Choose Xbox Series X if you need to play physical game discs. The disc-drive models of Series X can use supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs, and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs through backward compatibility. Xbox Series S is an all-digital console: Microsoft states that disc-based games are not compatible with either its 512GB or 1TB model. A Series X disc is still only a license check; the game is downloaded and installed to storage, and the disc must remain in the drive whenever you play.
Quick decision: which Xbox fits a physical library?
| Decision point | Xbox Series X | Xbox Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game discs | Supported on optical-drive models for compatible Xbox One and Xbox Series X titles; selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs also work through backward compatibility | Not supported; games must be associated with a digital license |
| Display target | Positioned for native or true 4K; up to 120 frames per second with supported content and a compatible display | Designed for 1440p with upscaling to 4K; up to 120 frames per second with supported content and a compatible display |
| Storage configurations listed by Microsoft | 1TB or 2TB SSD models, depending on the configuration and market | 512GB or 1TB SSD models, depending on the configuration and market |
| Best fit | Disc owners, used-game buyers, people who borrow or resell physical copies, and players who want UHD Blu-ray playback | Players building an entirely digital library through the Xbox store, subscriptions, or digital codes |
The storage and resolution differences do not change the disc answer. If a game reaches you on a physical disc, Series X is the relevant choice; Series S cannot add a drive later or install a game directly from a disc.

How Series X handles a physical game
Series X does not run the game directly from the optical disc in the way older consoles often did. The disc proves that you have the required license, while the console places the playable software on its internal SSD or a supported expansion card. The disc then stays in the drive as an ownership check.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the title is supported. A disc must be an Xbox One or Xbox Series X game that the console recognizes, or an Xbox 360/original Xbox title included in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog. Having a disc for an older game is not, by itself, enough.
- Insert the disc into an optical-drive Series X. The console should identify the title and begin the installation or download process. The amount downloaded can be substantially larger than the data physically stored on the disc because the current game package and updates are delivered to the SSD.
- Let the installation finish on local storage. You can use the internal SSD or a separately sold Storage Expansion Card. A disc does not bypass the console’s storage requirement.
- Keep the same disc inserted to play. Once the game has been installed, removing the disc removes the license check. Reinsert it whenever you launch the disc-based copy.
- Install updates when prompted. The installed build can receive patches and other current files, but the disc remains necessary for the physical license.
This process also explains why a physical copy still needs free storage and an internet connection can be useful: the disc supplies entitlement, while the console obtains and stores the playable software. The exact download size and update behavior vary by title, so do not assume that a disc contains the complete, ready-to-run version.

Series S is disc-free by design
Microsoft describes Series S as an all-digital console for disc-free gaming and explicitly says disc-based games are not compatible with either the 512GB or 1TB model. The restriction applies to game discs, not just to a particular generation. An Xbox One disc, an Xbox Series X disc, and an eligible Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc cannot be used as the source of a game installation on Series S.
To play a title on Series S, you need a digital entitlement: a purchase from the Xbox store, a redeemed digital code, or another digital license associated with the account or console under Microsoft’s rules. A physical copy sitting on a shelf does not automatically become that license. If you own a large disc collection and want to keep using it, buying Series S means purchasing digital versions again when they are available.
Series S is therefore sensible only when you are comfortable with an all-digital library. It can run digitally licensed games that are also available on Series X|S, but its lower price or smaller size should not be weighed against a disc requirement it cannot meet.

Series X|S supports select Xbox 360, original Xbox, and Xbox One games. “Select” is important: Microsoft’s catalog determines whether a particular older title is supported. A disc from a compatible generation is not a universal key for every game released on that generation.
Xbox One discs
Supported Xbox One discs are the most straightforward physical use case on Series X. Insert an eligible disc, allow the console to download and install the current game package, and leave the disc inserted during play. Unsupported Xbox One titles will not become playable simply because they are on a disc or because a newer console can run other Xbox One games.

Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs
For an older disc, check the specific game against Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog before buying or transporting it to a Series X. If the title is included, inserting the disc starts a download to the hard drive; the disc must remain in the drive afterward. If the title is absent, the disc does not provide a playable license on Series X.
What happens on Series S
Series S can run an eligible backward-compatible game only through a digital license. An older physical disc cannot trigger the download because the console has no game-disc reader. You would need to own or acquire the digital version supported by the console.
| Disc you own | Series X with optical drive | Series S |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Xbox Series X game | Install from the disc, then keep the disc inserted | Disc cannot be used; digital license required |
| Supported Xbox One game | Install the supported package, then keep the disc inserted | Disc cannot be used; digital license required |
| Supported Xbox 360 game | Disc starts a hard-drive download; keep the disc inserted | Disc cannot be used; digital license required |
| Supported original Xbox game | Disc starts a hard-drive download; keep the disc inserted | Disc cannot be used; digital license required |
| Unsupported title from any older generation | Not playable from that disc through backward compatibility | Not playable from that disc; a separate digital release may or may not exist |
Can your Xbox One disc collection move to Series X?
Often, but only title by title. Series X is the model intended for a physical Xbox One library, yet compatibility is still conditional. Before you buy the console or a used game, identify the exact edition and check whether that title is supported. Special editions, region-specific releases, and games that depended on discontinued services can have different behavior, so the catalog entry for the exact game is the decisive check.
When a disc is supported, the console may download a current version rather than copying every file from the disc. Your broadband allowance, download time, and available SSD space therefore matter even when you already paid for a boxed copy. Once installed, the disc remains a physical key: lending or reselling the copy also means the person who has the disc must keep it available to launch that installation.
Owning an Xbox One disc does not automatically grant a digital license for Series S. If you move from an Xbox One to Series S, plan your library around digital purchases and supported subscriptions rather than around the boxes you already own.

Can Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs work on Series X?
Some can. Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program is selective, so the correct workflow is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Write down the exact game title and, where relevant, its edition.
- Check Microsoft’s current backward-compatibility catalog for that title.
- If it is listed, insert the disc into an optical-drive Series X and wait for the console to begin the hard-drive download.
- Keep the same disc inserted whenever you play the installed game.
The optical drive itself is not a promise that every Xbox 360 or original Xbox disc will work. It also supports UHD Blu-ray media, but media playback capability does not expand the game catalog. A movie disc can be readable while an unlisted game disc remains unsupported.
Storage is part of the physical-game decision
Every disc-based game that works on Series X is installed to storage. Microsoft lists Series X configurations with 1TB or 2TB SSD capacity and Series S configurations with 512GB or 1TB, with availability varying by model and market. Actual usable space is lower than the advertised capacity because the operating system and reserved data occupy part of the drive.
The smaller 512GB Series S is especially important to evaluate if you were considering it as a cheaper way to play a physical collection: it cannot read the collection at all, and its storage size does not change that. On either console, a separately sold Storage Expansion Card can provide additional space when the internal SSD is full.
- Keep free space for the initial installation and future updates; a disc is not a substitute for local storage.
- If you regularly rotate several large games, an expansion card reduces the need to delete and redownload them.
- Moving an installed game between internal storage and an expansion card does not remove the disc requirement for a disc-based license.
- Digital and physical versions use the same general local-storage principle, so storage planning matters even when the box is physical.
Resolution and frame-rate differences do not change disc support
Microsoft positions Series X for native or true 4K output and lists up to 120 frames per second with supported content and a compatible display. Series S is designed around 1440p and can upscale to 4K, with the same up-to-120-frames-per-second ceiling under supported conditions. “Up to 120 FPS” is a capability limit, not a promise that every game reaches 120 frames per second; the game, display, and selected graphics mode all matter.

