Microsoft describes the design as carrying forward 25 years of Xbox technology. That wording identifies the controller as an anniversary edition of the current Xbox Wireless Controller family, rather than a new console generation or a separate platform.
Is the X25 worth buying?
The answer depends on what you value. The X25’s functional advantages are the same broad Xbox, PC and mobile compatibility offered by the current Xbox Wireless Controller family. Its premium is justified only if the translucent OG Green appearance, anniversary status or collectible appeal matters to you and the local price is acceptable.

Which X25 editions and packages exist?
Standalone X25 controller
The standalone product is the controller itself in translucent OG Green. Confirm the box contents and regional labeling at checkout. The controller’s battery compartment is designed for two AA cells; a rechargeable pack is not automatically included merely because the controller has a USB-C port.
Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition bundle
Microsoft’s bundle combines the X25 controller with an Xbox Series X console carrying an engraved number. It targets collectors or buyers who need a console as well as the controller. Check the exact bundle contents, console storage specification, included cables and local return terms before paying, because a console bundle is a substantially different purchase from the standalone gamepad.
Standard Xbox Wireless Controller alternatives

They are also the safer choice for a household that needs multiple controllers and does not want every replacement to depend on limited-edition stock. Compatibility and connection methods
Microsoft lists the X25 as compatible with Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Windows 10 and Windows 11, Android and iOS. On Xbox consoles it connects wirelessly. On supported Windows PCs, tablets, iPhones, iPads and Android devices, Bluetooth is the relevant connection method. Mobile and Bluetooth behavior can depend on the device and its software version, so an operating system update or a device-specific limitation can affect pairing or button behavior.

- Install two AA batteries or a compatible rechargeable pack, then close the battery door securely.
- Turn on the console and the controller.
- Use the console and controller pairing controls when a new wireless connection is required; follow the on-screen prompt if the console asks you to select an accessory.
- After pairing, test the controller in the Xbox dashboard before launching a game. If it does not appear, power-cycle both devices and repeat the pairing process.
The X25 is intended for Xbox Series X and Series S wireless use. A Bluetooth connection is not required for the console connection.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs
For a Bluetooth connection, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Add device > Bluetooth in Windows 11. In Windows 10, use Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device. Put the controller into pairing mode using its pairing control, select the Xbox controller when it appears, and then test it in a game or controller-settings screen.
Bluetooth support is device-dependent. A desktop without Bluetooth needs a compatible Bluetooth adapter or another supported Xbox connection method. If the controller pairs but a game does not detect it, close and reopen the game after pairing, check for controller or Windows updates, and test another title to separate a game-specific issue from a connection problem.
Android phones and tablets
- Open Settings > Connected devices (the wording can vary) and choose Pair new device or the Bluetooth menu.
- Place the controller in pairing mode and select it from the discovered-device list.
- Launch a game that supports external controllers and verify the button mapping.
Android manufacturers use different Bluetooth menus and software layers. A phone can show the controller as paired while a particular game ignores it; that is an app-support issue rather than proof that the controller is defective.

iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Put the X25 into pairing mode and tap its name when it appears under available devices.
- Open a controller-compatible game and check the game’s input settings.
Apple device and operating-system support can change over time. If pairing fails, update the device software, remove an old controller entry, restart Bluetooth and try again.

Battery options, runtime and charging
Two standard AA batteries
The X25 uses two AA batteries. Microsoft’s product specification says: AA batteries for up to 40 hours of battery life.
That is an upper-limit claim based on testing with standard AA batteries in preproduction units, not a guaranteed runtime for every player or game.
Microsoft also states: Battery life varies significantly with headsets, additional accessories, usage, and other factors.
Headset use, vibration, wireless conditions and playing time can therefore make your result materially lower than the quoted maximum. Treat 40 hours as a planning reference, not a promise that every pair of batteries will last that long.
Alkaline AAs are the simplest disposable choice. Use two cells of the same type and charge state, install them in the orientation marked inside the compartment, and replace both together. Mixing old and new cells or different chemistries can reduce performance and increase leakage risk.

A rechargeable pack reduces disposable-battery waste and lets you recharge without opening the battery door each time. Microsoft lists an Xbox Rechargeable Battery + USB-C as a separately sold accessory. It is not included by default with the standalone X25, and availability can differ by region.
Before buying, verify that the pack is specified for this controller variant and that the included or chosen USB-C cable is suitable. A USB-C socket does not make every battery pack interchangeable: physical fit, charging circuitry and product certification matter. If a pack does not seat correctly, becomes unusually hot, swells or smells abnormal, stop using it and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
Battery safety and storage
Microsoft warns that non-genuine, incompatible, reused or modified batteries, incorrect installation and poor storage can cause overheating, expansion, venting, leaking or a thermal event. Use genuine or clearly compatible cells and keep batteries dry and away from excessive heat. Remove disposable batteries if the controller will be stored for an extended period, particularly in a hot place.

