Butterfield Bank is the trading name commonly used for The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited, a Bermuda-headquartered full-service bank and wealth manager. It combines deposit-taking, lending and payments with trust administration, private banking, asset management and custody.

Its model has two connected income engines: interest earned on loans and investments funded partly by deposits, and fees from fiduciary, investment, custody and other banking services. Operations are concentrated in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and the Channel Islands and UK, with smaller businesses in several other jurisdictions.

What Butterfield Bank is

The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited provides ordinary banking for households, businesses and institutions while also handling more specialized financial and fiduciary work. A customer may use it for a current or savings account, mortgage, commercial loan, card or payment service, and another customer may use the same group for a family trust, investment portfolio, custody account or private-banking relationship.

This combination matters because the businesses have different economics. A bank earns interest by accepting funds at one cost and lending or investing them at another yield. Wealth and fiduciary businesses generally charge fees for administration, advice, portfolio management, custody and related expertise. Butterfield can therefore serve a client’s daily cash needs and, where the client qualifies and the service is available locally, more complex financial or family-wealth needs.

How Butterfield’s business model works

1. Banking: deposits, lending and transaction services

Butterfield accepts personal, business and institutional deposits. Those balances are a funding source for mortgages, commercial and small-business loans, corporate credit and other assets. The difference between the yield on interest-earning assets and the cost paid on deposits and other funding is a major component of net interest income.

The spread is not fixed. It changes with central-bank rates, competition for deposits, the mix and credit quality of loans, and how management allocates cash and securities. In its FY2025 results, Butterfield said lower deposit costs and redeployment of funds into higher-yielding assets supported net interest income. That statement describes the company’s 2025 experience, not a guaranteed future result.

Banking also creates non-interest revenue. Products include cards, merchant acquiring, payment processing, foreign exchange, treasury and cash-management services, mobile and internet banking, and account-related services. Fees, service activity and customer balances can produce revenue even when a transaction does not create a loan.

2. Wealth management: fiduciary and investment fees

The wealth-management side includes trust administration, private banking, asset management and custody. Trust and fiduciary teams administer structures for estate and succession planning, complex assets, family affairs, pensions, employee benefits and customized fiduciary arrangements. These services are typically compensated through administration or related fees rather than loan interest.

Asset management provides discretionary and managed portfolios, money-market and mutual-fund offerings, advisory services and self-directed brokerage options. Fees can depend on assets under management, the service selected and the applicable jurisdictional terms. Custody involves safeguarding and servicing securities and other investment assets for clients; custody relationships can generate administration and transaction fees.

3. The integrated relationship

Private banking links the two engines. A dedicated banker can coordinate deposits, lending, cash management, foreign exchange, custody, asset management and trust access for high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients, family offices and institutions. A client who already holds operating cash or a mortgage may therefore use additional services, while a trust or investment relationship can introduce banking needs.

Integration does not mean every client receives every product. Eligibility, local licensing, residency, risk assessment, minimums, tax considerations and product availability differ by market. The model is best understood as a group of adjacent businesses connected by client relationships, not as a single bundled product with identical terms everywhere.

Who Butterfield serves and what it offers

Individuals and families

  • Deposit accounts, cards, payments and digital banking for everyday money management.
  • Residential mortgages, including high-value residential lending in the UK business.
  • Private banking for clients needing coordinated lending, cash management, foreign exchange, custody, investments or trust services.
  • Trust and fiduciary administration for succession, estate and family-wealth arrangements.
  • Managed, advisory or self-directed investment services, subject to local availability and suitability requirements.

  • Cash management, treasury, merchant acquiring and foreign-exchange services.
  • Banking for captive insurers, reinsurers, trust companies, hedge funds, funds, financial intermediaries and other corporate clients.
  • Custody, asset management and fiduciary services for institutional portfolios and complex structures.

The annual-report description also identifies institutional and corporate clients, high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals, family offices and other professional users. The appropriate service depends on the client’s jurisdiction, legal structure, currency, risk profile and purpose for the account.

Where Butterfield operates

Butterfield reports its principal activities in geographic segments rather than as one undifferentiated global operation. The Channel Islands and UK segment comprises Guernsey, Jersey and the UK. Other operations identified in company materials include The Bahamas, Canada, Mauritius, Singapore and Switzerland.

How Butterfield makes money

Net interest income

Deposits are not free funding: Butterfield pays interest on some balances and incurs operating, liquidity and regulatory costs. It then earns interest on mortgages, commercial loans, securities and other assets. Net interest income rises when asset yields increase faster than funding costs or when the balance sheet is redeployed toward better-yielding assets. It can fall when deposit pricing becomes more competitive, rates decline, credit demand weakens or asset quality requires provisions.

Non-interest income

Fees arise from payments, cards, merchant services, cash management, foreign exchange, trust administration, private trust, asset management and custody. In the FY2025 results release, management attributed higher non-interest income to relationship-focused banking and growth in private trust, and also mentioned increased asset-management fees.

“Our relationship-focused banking and private trust businesses increased non-interest income, while net interest income benefited from lower deposit costs and higher yielding asset redeployment.” — Michael Collins, Butterfield Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, FY2025 results release

Credit costs and other items

Interest and fee revenue are not the same as profit. Loan losses, provisions for credit losses, operating expenses, taxes and gains or losses on other items affect the final result. Butterfield’s reported net-revenue measure cited below is after provision for credit losses and other gains or losses, so it should not be read as gross interest and fee receipts.

The published information does not establish one precise percentage split between interest and fee revenue. Segment net revenue is organized by geography, while trust and custody assets under administration and investment assets under management describe different client-asset measures. Those categories should not be combined to infer a revenue mix.

