The practical dividing line is not simply battery capacity or camera count. It is whether you want a phone with a straightforward local purchase and support path, or whether you are willing to do import due diligence to obtain Xiaomi’s design.

Availability and ownership risk
Galaxy Z Fold8 has a documented launch path
Samsung’s US announcement lists general availability from August 7, 2026 and names Amazon.com among launch retailers. Samsung published a US starting price of $1,899.99, plus market-specific starting prices of €1,999 and £1,699. These are launch figures, not a promise of the price you will pay today. Promotions, trade-in credits, storage variants, taxes and stock can change the final total.
A published launch does not eliminate every ownership check. Before ordering, confirm the local model number, supported carrier bands, eSIM or SIM configuration, warranty territory and repair terms. Samsung’s support policies and available configurations can differ by country.
MIX Fold 4 should be treated as a market-specific import unless proven otherwise
Xiaomi’s investor disclosure confirms that MIX Fold 4 was unveiled in July 2024. The product page identified for the phone is a China-market page. Its existence proves the device is real; it does not, by itself, prove that Xiaomi sells or supports the phone globally.
If you are outside the phone’s intended market, verify all of the following before paying:
- The seller’s exact model and whether it is new, refurbished or previously activated.
- The firmware region, available system languages, required Google services and compatibility with the apps you use.
- LTE and 5G bands for your carrier, including roaming bands if you travel.
- Who provides the warranty, where repairs are performed and whether shipping is your responsibility.
- The return window, restocking rules, import duties, VAT or sales tax and the cost of sending a large foldable back.
A low advertised import price can stop being low after shipping, tax and a return-risk premium are included. Do not assume that a listing on a marketplace means Xiaomi provides local warranty support.
Display shape changes how each phone feels
Samsung’s Fold8 layout
Samsung lists the standard Galaxy Z Fold8 with a 5.5-inch cover display using a 10:16 ratio and a 7.6-inch inner display using a 4:3 ratio. Samsung positions the cover screen for quick interactions and the larger panel for video, games, reading and multitasking.
The 4:3 inner screen is a significant part of the Fold8’s redesign. A squarer opened display can make two-column apps, document work and side-by-side tasks feel more natural than a tall phone screen. It can also leave different amounts of unused space in apps that were designed for conventional smartphone proportions. Whether that trade-off helps you depends on the apps you use and how often you open the phone.
Do not infer MIX Fold 4 ergonomics from the name
The available Xiaomi material does not establish a matching set of panel dimensions or aspect ratios in the cited information. MIX Fold 4 may therefore feel substantially different when closed and opened, even though both phones are book-style foldables. Compare the actual physical dimensions and display proportions for the exact regional model before buying, ideally in person or through a seller with a reliable return policy.
Pay attention to the tasks you perform one-handed. Cover-screen width affects typing, narrow web layouts and video framing. Open-screen proportions affect split-screen multitasking, reading, gaming controls and how much letterboxing appears in video. A diagonal measurement alone cannot predict those experiences.
Portability and hinge design
Fold8 has a stated 201 g weight
Samsung lists Galaxy Z Fold8 at 201 g and calls it the lightest Galaxy Z Fold yet. That number is useful for comparing the Fold8 with other phones, but handling also depends on thickness, hinge geometry, cover-screen width and how the weight is distributed between the two halves.
Xiaomi reports a thinner, lighter hinge design, not a verified phone weight
Xiaomi Corporation reported a 34% reduction in hinge volume and a 16% reduction in hinge weight for MIX Fold 4 compared with its referenced predecessor. These are Xiaomi’s own comparisons, not independent measurements. The cited disclosure describes MIX Fold 4 as lighter and thinner, but it does not provide a phone weight in the evidence available here.

Do not convert the hinge percentages into a conclusion that MIX Fold 4 is lighter than Fold8. A hinge can become smaller while the complete phone’s weight is affected by displays, cameras, battery, frame and regional configuration. Verify the exact specification if pocket weight is a deciding factor.

Battery capacity is not battery life
MIX Fold 4 has the larger stated capacity
Xiaomi reports a 5,100 mAh battery for MIX Fold 4. Samsung reports 4,800 mAh for Galaxy Z Fold8. The difference is real on the specification sheet, but capacity alone cannot establish which phone lasts longer.
Endurance depends on display brightness, refresh behavior, modem conditions, processor workload, camera use, signal strength, software configuration and whether you spend more time on the cover or inner screen. A larger battery can be offset by a more demanding display or weaker radio conditions.
Samsung’s video figure is a manufacturer claim
Samsung says Fold8 supports more than 26 hours of video playback. Treat that as a Samsung-stated result whose test conditions matter, not as a guarantee for mixed daily use. It should not be compared directly with Xiaomi’s 5,100 mAh figure to declare a winner, because the available Xiaomi evidence does not provide an equivalent playback test.
For a purchase decision, ask what your own day looks like: navigation on cellular data, long video sessions, camera use, gaming, work apps and frequent opening of the inner display. If you import MIX Fold 4, also confirm charger compatibility and whether the included charger or charging standard is appropriate for your country.
Cameras: lens count does not settle the question
MIX Fold 4’s camera hardware
Xiaomi describes MIX Fold 4 as having a Leica optical quad-camera system. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform is also listed in Xiaomi’s disclosure. Those details indicate a feature-rich camera and processor package, but they do not establish image quality in daylight, night scenes, portraits, video stabilization or the consistency of the camera app.
Fold8’s listed cameras
Samsung describes Galaxy Z Fold8 with dual 50-megapixel wide and ultra-wide cameras. Two cameras and a lower lens count do not automatically mean weaker results than a four-camera phone. Sensor size, lens quality, image processing, autofocus, stabilization and software tuning matter more than the number printed on a spec sheet.
No independent head-to-head camera testing was established for these exact models. If photography is your priority, compare sample galleries from the same scenes and software versions, or test both phones yourself under the lighting and subjects you actually photograph. MIX Fold 4 is identified with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Mobile Platform. The cited Fold8 material establishes its displays, weight, battery and camera configuration but does not provide an independent performance comparison against Xiaomi. Both phones should be judged by the software and services available in the buyer’s region as well as by silicon.
The sources do not support a blanket statement that one company’s interface is better. Samsung buyers should verify the local Fold8 configuration, carrier certification and current Samsung service terms. Xiaomi import buyers should verify firmware region, language availability, Google services, local payment and banking-app compatibility, notification behavior and update policy before purchase.
Imported firmware can affect more than menus.
