On the Android-based Sony Walkman Signature Series WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2, fast drain and failed playback usually have identifiable causes. Start by matching your use to Sony’s runtime estimates, then disable the biggest drains—screen time, wireless radios, sound processing and demanding codecs. For a missing or silent track, verify the file format and size, copy it to the correct folder, update the Music player database, and restart the player. USB-DAC and streaming modes have their own checks.
Which Walkman models and symptoms this guide covers
These steps apply to Sony’s Android-based Signature Series WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2. The battery and playback behavior depends on how the player is being used, so “battery drain” can mean very different things: a screen left on, Bluetooth with LDAC, high-rate DSD playback, a background app, or a battery that has reached the end of its service life.

What battery life is normal for a WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2?
Sony’s figures are approximate, not a guarantee for every listener. They were published in 2022 and vary with volume, screen use, sound adjustments, temperature, charge history, storage activity and the particular file. The estimates below use the stereo-mini headphone output unless noted.

That spread explains why a player can appear healthy with local 44.1 kHz FLAC yet seem to drain rapidly with high-rate DSD or wireless listening. Sony says Bluetooth can reduce battery life by up to 60%, active sound adjustments can reduce it by up to 60%, and High-Res streaming can reduce it by about 20%. The display also consumes considerably when it remains on. These percentages are Sony’s maximum or approximate reductions, not a promise that every session will lose exactly that amount.

Step-by-step: reduce battery drain
1. Power the Walkman off when you are finished
Pausing playback does not have the same effect as shutting down. Press and hold the Power button, then choose the power-off option. Make this your normal habit when the player will sit unused, especially overnight or during travel.
2. Close apps that are not needed
Android apps can remain active after you leave them. Close unused apps before listening and avoid leaving several streaming or media apps open. This removes background activity that otherwise competes with playback and wireless services.
3. Set automatic shutdown
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Auto power off.
- Choose the paused-idle period after which the player should shut down.
Auto power off is particularly useful if you often pause a book, album or podcast and forget that the player is still running.
4. Reduce display use
Lower screen brightness and turn the display off as soon as you finish selecting music. Browsing a large library, reading album art or leaving the screen awake can consume far more energy than a locked player. Sony specifically identifies the screen as a considerable drain.

5. Turn off sound adjustments while testing
Disable all sound adjustments temporarily and compare the next listening session. Equalization and other processing can shorten runtime by up to 60% according to Sony. If you need a particular sound profile, re-enable only the processing you actually use after establishing a baseline.
6. Disable radios you are not using
- Turn off Bluetooth when listening through the wired stereo-mini jack.
- Turn off Wi-Fi when you are playing local files and do not need streaming or downloads.
- For Bluetooth listening, remember that the codec matters: Sony estimates about 20 hours for MP3 over SBC and about 18 hours for FLAC 96 kHz/24-bit over LDAC.
Wireless listening is convenient, but it combines radio activity with codec processing. A wired session with the screen off is a more useful comparison when diagnosing the battery itself.
7. Account for codec and resolution
High-resolution FLAC and DSD files require more processing than ordinary compressed audio. Sony’s estimates fall from about 40 hours for 44.1 kHz/16-bit files to about 35 hours for 192 kHz/24-bit FLAC, 25 hours for 2.8224 MHz DSD and 15 hours for 11.2896 MHz DSD. Use those figures as a fair baseline rather than judging every format against the longest estimate.
8. Check Battery Care before diagnosing a charging fault
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Open Battery Care.
When Battery Care is enabled, the player deliberately limits its maximum charging capacity to reduce battery deterioration. It will not charge completely while this function is active, and Sony states that this behavior is not a malfunction. Disable the feature only if you need a full charge for a long trip; otherwise, the reduced maximum is intentional.

9. Consider temperature and charge history
Runtime is also affected by temperature and by how the battery has been used and charged over time. Compare sessions under similar conditions before deciding that a software setting is responsible. A short run during an unusually hot or cold period is not a reliable measure of long-term capacity.
When battery wear is the likely cause
Sony’s guidance is clear: if the battery is sufficiently charged but the usable life has fallen to about half of its normal span, the battery may be worn out. The earlier WM1A/WM1Z guidance likewise directs owners to a Sony dealer or Sony Service Center for replacement at roughly half the original life.
Use the appropriate runtime baseline for your own setup before making that judgment. For example, a player that once gave about 40 hours on wired 44.1 kHz/16-bit FLAC but now gives about 20 hours under the same conditions has reached the threshold Sony describes. Do not assume a universal replacement price or turnaround time: Sony service availability and costs depend on your region.

