larger than 8 MB unpacked. General releases where download size and compatibility need predictable guardrails.
aggressive Retains a soft size budget but emits warnings as protection expands the package. Teams willing to investigate warnings for more native coverage.
max Removes the size budget and encrypts every eligible SO. High-risk builds where native coverage is more important than package growth.

The corresponding CLI setting is --protect-so-mode safe; choose the mode deliberately in your build configuration. The 12 MB figure is a default budget, not a measured increase for every application. Actual growth depends on the number and contents of eligible libraries, alignment, metadata and the other protection layers you enable. Likewise, the 8 MB threshold refers to an unpacked SO file; a compressed APK entry can have a different on-disk size.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to choose a size policy

  1. Record the release APK or app-bundle artifacts and their download and installed sizes before protection.
  2. Protect the same build with safe, then inspect which SO files were skipped and why.
  3. Measure the protected artifact after signing and compression. Keep download size, installed size and expansion-time storage as separate metrics.
  4. Use aggressive only after reviewing every budget warning; do not silently accept a warning that pushes a constrained device over its storage or delivery limit.
  5. Reserve max for a threat model that justifies removing the budget, and test install, update and first launch on low-storage devices.

Startup and runtime performance: what is optimized and what is not proven

Protection can add work before code is available to ART, during native-library loading or when a protected method executes. The project documents several optimizations: class-batch hollow restore, a startup DEX read/write hold, parallel file prepatching before ART mapping, and a cold-start decrypt-to-extract pipeline that avoids creating a plaintext ZIP. Warm starts can skip recopying code.bin, and native-library decryption can run asynchronously.

Those design notes describe intended behavior, not a benchmark. No independent source provides named devices, Android versions, baseline APKs, startup timings, memory measurements or runtime-overhead figures for XopProtector. Do not publish a percentage slowdown or claim that startup is unaffected without collecting and documenting those measurements.

Choosing eager or lazy SO decryption

SO loading mode Behavior Trade-off
eager Fully materializes and preloads keyed libraries during cold start. More predictable first use of protected native code, but more work and memory pressure at launch.
lazy Decrypts a library on its first dlopen, then background-fills remaining keyed libraries for warm reuse. Less initial work, with possible latency on the first path that loads a library.

Choose based on the app’s launch path. An application that immediately needs one small native library may favor eager loading for predictability. An application with many optional features may prefer lazy loading so users do not pay for libraries they never open. Measure both cold start and first-use latency; a fast splash screen can hide a delay on the first camera, map or media action.

Measure the protected build correctly

  • Use identical release configuration, signing, minification and network conditions for baseline and protected builds.
  • Record cold start after force-stop and warm start after backgrounding, with enough repetitions to show variation.
  • Capture time to first frame and time to the first usable screen, not only process creation.
  • Measure peak and steady-state memory, first-use latency for protected methods and native-library load time.
  • Repeat after process death, upgrade installation and low-storage conditions.
  • Report device model, API level, ABI, build version and measurement method with every result.

Can protection be limited to sensitive code?

Yes, the architecture is designed for layered, configurable scope rather than an all-or-nothing switch. DEX encryption, method packing or virtualization, native SO protection and RASP can be selected independently or applied to different portions of an application. In practice, start with the code and assets whose disclosure would materially harm the product: licensing logic, proprietary algorithms, credential-handling paths or high-value business rules. Leave framework-facing glue, reflection contracts and fragile third-party integration points in a less transformed policy when compatibility requires it.

Use the available profiles—balanced, industry, aggressive, perf and max—as starting policies, then refine inclusion and exclusion rules in a test branch. Keep a written map of what is protected, what is intentionally skipped and why. That map is essential when a future SDK update changes class loading or when an incident team needs to know which implementation is actually present on devices.

Installation and build workflow

Fastest trial path

The project recommends trying its self-contained Windows package first. The desktop distribution includes the packer engine and, for end users, does not require a separate Android SDK, NDK or .NET setup. This is useful for a compatibility trial because it reduces environmental variables before you automate the process in CI.

Source-build prerequisites

  • JDK 17 or newer.
  • Android SDK and NDK for native components.
  • .NET SDK 7 or newer if you build the desktop UI.

Typical protection sequence

  1. Produce a reproducible release APK from the unprotected application.
  2. Export the shell files and invoke the packer JAR with the selected profile and native-library mode.
  3. Inspect the packer output for skipped classes, skipped SO files, budget warnings and transformation errors.
  4. Sign the protected artifact using the same release process used for distribution.
  5. Run automated smoke tests, then the device and feature matrix before staged deployment.
  6. Retain the exact profile, rules, packer version and artifact hashes with the release record.

Because the packer is a build-time CLI or library rather than an Android AAR, CI should treat it as a distinct build stage. Fail the build on unexpected skips or warnings that violate your policy, and keep an unprotected emergency build path for rollback testing.

What security protection can and cannot promise

Encryption and virtualization make static inspection and routine patching harder; runtime checks can detect some hooks or hostile environments. None of these mechanisms makes secrets safe when they must eventually be used on a device controlled by someone else. A determined analyst can observe execution, instrument a process, extract keys or attack an unprotected server-side decision.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

That limitation should shape the threat model. Keep authoritative authorization, high-value secrets and abuse prevention on a server where possible. Use the protector to increase effort, reduce casual extraction and detect selected runtime conditions—not as a replacement for secure protocol design, credential rotation, least privilege or server-side validation. The project also states that it should be used only for software you are authorized to distribute and not to conceal malware.

How to evaluate XopProtector against another option

A meaningful comparison needs more than a feature checklist. Evaluate the same application, release settings and device matrix using the following axes:

Axis Questions to answer
Protection scope Does it cover DEX, methods, native SO files, assets and runtime attacks at the granularity you need?
APK and install size What is the signed download size, installed size and expansion storage before and after protection?
Startup How do cold start, warm start and first native-library use change on supported devices?
Runtime and memory Do protected methods or lazy loads affect frame time, peak memory or battery-sensitive paths?
Compatibility Are all API levels, ABIs, OEM variants, multidex, reflection and dynamic loading paths covered?
Build and CI Can the transformation be reproduced, audited and rolled back with your existing signing pipeline?
Observability Can you identify a protection-induced crash, hook detection or skipped file from logs and release metadata?
Maintenance Who owns rule updates, Android-version validation and incident response?

Bottom line for teams deciding whether to adopt it

XopProtector stands out less through a single headline benchmark than through control over the trade-off. It combines build-time packing with an on-device native shell, offers multiple DEX, method, native and runtime layers, documents size budgets and loading modes, and provides profiles that can be tuned for compatibility or stronger coverage. The same flexibility means there is no responsible one-number answer for “How much size?” or “How much slowdown?” Your application, rules, libraries and supported devices determine the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adopt it when you can run a measured, staged validation program and when raising reverse-engineering cost is worth the added build and maintenance complexity. Start with a constrained profile, protect the highest-value code, measure cold and warm behavior, inspect every skip and warning, and expand coverage only when the evidence from your own release supports it.
