Both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S support Game Pass, and Microsoft’s official comparison does not show either console receiving an exclusive tier or library advantage. Choose based on the hardware you will use: Series X suits a native-4K display or UHD Blu-ray discs; Series S is the disc-free option for players comfortable with a 1440p target and its available storage. Then compare the current local price of the exact model and choose a Game Pass plan for its features and catalog.
Does Game Pass work on both Xbox consoles?
Yes. Microsoft lists Xbox Series X|S among supported devices. The subscription plan determines the included features; the console does not unlock a separate Game Pass tier. Check Microsoft’s current plan comparison for the features available in your region.

Microsoft’s US comparison currently describes Ultimate as including 500+ games across console, PC and supported devices, and Premium as including 200+ games. Its US overview describes Essential as including 50+ games and PC Game Pass as including 300+ games. These are plan descriptions, not fixed guarantees: Microsoft says catalog counts, titles, features and availability can vary by region, plan, platform and time. PC Game Pass is a PC plan, so evaluate it for its PC access rather than as a console plan.

Plan features can matter more than console choice. For example, Microsoft’s comparison lists online console multiplayer with Ultimate and Premium, and identifies day-one releases and certain partner benefits as Ultimate inclusions not included in Premium. What matters most when comparing the consoles for subscription gaming?
Game Pass games are downloaded to the console or, where the plan and game support it, played through cloud gaming. Either way, the key differences between these consoles are screen resolution, physical-disc support and storage—not a documented difference in Game Pass access.
| Factor | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution positioning | Microsoft lists true 4K. Its comparison displays 12 teraflops; that figure is a specification, not a guarantee of a particular game’s performance. | Microsoft lists 1440p; its Series S FAQ says it can upscale to 4K. Microsoft’s comparison displays 4 teraflops; that figure alone does not establish real-world results for a specific game. |
| Physical discs | Disc-drive variants include a UHD Blu-ray drive; all-digital Series X variants are also listed, so confirm the exact model. | Designed for disc-free gaming; there is no disc-drive option listed in Microsoft’s comparison. |
| Internal storage choices | Check the specific model listing; capacities and configurations vary by variant. | Microsoft lists 512GB and 1TB SSD choices. |
| Game Pass tier or library advantage | No console-exclusive tier or library advantage is identified in Microsoft’s comparison. | No console-exclusive tier or library advantage is identified in Microsoft’s comparison. |
Specifications and model options are from Microsoft’s Xbox console comparison and its Series S FAQ. The consoles share features including up to 120 FPS capability, Quick Resume, Smart Delivery and support for thousands of games across four generations. Those are system capabilities; they do not mean every game supports every maximum or feature.

How do display and discs affect the choice?
Choose Series X for native 4K or disc playback
If you want the console Microsoft positions for true 4K, Series X is the better fit. Its disc-drive variants can also play UHD Blu-ray discs. That can matter if you already use compatible discs or want a physical-media option alongside a subscription. Be precise when buying: a Series X can be all-digital, so the family name alone does not confirm a disc drive.
Choose Series S for an all-digital setup
Series S is built for players who download games and are comfortable with Microsoft’s 1440p target. It can upscale to 4K, but that is not the same specification as Series X’s true-4K positioning. If a 4K display is central to your decision, consider that distinction rather than assuming the consoles are equivalent because both can connect to a 4K screen.

Will storage be enough for a subscription library?
Microsoft lists Series S in 512GB and 1TB SSD configurations. Headline capacity is not the same as usable free space after system software, and game install sizes vary. There is no reliable fixed number of Game Pass games that will fit on either console without checking the current sizes of the particular games and the exact model.
Microsoft lists an optional Xbox Storage Expansion Card that connects through the console’s dedicated port and adds game storage at the same performance as the internal custom SSD. It is an option for people who keep many installed games, not a requirement for every subscriber. Compare the price of the card and console capacity available locally before treating extra storage as part of the purchase.

How should you compare the plan and local price?
- Decide how you want to play. For downloads only, either console can suit Game Pass. For UHD Blu-ray discs, select a Series X variant with a disc drive.
- Match the console to your display. Favor Series X if native 4K positioning is a priority; Series S targets 1440p and can upscale to 4K.
- Choose the Game Pass plan by features. Compare the current local catalog, cloud gaming, online multiplayer and release benefits on Microsoft’s plan page, rather than assuming one console gets a better plan.
- Check the exact model and price. Compare the storage capacity and disc configuration actually sold where you live. Microsoft notes that console prices and availability may vary by retailer.
- Account for library turnover. Game Pass access is subscription access, not permanent ownership: a game may leave the library, or access may end when a subscription expires or is canceled. Microsoft explains this on its Game Pass overview.