Butterfield’s scale and FY2025 results

The following figures are company-reported and dated. Balance-sheet and client-asset figures are as of December 31, 2025; performance figures cover the year ended that date. Segment amounts are before inter-segment eliminations.

Measure Reported amount How to read it
Net revenue after provision for credit losses and other gains/losses $606.8 million Butterfield, full year 2025
Bermuda segment net revenue $273.7 million 2025; before inter-segment eliminations
Cayman segment net revenue $197.4 million 2025; before inter-segment eliminations
Channel Islands and UK segment net revenue $114.6 million 2025; before inter-segment eliminations
Other segment net revenue $46.6 million 2025; before inter-segment eliminations
Total assets $14.1 billion December 31, 2025
Net loans $4.4 billion December 31, 2025
Total deposits $12.7 billion December 31, 2025
Trust business assets under administration $134.7 billion December 31, 2025; administered client assets, not bank-owned assets
Custody business assets under administration $32.3 billion December 31, 2025; a separate administered-asset measure
Assets under management $6.9 billion December 31, 2025; do not add to AUA
Net income $231.9 million Full year 2025
Core net income $237.5 million Full year 2025; company-defined non-GAAP measure

The deposit-currency disclosure gives 50% in US dollars, 21% in US-dollar-pegged currencies and 23% in pounds sterling. Those stated categories total 94%, so they should not be presented as a complete description of every deposit currency.

For comparison, Butterfield reported 2024 net income of $216.3 million and 2024 core net income of $218.9 million. Management also reported a 17.4% year-on-year increase in core net income per diluted share in 2025. Core net income is not the same accounting measure as statutory net income, so the two should not be treated as interchangeable.

What the asset figures do—and do not—mean

Assets under administration (AUA) generally refer to assets the institution administers, safeguards or services for clients. Assets under management (AUM) refer to assets for which an investment manager has a management mandate. They are different concepts, can overlap in some institutional arrangements and are not the bank’s own balance-sheet assets. Butterfield’s $134.7 billion of trust AUA, $32.3 billion of custody AUA and $6.9 billion of AUM therefore cannot be added to the $14.1 billion of total assets or to one another to estimate Butterfield’s owned assets.

The same dating rule applies to all of these numbers. They describe the position on December 31, 2025, not a live total in October 2026 or a promise about the next reporting period. Butterfield’s investor-relations index lists 2026 quarterly results, and later filings or material announcements may supersede FY2025 figures.

Regulation, listing and practical checks

Bermuda’s banking regulator is the Bermuda Monetary Authority, and the bank operates under Bermuda’s Banks and Deposit Companies Act 1999. Listing on the NYSE and Bermuda Stock Exchange concerns the company’s shares; it does not mean every banking or wealth product is available in every exchange-listed market.

Before opening an account or transferring assets, check the local Butterfield entity, eligibility rules, disclosure documents, exchange controls, tax treatment and deposit-protection framework that apply to your residence and account type. Terms can differ between Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, the UK and other locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official banking page identifies services in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey and Jersey and says its personal and corporate Schedule of Charges was updated effective January 2, 2026. Because charges and terms can change, use the current schedule for the relevant jurisdiction rather than relying on an older rate sheet or a fee quoted for another market.

How to assess whether the model fits a need

  1. Start with jurisdiction and eligibility. Confirm that Butterfield has a licensed operation serving your residence, business location or legal structure.
  2. Classify the need. Separate deposits and payments, borrowing, business cash management, fiduciary administration, investment management and custody; they may involve different teams and documents.
  3. Clarify the client type. Personal, SME, corporate, fund, insurer, trust and family-office applicants can face different onboarding, minimum-balance and due-diligence requirements.
  4. Compare economics. Review interest rates, foreign-exchange spreads, transaction and custody charges, lending terms, minimums and any recurring trust or management fees in the local schedule.
  5. Check access and controls. Ask about branch or banker access, mobile and internet banking, payment cut-off times, reporting, security procedures and service continuity for the currencies you use.
  6. Verify the investment or fiduciary scope. If you need managed assets, a trust, custody or private banking, confirm exactly what is administered, managed or merely held in custody and which legal entity provides it.

This framework evaluates suitability; it does not establish that Butterfield is cheaper, safer or better than another provider. The published company materials support an explanation of its model, not a comparative performance ranking.

What can change the economics

  • Interest-rate cycles: changes in market rates affect loan yields, securities returns and the price of deposits.
  • Deposit competition: customers may demand higher rates or move balances, raising funding costs.
  • Credit quality: defaults and provisions reduce the benefit of lending income.
  • Market values and client activity: investment balances, custody transactions and managed-asset fees can move with markets and client decisions.
  • Regulatory and local-market differences: licensing, capital, anti-money-laundering checks, tax rules and product permissions vary by jurisdiction.
  • Currency exposure: a group operating across US-dollar, dollar-pegged and sterling-linked markets must manage currency and liquidity across entities.

These are structural drivers of a bank-and-wealth-manager model, not forecasts for Butterfield’s next quarter.

Bottom line

Butterfield Bank is a relationship-led financial-services group built around a conventional deposit-and-lending bank plus fiduciary and investment businesses. Deposits help fund loans and other earning assets, while payments, cash management, trust administration, private banking, asset management and custody add fee income. Its strongest operating identity is regional: Bermuda, Cayman and the Channel Islands/UK provide the core reporting segments, supported by smaller international operations. The model’s value to a particular customer depends on local eligibility, the required service, pricing and the current terms of the relevant Butterfield entity.