Why a transferred file will not play
Confirm the format and protection status
Sony lists support for MP3, WMA, FLAC, WAV, AAC, HE-AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, DSD, APE and MQA. A file can still fail if it is copyright-protected. The player also rejects very large files: files of 4 GB or larger cannot be played, while the limit for APE is 2 GB.

Copy to a folder Music player indexes
Music player scans the internal Music or Download folder and the microSD card’s Music folder. A track stored elsewhere may exist on the storage but remain invisible in the library.
- Connect the Walkman to the computer and copy the supported file into the correct internal or microSD folder.
- Allow the transfer to finish completely before disconnecting the USB cable.
- On the Walkman, open Music player.
- Use Update database to rescan the folders.
Do not rename the default folders. Do not disconnect USB while files are being copied, and do not format the player’s memory on a computer. Those actions can prevent indexing or damage the expected storage structure.
If the song is still missing
Check that you copied to the intended storage (internal memory versus microSD), confirm that the card is mounted, and run Music player > Update database again after the copy has completed. Test one small, unprotected MP3 or FLAC in the correct folder; this separates a library-location problem from a file-specific problem.

Normal restart
- Hold the Power button for two seconds.
- Tap Restart.
Sony says a restart does not delete user data or pairing information. It is therefore the safest recovery step for a library that has stopped updating, an app that will not open, or an intermittent playback error.

Forced restart when the screen is frozen
If the controls do not respond, hold the Power button for 10 seconds. This forces a restart. It is different from a factory reset: your content and pairings are not intentionally erased by the restart procedure.
Fixing no sound in USB-DAC mode
USB-DAC mode has a mode-specific failure that can look like a hardware fault. If another music or video app moves into the foreground, the USB-DAC screen can be backgrounded and sound may stop.
- Return to WALKMAN Home.
- Tap Music player to bring the USB-DAC screen back.
- Start playback again and confirm that the USB-DAC screen remains active.
USB-DAC is intended for music. Using it with video can introduce an audio/video delay, so a delayed soundtrack is a mode limitation rather than evidence that the DAC output has failed.

Streaming and High-Res streaming settings
High-Res streaming is controlled at Settings > Sound > High-Res streaming. With the feature on, supported third-party apps are up-converted to 192 kHz/32-bit. With it off, playback is down-converted to 48 kHz/16-bit. Sony warns that not all online music-service apps support this function, so the setting does not guarantee high-resolution output in every app.
Streaming also keeps Wi-Fi active and can leave the screen on while you browse. Sony estimates that High-Res streaming can reduce battery life by about 20%, while Wi-Fi, screen use and any sound adjustments add their own load. For a clean battery comparison, test a local file in Music player with the screen off, then compare streaming under the same volume and output conditions.
Choose the least destructive fix first
The right troubleshooting path depends on four questions: how much battery the step consumes, where the audio comes from, whether the file is compatible, and whether recovery could erase data.

A practical diagnostic sequence
- Establish the baseline: note the file type, resolution, output (wired or Bluetooth), wireless radios, sound adjustments and screen use.
- Remove obvious drains: turn off unused Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, lower brightness, close apps and enable Auto power off.
- Test one known-good local file: use an unprotected MP3 or FLAC below the size limit in the correct Music folder.
- Refresh the library: run Music player > Update database after the transfer is complete.
- Restart: use the normal two-second restart; use the 10-second forced restart only when frozen.
- Check the active mode: restore the USB-DAC screen if using USB-DAC, or verify High-Res streaming settings and app support when streaming.
- Evaluate wear: if comparable testing shows roughly half the normal runtime, seek Sony service rather than repeatedly changing playback settings.
What not to do
- Do not treat Battery Care’s intentionally reduced maximum charge as a charging failure.
- Do not compare a high-rate DSD session with Sony’s longest MP3 or 44.1 kHz FLAC estimate.
- Do not rename the default Music or Download folders.
- Do not unplug USB during a transfer.
- Do not format the Walkman’s memory on a computer.
- Do not jump to a factory reset before backing up; it erases user content.
- Do not assume every streaming service supports High-Res streaming just because the setting is enabled.
When to seek service
Contact Sony support, a Sony dealer or a Sony Service Center when controlled tests show the battery delivers about half its former runtime, when the player will not charge even after checking Battery Care, or when a supported, correctly stored file still fails after a database update and restart. Service pricing, replacement availability and turnaround are region-specific, so verify those details locally rather than relying on a universal estimate.