These targets may help decide between the consoles after the disc question is settled. They do not turn an unsupported disc into a supported one, and they do not let Series S read a physical copy. A disc owner should first choose Series X for the drive, then consider resolution, storage capacity, and display equipment.
Which buyer should choose each console?
Choose Series X when any of these are true
- You own Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox 360, or original Xbox discs and want to keep using supported titles.
- You buy used physical games, borrow discs, or resell games after finishing them.
- You want the option of UHD Blu-ray playback from the console’s optical drive.
- You prefer a physical license check rather than repurchasing a digital version of a game you already own.
- You want Microsoft’s higher-resolution positioning and are pairing the console with a compatible 4K display.
Choose Series S when all of these describe your plans
- You are willing to maintain an entirely digital library.
- You do not need to use existing game discs, even when a title is backward-compatible on Series X.
- You are comfortable buying digital editions or using digital access offered through your account.
- The 1440p target and available 512GB or 1TB configuration fit your display and storage needs.
If even one important part of your library is physical, Series X avoids the specific incompatibility that would otherwise force a second purchase or a different console.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Buying and setup checklist for a disc owner
- Identify the exact Series X model. Confirm that the listing includes an optical drive. Do not assume every future configuration has identical hardware.
- Inventory your discs. Separate Xbox One and Series X titles from Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles, then mark the older games that appear in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog.
- Check market availability. Microsoft’s listed 1TB, 2TB, 512GB, and 1TB configurations can vary by region and retailer, so verify the capacity and model name at purchase.
- Plan storage. Reserve internal SSD space for installations and updates. Add a compatible Storage Expansion Card if your library will exceed that space.
- Prepare a compatible display. For the advertised 4K or 120-FPS capabilities, the game and display must support the relevant mode; the console’s maximum does not guarantee those results in every title.
- Install one test disc first. Insert a known-supported game, allow the download to complete, launch it with the disc still inserted, and confirm that your network and storage setup are adequate before buying more physical games.
Common mistakes and how to resolve them
“My Series S will not recognize the disc.”
That behavior is expected: Series S has no game-disc reader. No software update, external USB drive, or storage expansion card adds physical-game compatibility. Use a digital license or choose an optical-drive Series X.
“My Series X accepts the disc but says the game is unavailable.”
Check whether the exact title is in Microsoft’s backward-compatibility catalog if it is an Xbox 360 or original Xbox game. For Xbox One and Series X games, verify that the disc is genuine and that the console has enough free storage to install the supported package. A readable disc does not guarantee that the game itself is in the supported catalog.
Recommended Free Tools
“The game installed, but it asks for the disc again.”
That is the normal license check for a disc-based installation. Leave the game disc in the optical drive whenever you launch and play it. Installing the data to an SSD does not convert the copy into a digital license.

“I expected the disc to contain the whole game.”
Series X can download the playable package and updates to the hard drive after the disc is inserted. Ensure the console has network access and sufficient local storage, and allow the installation to finish before troubleshooting the disc.
“A UHD Blu-ray works, so why does my game disc not?”
The optical drive’s UHD Blu-ray capability concerns movie playback. Game compatibility is controlled separately by the supported Xbox title and backward-compatibility catalog.
“The box says up to 120 FPS, but my game runs below that.”
120 FPS is a ceiling offered with supported content and a compatible display. The game may use a lower frame-rate mode, and your display or selected settings may limit the result.

A physical purchase and a digital purchase are different license paths. Series X lets you retain the physical path for supported titles: the installed game remains tied to the disc check. Series S requires the digital path from the outset. If you are deciding between consoles because of a possible future switch, count the games you would need to buy digitally rather than assuming the discs will transfer automatically.
Backward compatibility can also change as Microsoft updates its catalog and licensing arrangements. Treat the catalog entry for a specific title as authoritative at the time you plan to play it, and recheck it when purchasing an older disc.
Bottom line for physical-game players
Series X is the only choice in this comparison that addresses a physical game library. Its optical-drive models accept supported Xbox One and Series X discs and selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox discs, install the game to local storage, and require the disc to stay inserted as the license check. Series S is strictly digital on both its 512GB and 1TB models. Buy it only if you are prepared to obtain your games digitally; buy Series X if the discs you already own, borrow, buy used, or may resell are part of your plan.