- Do not attempt to recharge disposable AA cells unless they are explicitly rechargeable and you have the correct charger.
- Do not open, crush, puncture or modify a battery pack.
- Stop charging or using a pack that is damaged, swollen, leaking or abnormally hot.
- Keep loose batteries away from metal objects that could short the terminals.
How to choose between AA and rechargeable power

For occasional play, disposable AAs are usually the least complicated. For daily use, a compatible rechargeable pack can be more convenient, provided you follow its charging and storage instructions. Keep a spare charged option if you play where a cable or charging break would be disruptive.
Where to buy the X25 controller
Start with the local Microsoft Store listing for the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition. Microsoft says prices and availability can vary by retailer, so the product page is the best authenticity and availability reference for your country at the time you order. Authorized retailers are another option when they clearly identify the seller, model and return policy.
Because the X25 is a limited-edition product, listings can differ in important ways. Check all of the following before paying:
- The listing names the Xbox Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition and identifies the translucent OG Green finish.
- The package is new, sealed or explicitly described as used or refurbished.
- The seller is the retailer itself or an authorized marketplace seller with a documented return process.
- The warranty route is clear and the receipt will show the purchase date and seller.
- The listing is for the standalone controller if that is what you want, not the Xbox Series X25 console bundle.
- The return window covers defects, missing accessories and a finish that does not match the description.
Do not treat a low price as proof of a bargain. Limited-edition controllers can be imported, open-box, counterfeit or missing regional warranty coverage. Compare the final delivered price, taxes, shipping, return cost and warranty support rather than the headline number alone.

Microsoft publishes a dedicated Xbox controller warranty document, but there is no single worldwide duration that can be stated safely for every X25 purchase. Warranty duration, exclusions and consumer-law rights vary by country, the seller and whether the controller was bought alone or as part of a console bundle.
Keep the original receipt or electronic invoice. It establishes the purchase date, identifies the seller and can be required when Microsoft or the retailer asks you to verify coverage. Save the serial number and photograph the controller and packaging if you receive a damaged or incomplete item.

Microsoft also says Microsoft Complete provides warranty coverage for two controllers. Confirm the local Microsoft Complete terms, eligibility window and covered device definition before purchasing that plan; availability and conditions are market-specific.
When to contact the retailer first
Contact the seller for a missing item, shipping damage, wrong color, wrong model or a defect discovered immediately after delivery, especially while the retailer’s return window is open. A retailer exchange can be faster than a manufacturer claim.
When to use Microsoft support
Use Microsoft’s local support and warranty process when the retailer’s return period has ended or directs you to the manufacturer. Have the serial number, proof of purchase, console or device used for testing, and a concise description of the fault. Do not disassemble the controller before a support assessment; opening it can affect warranty eligibility.
Common problems and practical fixes
The controller will not turn on
- Replace both AA batteries with a matched pair, or disconnect and reseat the rechargeable pack.
- Check that the battery door is fully closed and the contacts are clean and dry.
- Try a known-good set of batteries before assuming an electronics failure.
- If the controller remains unresponsive, record the steps you tried and contact the seller or Microsoft support while coverage applies.
Bluetooth pairing fails
- Move the controller close to the phone or PC and temporarily turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices that may reconnect to it.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry from the device’s Bluetooth list, restart Bluetooth and pair again.
- Install pending Windows, Android or iOS updates, since Bluetooth support can depend on software version.
- Test the controller on another supported device. If it pairs elsewhere, investigate the original device’s Bluetooth or game support.
It pairs but a game does not respond
Confirm that the game supports external controllers on that operating system, then restart the game after pairing. Check the game’s own controller settings and test a second supported title. A successful Bluetooth connection does not guarantee that every mobile game exposes controller input.
Battery life is much shorter than expected
Check whether a headset or other accessory is connected, whether vibration is heavily used and whether the batteries are old or mixed. The Microsoft figure is “up to 40 hours” under specified preproduction testing; it is not a minimum runtime. Replace questionable cells as a pair or test with a compatible charged pack.

- Decide whether you are paying for the translucent OG Green anniversary design or simply need an Xbox-compatible controller.
- Confirm that you want the standalone controller, not the Xbox Series X25 Limited Edition console bundle.
- Check compatibility with your exact Xbox, Windows, Android or iOS device and software version.
